Big Bear Mountain Golf Course

We had reservations on a holiday weekend with 7 golfers. We had a great time. The customer service was awesome. Every employee treated us like gold. We golfed Memorial Weekend 2016. The golf course fairways are nice and fast however the rough is like a wild safari in Africa. We love the golf course. Whomever hired and trained the employees is a great manager. Thank you for making our holiday in Big Bear a success. We will be back.

I have played golf since I was about 14 years old and was actually on my high school’s junior varsity golf team. That being said, I have played at many courses in the last 12 years and I found Big Bear Mountain Golf Course to be really great, but you have got to keep reading to find the reasons why. Disclaimer: This is by no means a course for ‘pros’ attempting to challenge themselves.
This is a 9-​hole course so it’s absolutely perfect for a fun activity during your weekend getaway to the mountains. There is only one par 5 hole, a few par 4 holes and three par 3 holes. The last par 3 hole has a large pond between the tee box and the green. Try as I might, both of my attempted hits just missed the green and the balls drowned. My boyfriend made an awesome play though and hit the roof of the condos behind the green during his tee off and the ball bounced back to the green and landed directly next to the hole!
The fairway’s looked pretty well kept with plenty of grass and trimmed trees. There were some maintenance guys going around filling divots and the golf carts were very clean. The grass did have a tint of brown in some spots, but it’s already getting cold in Big Bear so I’m sure the grass has been struggling to stay alive with the chilly nights. The fall season did bring with it some gorgeous colors though and the views are absolutely stunning from the course.
The people working the clubhouse were very friendly and even allowed the fourth person in our party who was not playing to ride along for free despite their $ 9 ‘rider fee’.
My only complaint is the buildup of players on Hole 1. We had to sign up for a tee time so I was under the impression that we would have a bit of space between players. It’s a bit nerve racking when you have 7 golf carts of people watching you tee off on your very first hole.

I admit that I’ve never been to an actual golf course before. I’ve been mini golfing, I’ve even been to a putting course and a driving range but never a full golf course. Although I don’t have anything to compare this course with, I was pleased with it.
My boyfriend and our two friends decided to go golfing during our weekend stay in Big Bear. Since we’ve already established I have no golfing experience, I decided to leave the golfing to the «pros» and I’d simply go along for the ride while sipping a glass of wine. Since the course is only nine holes, it was perfect for a first-​time experience. From a non-​golfers perspective, the holes seemed varied. Some were short, some were longer, some were uphill and one even included a large body of water to attempt to hit your ball over. Sadly, several golf balls met their demise on that hole.
Since we were there in the off-​season, some of the amenities, like the clubhouse restaurant were closed for the season. But the pro shop had a couple of coolers with a selection of beer and wine so we were able to get a few drinks for the course.
Golfing in mid-​October also means cooler temperatures and it was in the mid-​50s. I got a little chilly watching everyone play but I think being active and actually golfing made it easier to deal with. A benefit to golfing in the fall though is seeing all the gorgeous autumn leaves surrounding the course.
I think it cost about $ 40 (including tax) a person to golf nine holes and I guess they usually charge a small fee to ride along but they waived it for me (possibly due to the slow day?).
All in all, it was nice way to spend a couple of hours and a good first-​time golfing experience for me.

Great Executive Course with greens to rival my local Country Club. Friendly staff and reasonable prices. Ask about the lunch rates that include food, golf and speedy cart.
Club House was well stocked with Stella Artois and «in the know» staff.
Forget to bring your clubs? Not a problem as they rent out bags with clubs. Pro Shop sported Course Polo Shirts and enough swag to outfit a Pro like Bubba Watson. Was he playing that day? Uh I promised to keep a secret and though Bubba does have his «Green Jacket» hanging at Augusta, but plays all over the United States I heard.
Bear Mountain Golf Course is on my top 10 list of Golf courses at elevation! Small enough to walk, yet my pockets were not capricious enough to adequately accomodate my 275 yard shot fuel, Meh Fail! So I rolled on with a cart, white balls, local swag and liquid fuel — no regrets. Do play this course, was an awesome experience and a challenge.

Wonderful course! I was having a little vacation up here and wanted to get a round in. I’m so used to playing courses in the SF Valley so this nice little mountain course was a great change of pace. Unfortunately, my round got cut short due to lighting and rain in the area and they had to close the course down for the day, however, I got a «rain check» and can come back anytime and play a full round. Greg was running the place that day and he knows what he’s doing. Great customer service. Definitely going to be back, with or without my free round!

I wouldn’t go back here if I lived down the street. Course is ok, a lot of narrow fairways but not terrible. The staff was lazy, rude, and could care less. They quoted $ 30 with cart over the phone when the tee time was booked, and of course it was $ 46 by the time we got there. We mentioned the quoted price, they didn’t care at all. Then there was this ridiculous overkill check in process that included giving up a bunch of your info on a computer terminal and agreeing to all kinds of things. When we actually read them, and they didn’t apply at all but the program wouldn’t proceed unless we signed it we asked the staff, and the morons just told us to sign it anyways, even though it was a false statement now with our signature on it. He just said, it doesn’t matter just sign it. Great business practice. Then they told us we would be booted without warning if we… gasp… brought any beer to a golf course. Then the marshal was all over us the whole round. Not to mention to hit balls on the range you have to run across a fairway between other golfers tee shots. Seriously. Someone please put up a decent course in the mountains. You would steal all business instantly.

Man if anyone can open up a «real» golf course up here, they’d be rich. This one is good for families, beginners, or if you are playing with the spouse. Definitely a ski resort style course. Lots of undulation and elevation change. Pretty open course overall. The fairways were very long. Greens were not special. Took almost 3 hours to play 9 on a Saturday. Just not worth a return trip for me. But check it out if you’re at the lake and get the golf itch

What a great place to play 9 holes. The staff at the pro shop are really nice (Bjorn and Leonie). Greg, the course Marshall, is friendly, helpful and patient. The greens are a good challenge with plenty of breaks and runs. I lost two balls in the water at hole 8 and it’s one of my favorite holes after hole 4 which has a beautiful panoramic view. It’s always a highlight of my trip!

Great prices, very helpful and friendly staff (Greg), well kept greens and driving range. Will definitely come back!

Unprofessional staff.
Dry erase boards are used as communication of hours of operation and can’t really be seen from the street unless you pull up.
So we had both our families come to hit some balls at the range at 6:15pm and it turns out the dry erase board said they close at 6pm. We were walking up to just take a look at the area to see if this place was worth coming back for the next day. As we were walking through the grass we were greeted by what looked like someone playing through so we waited. We hear him shouting that it’s closed as he’s playing the hole. Then after he hit we proceeded to walk when he drove up to us again and told us to leave. That’s when we saw his staff shirt and thought if this is closed then why is he playing? Don’t worry… he went back to continue playing on the closed course with this attitude of the rules do not apply to me.
Cheap rates… and you can definitely tell. You really get what you pay for. It wasn’t worth coming back.

Great 9 hole course. Only flatlanders with a ‘tude complain — its all about them.
Course is well kept — especially considering the time it takes to get ready for golf after a long winter. Greens smallish. Fairways very nice. Some elevation on a few holes.
One hole played over water. One teebox on someone’s cabin front yard. Interesting & very unique. Ball washers all in place & work. Teeboxes in good shape.
Newer golf carts. Pace of play is a mite slow but everyone lets fast players play thru.
19^th hole has food & beer & a great patio to view the 9^th hole or the ski slopes.
My only complaint is the practice range … mats. Yuk.

We love playing this little course, the staff is great, we have no problem getting tee times, and it’s just a great way to spend time with friends
My only criticism is that you can’t get anything to eat or drink on the course till about 11:30!!! Totally sucks when you have 8:00 tee times and NOTHING! There have so many times 16 of us go out to play and you would think they would have the cart «person» start when the golfers start! Don’t they want to make some money during the summer… and their sandwiches are good too, but never got one this whole summer!

My wife and I have played Bear Mountain several times. We like the course, it’s fairly priced, challenging, not overly long, and fun. My complaint this time is that the course needs to adhere to its rules, and should be marshaled, even at twilight time. On this occasion we happen to be behind three of the worst golfers to have ever attempted the game. First was a man and his teenage daughter. Both did not meet the course advertised policy of proper golf attire, also, the course rules say each player must have their own set of clubs, which they did not. They probably each took a ten on each hole, with numerous lost balls, I was hoping they would run out and have to quit, but it it seems that each foray into the rough produced more ammunition. I was hoping that he would’ve hit one into the Big Bear Zoo that is closed to the course. The «Golden Bear» he’d meet there would not have been Jack Nicklaus!
The other «golfer/​hacker» was right out of the «Happy Gilmore» cast. Had a swing like Guy La Fleur and hit it all over the lot. To his credit, however, he ran after his ball/​s after every swing while his friend followed in the golf cart. Thank god he was in shape, remember this course is at 7,000 plus feet. His score 180 over 90, pulse 120.
Needless to say a nine hole round of golf turned into «The Bataan Death March»

Been golfing at this course for years. Such a fun, beautiful course. You can easily walk this course, but let’s face it, riding always makes the game so much easier. The greens are beautiful at this time of year. I play at a lot of different courses, and there are usually a lot of rough dry spots. Not the case here. I was also very pleased about their lunch special. $ 35 for a 9 hole round, cart, and lunch. Can’t beat that. If you are looking for a nice relaxing round of golf, check out this course. I highly recommend it.

Terrible place. Not only is it only a nine hole course but the service is very bad. We made a tee time reservation for 18 and when we showed up they said it was only for 9 and wouldn’t allow us to play 18 «not today» the kid in the pro shop says. and the price of 9 is the same price of 18 in most places and they didn’t want to make up for there mistake at all with any kind of discount or apologies. I recommend you just drive down the hill and play a better course.

good little course for the money. Fast greens and narrow fairways so it is challenging.

First point is that the course is only 9 holes. If you want to play 18, just pay for two rounds. To make the second 9 a bit different, play each hole from a different tee. If you plan in advance, you play a few shots from different tees the first nine. Do not think that because it is only 9 holes it is short. You will need every club in your bag!
The course is about as well cared for as you could expect from a public course that was under snow from Nov. through March maybe even April. I think they spend extra time making sure the greens are in good shape for your round. Are they perfect? No, but better than many, if not most public courses.
Due to the high altitude and less dense air, you will gain at least one club length on your shots. I love the fact that I get about 25 yards more on my drives!
The beautiful mountain terrain make the backdrop to this course stunning. Clear air, pine trees and the mountains on either side of the valley make for one of the more picturesque course in southern California.
The pro shop is fairly well stocked but somewhat on the expensive side. I suggest you have a supply of balls when you arrive rather than plan on buying them. I believe that they require a shirt with a collar, no T-​shirts on the course. You can buy shirts in the shop, but be prepared to start in the range of $ 60 for a shirt.
Carts are available or you can walk this course. Depending on the schedule I have, I will walk if time will permit, just to enjoy the area.

Nice course for a quick nine holes (I’d usually rather just play nine), but the price is a bit much. I guess they can get away with whatever they like since there is nowhere else to play up here, and your only other options are 45 minutes or more away.

I played nine holes (there are only nine holes!) at the BBMGC this weekend and had a great time.
The surroundings are unique and beautiful. Each hole is picturesque. The greens are meticulously maintained and are in great shape. The course is challenging and uniquely designed to incorporate the terrain. One hole teed off on an elevated location for a total distance of 500 yards. Several of the holes are long, while several are short. The woman’s tee on one hole actually tees off a small island in the middle of what seemed to be a spring fed (or otherwise ridiculously clear) lake.
As for downsides, the marshal said several things to us about playing too slowly (meanwhile, we had a group ahead of us and were really pacing perfectly.) There are houses on the sides of lots of holes — if you have a wicked slice, you may want to be careful.
Green fees on the weekend were $ 30, cart was $ 8/​pp, club rental was $ 20/​pp… a tad expensive for nine holes.
