History

Established in 2009.

Julie Helton established Xcel Performance in July, 2009 beginning on the South side of Bloomington. In 2012, Jeremy Helton joined the business as a fitness instructor. The first private studio was opened on Kirkwood Ave in 2013, and the studio was moved to College Ave downtown in 2015.

Prior to founding Xcel Performance, Julie Helton worked for Indiana University as an assistant strength and conditioning coach. In addition to designing and implementing strength, agility, conditioning, and flexibility workouts for many collegiate teams, Helton managed the strength and conditioning internship program and advocated in favor of nutrition education for the athletic department.

Before arriving in Bloomington Julie worked as a graduate assistant strength coach at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis. She assisted with design and implementation of workouts for all sports, and managed the collegiate internship program

The Memphis, Tenn., native earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise science at Asbury College. She was a member of the women’s basketball team and served as a student assistant strength coach for the Asbury men’s basketball. As an undergraduate student, Julie interned with the TN Lady Vols program.
