Gypsy Bar

Gypsy is a great experience. The atmosphere is awesome. Whiskey saigon is a new name/​bar for them. The drinks are great and it gets me to a nice buzz but there is one thing that needs to be fixed .
—The coat check staffs. They need to be trained to a certain extant to be able to take care of a good/​regular customers (even when they’re drunk). When a customer got her fingers slammed from the door (they slammed her fingers.) They need to be asked «are you okay?» Or apologize sincerely. Its a heartbroken news to know that my friend got slammed from the door by the coat check staffs and they felt nothing but to told her to «get back in line and step aside.» «Wait on the side.» They called for security instead. The security was actually very generous to her. It needs to be posted for everyone to know that whiskey Saigon is nothing different but the name. Gypsy is actually the most enjoyable place. The staffs needs to be fixed or the manager needs to be changed.

Gypsy Bar is the type of place that in the past I’ve had a like/​hate relationship with. I like the set up of the space and DJs are usually pretty decent. What I don’t like are the long lines outside, overpriced drinks, and the ultra-​crowded dance floor.
After stopping by Gypsy this past Labor Day weekend, the scales have definitely tipped more to the «hate» side of things. Though it used to charge a $ 10 cover, this time they were asking for an outrageous $ 20. Really? Not even a 10 or 20 percent increase? They’re going to be ballsy enough to double their price? No thank you. There’s nothing magical about this place, and it’s definitely not the only spot in this neighborhood.

Gypsy is, as people say, a hit or miss.
When you hit it; the music is great and dance-​able, the crowd is nice and not too weird, and the drinks, well it’s the same hit or miss.
When you miss it; the music is kind of bad, the crowd is nonexistent or sketchy, and drinks give you a hangover the next day.
But wait, isn’t that the same for a lot of other clubs in that area? For a $ 10 ($ 15 for the gentleman), instead of $ 25 cover and I get to dance the night away with my friends. I’m a fan.

This is an emotional post for me to write, considering I no longer live in Boston and cannot enjoy the many charms of Gypsy Bar. I went to Emerson College on Boylston St. and would watch hordes of scantily clad ladies and bros storm the streets to stand in the icy line.
How are they not freezing to death? Why are they tan when it’s 15 degrees outside? Why are these people on my hipster campus? Much like Princess Ariel, I wanted to be part of their world.
I dreamt of the day I could stumble through those beautiful doors. I waited and waited for the moment I turned 21 so I could be part of the mystery. The magic.
Once I turned 21 there was no turning back. The pounding music. The drinks I don’t remember ordering nor spilling. My most precious (blurry) memories of Emerson involved Gypsy Bar.
It was a major part of my education. A lesson in clubbing, detecting wasted behavior and research on cattle herding to NYP for pizza after last call. The pounding top 40s, the women I met and took selfies with in the bathroom are all moments I hold dear to my heart.
It’s «da club» and they’re honest about it. Wear nothing– it’s within dress code. Unless you’re a guy. In that case don’t wear sneakers. Come on, show some respect.
There’s a cover and I would pay it ten times over to be there this weekend.

I have been going to Gypsy Bar for parties or random nights out for the past 3 years now. Hands down it is a great place to dance and does have a lot of open space.
For girls– definitely an easy club to get into without having to pay cover. Pretty sure most weekend nights if you get there before 11:30 and you’re a party of only girls you can get buy without cover and even without waiting in line. BUT do beware that there tends to be lots of creepy men once you get inside. However the music is great and there are different areas and bars to dance at.
For guys — may have to pay cover if after 11 but overall is easier to get into compared to many other clubs in Boston. Don’t have to be super dressed to get in but would recommend wearing nice shoes.
Great for parties since contacting a promoter is pretty easy and getting a guest list is simple.

Gypsy Bar… I’m a fan.
I’m even tempted to say that this is the best nightclub in Boston. Actually, I will say it – This is the best club in Boston. It has a great sound system, has great lighting, and the lounges located at the rear (front?) of the club are both a welcome relief (NOT respite) for when you want to hang out and chill for a bit.
While the new club in town, Bijou, is hauling in big-​name DJ’s & producers to play weekly, Gypsy Bar is doing the same. I saw ATB when I was in town during Thanksgiving break, and it was one of the most incredible shows of my life. Something about seeing these legendary producers in an intimate setting make for amazing sets.
I went this past Friday night. Whoever said all that shiz about not being able to get in, even when on the guestlist, you’re doing something wrong. I’ve never had any problems, nor have I ever had to wait in line. As for personnel, Jazz is by far the coolest bartender I have ever met. There was a good 45 minutes combined throughout the night where we were just exchanging drink recipes. For those of you who may not know, but know me personally, I have a thing for mixology and make some pretty wicked drinks. People like that are cool and definitely make me want to come back.

I tend to write a lot in my reviews. I’ll try to keep this one short.
If you want really short: Never go here. All of the nightclubs within a block are better, with the exception of Cure. The only time you should go to Gypsy is if your other alternative is Cure.
To give two prototypical experiences:
Every time I’ve been there, it’s full of big dudes literally PUSHING everyone else on the dancefloor, as hard as they can. Men or women. Doesn’t matter. Security has never stepped in and done anything.
I was there with some too-​drunk friends, trying to help them out to the cab and got at least ten offers from «wallflower» creepers «if she doesn’t wanna go with you, I’ll take her from you.» Sorry, my girlfriends aren’t transferable property. She’s too drunk to know where she is, much less consent to anything.
This club probably gets more crowded than any other club in Boston. I don’t understand how people find being packed into a back room like sardines enjoyable. Where I’m originally from, you go to the club to dance. Which involves having enough room to move and breathe.
If you want to go to a good club in Boston, go to Royale. It has everything you need, want, desire.

I don’t believe the hype so much, as I have come here on a number of separate occasions over the past 2 years. The jellyfish are awesome… what can I say? The music… pretty good. The people… meh. Still, at least it is super convenient to get to and has an adequate space for a dance floor.

This place is terrible. I’ve been dragged here a few times by friends and I always have an awful time.
— if you get separated from your friends, good luck finding them. the layout of this place is horrendous.
— several bars, but not enough bartenders. it takes forever to get a drink.
— music is bad. seriously bad.
— lots of creepers. no one likes that.

Oh Gypsy bar.
I really want to dislike you but most of the time I end up having a decent time. I forget that you can actually get a drink here when you want one and not wait half an hour when the rest of your friends are dancing, that there are places where you can get away from that same sweaty mass of contorting bodies, that there are some people that go here that I think are cool and that are down with people like me.
There are worse more trashy euro bars with pricier drinks that filter out the rest of the people that I don’t want to be around.
I’m left with a place where I can dance when I want, where I can order a couple of drinks from a bartender that’s perfectly nice, and I can be amused by how odd and erratic when people are trying to be classy.
Thank you Gypsy Bar, ps you should get a slightly better DJ.

I’ve been here twice and the first time wasn’t bad. The cover here is steep and I think you can have a much better time with a larger space next door at The Estate. The atmosphere is cool and décor is cool because they have a jellyfish tank behind the bar.
For NYE, I paid $ 40 for a ticket which included a midnight champagne toast. First off, there are not enough bathrooms to accommodate this place and they are oddly placed so people who are in the coat check line get confused. Bar service was ok, I understand it was not going to be great as who wants to work on NYE? They decorated the place well for NYE and overall it was just OK. It got way too crowded too fast and I was not impressed with the DJ, who pretty much just play mash-​ups of ??? for 4 hours.
On a non-​NYE night this place isn’t bad. I still think the cover is expensive, so I usually wouldn’t go here, but if you’re looking for a change the décor is nice and if you have money to spend why not. If you’re looking for something cheaper go to the Liquor Store nearby.

I’m not going to sugar-​coat this, I was excited to go to Gypsy on my first trip to Boston. I went with a mixed group (Males & Female, Asians, Caucasians, and South Asians) of about 15 people and we all ended up storming out before we even got in.
Five friends and I had put ourselves on a Ladies VIP list to get into the club free if we arrived before 11. We arrived at 10:30, spoke to the bouncer who initially told us we could go, but then said to wait in line and that he would get us. 10:55 rolled around and we went back to speak to him as we wanted the make the deadline. The bouncer denied ever speaking to us, let alone saying that he would get us, and told us to get back in line.
After arguing with the liar for a few minutes, we re-​joined our group at their new location towards the front (listening to rude comments from the employees along the way) and then the bouncer went off.
He started yelling and swearing at us saying we «cut the line» and when we explained that we came with this group he started threatening us and screamed «Don’t f*cking lie to me. You don’t f*cking know them! Get to the back of the line!» — Ridiculously out of line.
The Gypsy Bar bouncers are rude, ignorant, egotistical idiots who did this to a group of 10+ young, let alone attractive female grad students, totally unprovoked.
The only thing Gypsy Bar offers over other clubs in Boston is cheap cover ($ 10), but I’d rather pay 3x than interact with their d-​list employees.

While dives and draughts are more my scene, I’m not one to shun the chance to cut shapes in a crowd of sharp collars grinding to points as RiRi chants «cake cake cake cake cake.» I mean, it is Tuesday.
And I’m a sucker for seafaring background dancers. Where’s the peanut butter? Cuz you’s covered in jelly.
But for all the positive tanked jellyfish, loungey atmosphere that escapes pearlescent Vegas chintz and booming uhn-​tiss-​uhn-​tiss-​uhn-​tiss, Gypsy has an absolutely abysmal bar.
$ 9.50 for a lightly-​poured, well vodka soda in (WHAT?) a plastic cup is just inexcusable. Not disposable, mind you. It’s one of those cloudy clear, reusable cafeteria jobbies that just reeks of Opposite Day in da clurb. What if L’Espalier decided to send out an amuse-​bouche of Sunmaid raisins in the box, or if the Mandarin Hotel put J&J Baby Shampoo in their showers? Offer glassware — your excessive price point warrants, no, demands it. If you don’t trust your patrons, attract new patrons.
Or if you’re alluding to the fact that I shouldn’t trust your patrons, mission accomplished. Next.

Expensive barely-​alcoholic drinks? Check.
Extremely tiny dance floor? Check.
Purse and coat check everyday of the week? lolcheck
Good music? Starts within the last hour.
Friendly staff? Nope, they even want to push you out before you close your tab.

When I first moved to Boston I remember hearing about Gypsy and how it’s apparently the place to be. It took a few years for me to try it and when I did I left with one thought: WTF
I guess the main issue is that they let everyone in. Seriously. Unless you look like a bum they don’t care. This means tons of ugly, creepy people and underage college students. The first time I came here I think I my friend and I were the oldest ones there (23 + 24). That’s really sad. I saw two couples fight, and I’m positive one of the girls was 19.
So since there are mostly younger people here that leads me to my other issue. Everyone is shitfaced. I mean girls throwing up, flashing people, people spilling drinks and bros getting into arguments. I’m not saying I don’t drink when I go out because believe me I definitely do, but this has crossed the line from tipsy, to sloppy trashy.
On the bright side I do have to say that the place is very pretty. I really liked the front bar area. And it’s great for people watching.
I also suffered a second time thinking maybe that was an off night… It wasn’t. I lasted only 30 minutes before I peaced and went to Rumor (my go to spot)
So I’m left dazed and confused wondering where is this mythical place called Gypsy bar that people say is so awesome? Sadly it’s a rumor spread most likely by the owners.

I went to Gypsy on a Saturday night with several friends after another bar we had wanted to go to had issues with my 23-​year-​old friend’s ID. We were pretty frustrated at that point and settled for the first place we saw.
Okay, $ 10 cover isn’t TOO bad I guess but I really wonder what I was paying for… this place has potential but none of it is fulfilled. I paid WAY too much for a weak vodka tonic, but at least the bartender was nice. The music was okay, we really wanted to dance so we were fine with whatever strange mixes the DJ decided to play…
What we were not fine with were the strange and creepy creatures that would come up to us and start dancing with/​rubbing against us without even LOOKING at us! I had a guy approach me from behind and start rubbing me! CREEPY!
I would not come here again. I would rather go to a bar that doesn’t charge a cover and has weird music than go back to Gypsy, pay a ridiculous amount of money for a drink, and get violated by middle aged men.

I really hate this place. the music is good, at least, but it is not good enough to make up for the seedy guys who come here. Every time I have come with a large group of girl friends, we are constantly surrounded by these creeps who start trying to grind on us without even saying hello.
Also the drinks are too expensive, and on top of the $ 10 cover it’s just not worth it.

I would like to begin by extending a sincere apology to Gypsy Bar on behalf of my 84 classmates and myself, all of whom attended a party in the VIP section last Friday night. I apologize because all 85 of us did not bring enough business, pay enough covers, or purchase enough drinks. Maybe if we had, they would not have felt the need to STEAL from at least two of my classmates and myself.
My story: I purchased two vodka drinks and paid with my credit card. Unfortunately, in my hurry to avoid the 1:30 AM taxi rush, I left around 1 AM and forgot to retrieve my card. (This is, of course, my fault alone). The bar made retrieving my card so difficult that I still haven’t been able to get it back.
My credit card statement had a charged of $ 29 on it, which I found strange — What bar charges $ 14.50 per drink? I called Gypsy and was told that vodka drinks were $ 10 each. When I asked about the extra $ 9 (50% is a very large tip!), I was told, rudely, that to contest a charge, I need to send them a credit card statement. I posted a warning on facebook to caution my classmates, and two of them told me the same thing happened to them. One was charged $ 50 extra, another was charged $ 20 extra.
It truly saddens me to write this review because I have patronized Gypsy many times and have had fun every time I went, even last Friday.
Am I saying you should never visit Gypsy? No.
Am I saying you should proceed at your own risk? Perhaps.
Am I saying you should check all your credit card statements carefully? Yes.
Am I saying you should avoid working with/​dealing with the rudeness and ignorance that characterizes their staff? Absolutely.

I don’t really like the music that plays here. But I like the venue itself… it’s large, nice, and the fish tank is amazing.
When I came, it was for a birthday… so I didn’t mind paying. But if it were any regular occasion, I don’t think it would be worth it to pay cover. I mean… it was fun only because my friends were all here… it’s not a club/​bar I would go to if it were just me and a couple other ladies.

One of my favorite clubs in Boston now!
Came out one night with a huge Tufts crew (we had over 50 people) and got in for free. I really like that this place isn’t as trashy or run down as many other clubs in Boston.
When you first step inside, there’s a really long walkway/​bar/​lounge area with plenty of seating. It was perfect for hanging out and catching up with friends because there wasn’t BLARING music, just background music so it wasn’t awkward. Still night-​clubby.
Keep making your way in and there are multiple rooms/​areas for dancing. That night, I can’t say I loved the music selection but there were a couple good streaks (i like my Top 20’s, Hip hop, R&B, Reggaeton). The place was PACKED on a Friday night and the clientele seemed like a really decent, good looking crowd. (of course, i’m biased since most of the people there i «saw» were friends) :P
I’d definitely be back again! :)
