Mohr & McPherson is a direct importer and purveyor of fine furniture, hand knotted carpets, and accessories from around the planet. Our inventory contains the most extensive collection of its kind in New England. History

Established in 1990.

In the early 1990’s I started traveling the world in search of exotic furnishings. I found that the well-​traveled customer base responded to the collection of Indian, Japanese, Chinese, and Moroccan furnishings with real enthusiasm.

Since then the company has grown and branched out, with three locations in Massachusetts. We receive many container shipments a year from all over the world. Our selection is the most varied in all of New England. The fastest growing category, and in many ways the most interesting to me, has been handmade rugs and carpets. They are made in some of the most colorful countries in the world using centuries of tradition.

The experience in having these artworks pass through our showrooms on the way to their final destinations has been most rewarding. I believe that most of the pieces we sell need to be seen and touched. For that reason I hope you can make the time to visit us in person. I look forward to meeting you. –Kevin McPherson

Mohr & McPherson offers in-​home design consultation. Our design professionals have an extensive background in visual merchandising and home décor. Karole’s expertise in spatial planning, color schematics, fabric selection, and furniture layout will help pull your desired look together.

Interior Design Services start at $ 125 for 90 minutes. A visit may include general room design and a drafted floor plan to scale, or may focus on one specific goal. Our design fee is waived if subsequently you spend over $ 2500 at our showrooms.

I’ve bought several big and small-​ticket items here over the years, and I really love the place. If you haven’t stopped by to just walk through and look at the museum-​like collection, you’re really missing out. The large (4’x4’) painting and bed frame I bought several years ago have really stood the test of time and are my two absolutely favorite things I own. Not just «favorite pieces of home décor/​furniture,» but «favorite things,» period.
It’s obvious, looking at some of their sources (both foreign and domestic), that items are marked up about 30%, but they have frequent sales and are willing to haggle in the store, especially if an item’s been around for a while. Frankly, given that I’m not planning to go to Thailand and pick up some local art any time soon, I’m happy to pay a little extra for them to do it for me!
Beautiful collection, I probably wouldn’t want to outfit my entire house with stuff from Mohr & McPherson (unless it’s really your style, it would be a little much), but if you want a statement piece to go with your Ikea furniture, it’s money well spent!
Also, as one of the sales ladies told me, and I confirmed later through online research, it’s a New England tradition to have at least one piece of Oriental furniture in your house. Merchants would frequently bring it over, and it was sort of an «upper-​crusty» thing. You’ll see nods to this all over in fancily-​decorated lobbies, buildings, and homes in Massachusetts. «Rustic New England-​ey, rustic New England-​ey… Chinese vase!»

To quote Unilocal: «Woohoo! As good as it gets!» I went into Mohr & McPherson with absolutely no plans to buy anything but rather to accompany my sister to this establishment. I was amazed to have fallen in love with so many pieces at this store and to find their prices to be fair and reasonable. I felt myself elevated from my Pottery Barn attitudes.
The reason for the 5 stars is actually for customer service. We met John M. and had the best shopping experience ever… and I mean ever. He was attentive and friendly without being at all salesman-​pushy. My sister wanted to look at some different pieces and he accomodated her request by showing up their warehouse. In the meantime it was me who was finding more and more items! John was also helpful in providing advice to the both of us. Further, since I live out of state he went above and beyond finding the best shipping rates for the items I bought.
So unique and fun furniture combined with a fun and helpful John M. meant shopping was a blast, and I will definitely be shopping there again despite living out of state!

Walked in here today after brunch. Everyone always talks about this place and how expensive it is which it is. But but but there are great things there that are on the cheaper side. I bought a rug at the back of the store that was like fifty dollars. Head to the back and check out the rugs. Obviously you have a lot of money to spend the furniture is wonderful but def pricey.

Outstanding Customer Service
We bought leather chairs from the Cambridge Mohr and McPherson store in 2007. Within this past year the leather started to peel off. It was like they were shedding. I contacted Mohr and McPherson and they completely resolved the situation to my satisfaction. I was impressed. Thank you SO much.

I have had a wonderful experience with Mohr & McPherson, both in quality and service.
We ordered a custom canopy bed to be delivered from India. When it arrived, it was beautiful — the turned shesham wood and the headboard carving were all made as we discussed, and I was excited to have the bed of my dreams. However, the dimensions of the platform were off, and I, who am under 5′, would need a running jump to get onto the bed — it was too high!
Kevin McPherson personally spoke with me on the telephone, and came over to my home to understand the situation. He proposed a fix to keep the right height on the canopy, while lowering the platform. Once we agreed on the approach, Kevin had his staff come and take the parts needed for fixing. Kevin also gave me his personal cell phone number and provided weekly updates until the problem was resolved. And Mohr & McPherson absorbed the costs of the fix, which wasn’t very simple.
It’s easy to like a store when all goes well — it’s when something goes badly the true colors show. I will definitely enjoy evolving the deco’r of my home with the help of this business.

There is no doubt that this is a beautiful store full of interesting and lovely pieces for all tastes from India, Japan, China, Thailand, and more.
I would like to comment particularly on the customer service:
I had just moved here from out of town and was really quite a blown away by the quality of the service from Kay, Karole, and Kevin (the owner). The team at Mohr & McPherson provided me with everything I needed in a professional, timely, and frankly warm manner.
They provided in-​home consulting, and helped me to choose pieces, no matter how small the detail. The advise they gave, even if I was apprehensive in the moment, all worked out incredibly well. I found that their suggestions were reasonable and never pushed the limits of what I felt comfortable with, either financially or otherwise. The staff is seasoned in the business and responds quickly to emails and telephone queries. The delivery men they provided for their products were meticulous in my home. On one occasion a product was damaged at the warehouse, and when I noticed, they replaced it with a new one, without a problem, and absorbed the delivery charge for both.
I can’t say enough about my impression of both the products and the team at M & M. I feel proud of my home and get many compliments on their pieces, and it was a real pleasure to work with them. I now understand why they have been such a longstanding Boston/​Cambridge institution, and would highly recommend them.

If anyone besides me is «in the trade,» they’ll know how HUGE the markups are for the stuff Mohr & McPherson sells. Outrageous. But, of course it’s a store for upscale people who can drop thousands of bucks without sweating it. I just get that «holy crap!» effect whenever I look at the price tags since I can get the same stuff from an importer, or in an Indian bazaar, or a shrine sale in Japan, with no middle-​man, for a fraction of what M&M is selling it for.
As for the quality, it’s variable. Caveat emptor when it comes to stuff from Morocco or India, as leather made from camel hide or other non-​steer sources can get brittle quickly.
On the other hand, the hand-​carved wooden doors from Indian estates, some of the better Japanese tansu, some of the textiles and woodcraft are investments in aesthetic cultural artifacts if you can afford them. Not quite museum pieces, but some great examples of handiwork and craftsmanship seldom seen in our mainstream consumer outlets. I can appreciate how much fun it is to walk through the aisles and niches of offerings. It can be overwhelming, but after you have gone a few times WITHOUT buying something, it gets easier to narrow down what you really can use and love.

Wow, what a beautiful and exotic store! This place has unique Asian furniture ranging from rustic tables, colorful rugs, dramatic beds etc. You could spend all day in here. Seriously, you could. they have their own café right in the store.
Yes, I’m sure there’s a high markup, but the furniture is of such high quality that I think its worth it.
Apparently they used to have an outlet in Cambridge. Please bring it back so I can afford more of your furniture!

In this case, Mohr is less.
A really large, packed store, there are some definitely interesting pieces of furniture, but on the whole, it just feels like a really crowded Pier 1 Imports. If you’re looking for anything other than the furniture from the first two seasons of Ab Fab, go somewhere else. But if the African safari/​Japanese Zen Garden/​Indian statue is your thing… *ding ding ding* you’ve hit the jackpot.

HOW ABOUT SOME COURTESY?
Great store with awesome, inspiring stuff. We went in to buy a sofa for my wife’s birthday. While we were looking three different salespeople were our best friends. Helpful, full of information and insight, design knowledge etc. SOLD! A week later we came in to pick up the sofa. Our friendly staff hadn’t done a thing to get the piece ready, though they promised to do so. They were rude about it. Not appreciated when you’re putting down real money for a nice piece of furniture.

A friend of mine told me awhile ago that he had seen something that looked like a café hiding out around the galleries on Harrison Ave. I thought I would investigate. I was very pleased to discover the cute little café that is inside Mohr & McPherson. You would have to really be looking for this place. It’s not very visible from the street, although there is a small, neon café sign in the window. They have an excellent selection of espresso drinks and pastries including chocolate and almond croissants, scones, sweets and some salads. I had an espresso which quite good and an almond croissant. The croissant was tasty, but not especially fresh. I did love, however, their two little outdoor tables. I will definitely be back, at least for the coffee drinks. This is a really welcome addition to the neighborhood and a great place to sit outside for a bit and enjoy the weather.

My wife and I spent several hours in this store one Saturday. The selection of merchandise is excellent – lots to love on the floor – and prices seemed reasonable to me.
I was especially pleased by our reception at Mohr & McPherson given how we were dissed at a neighboring business, Tour de France (not an uncommon experience there, given the other reviews on Unilocal). Mohr &McPherson staff couldn’t have been friendlier or more helpful. The store was very busy, but no one lost track of our questions or didn’t get back to us with information we needed.
I haven’t been to any of their other locations, but this one is pleasant to browse and there’s good parking nearby.

OMG. This place looks like a freakin’ museum. It’s like one of those showrooms you see famous designers going to on HGTV and Discovery daytime and you think to yourself, «that’s one of those home décor secrets I would never be able to find on my own.»
Here you go. It’s gorgeous. They play really ambient music, the lighting is lovely, the merchandise is exotic and beautiful. Yes, it’s pricey. But the stuff you’re getting is also incredible. It’s an investment, a question of personal values. You have to decide if it’s worth it to you — and some people (myself included if I had the money) are willing to set aside some cash for unique imported pieces. They’re also not afraid to have a sale, which I find is too often not the case with similar places in Boston. Besides, even if you don’t want to spend the money, it’s worth it just to go and look and get inspired.
They recently added a small jewelry department, which is growing, and has beautiful artisan designs. I also hear they’ll be opening a café in a few days, which is brilliant because, as I said, it’s like a museum — a cozy museum where you want to sit down and enjoy being surrounded by pretty things and listening to music. Sitting in a store as entertainment? Who knew.
Also, based on a chat I had with one of their salespersons re: importing Buddhas, they appear to follow ethical importing practices which I dig (aka, not encouraging the desecration of Buddhist temples in Asia).
Absolutely worth going out of your way for. You could seriously spend a few hours even if you’re not in the market for anything. And they have a few trinkets and gifts laying around that are very affordable if you’re not in the market for investment furniture or a giant rug.

I nearly ran to Mohr & McPherson when I found out they opened a location in the city.
Wohooooo!
I’ve been procrastinating heading to their other locations because that means I need to fetch my car from its cozy spot in the garage and actually venture outside the city on a lovely weekend day, which is not at all appealing to me these days…
Anyway, a month or so ago I saw they opened a store in the gorgeous Women’s Education and Industrial Union building and raced on over.
I love that they kept the beautiful architecture, though I’m not really surprised, given the nature of the store. It’s chock-​full of imported furniture, accessories, rugs and so many other gorgeous things from India, Tibet, China, etc… There’s also a separate little room filled with beautiful textiles and jewelry, which I’m not sure the other stores carry.
The only downside is price. Having been to some of the countries where the items come from, I know what they really cost. Sure, the prices are going to be marked up, but I’ve found similar items at more affordable prices elsewhere in the city. That’s the reason for the 4 and not 5 stars.
I will definitely check back quite often for new merchandise as well as Mothers Day and birthday gifts.
