Established in 1954.

Aykroyd Hardware was founded by Arthur & Edith Aykroyd in 1954 as a retail hardware store serving the Lehigh Valley. In 1985 his grandson Peter Mickolay assumed ownership and with his father Robert moved the store to its current location and expanded the products and services offered to our customers.

We offer products for both the homeowner and contractor including wholesale pricing on Milwaukee Electric Tools which allows us to service customers nationwide. The company is a family owned business. Peter Mickolay serves as President.

Ruth Mickolay serves as Chief Financial Officer. Mike Kolinsky serves as Store Operations Manager. Today, as in 1954, we offer personal service and the knowledge to help our customers complete a project in a timely and cost effective manner. That’s why we are «The Personal Service Store».

I’ve driven by this place a number of times, and finally stopped in during lunch to check it out. Great service. There were several guys who were not pushy, but happy to help me find what I was looking for … or, by the third guy, he was happy to simply chat.
This place feels as though it is a local institution. The guys probably know their stuff. For a small space, it has a surprisingly broad, and perhaps eclectic array of inventory. Pricing didn’t seem to be too bad, either.

You would think a smaller size family owned hardware store wouldn’t have much of a selection but they really pack a little bit of everything into such a small space. The staff is very knowledgeable and always very willing to help or make good, well informed suggestions. Its not even much more expensive than going to Lowes or Home Depot and I definitely find the ability to get in and out faster to be worth a couple of extra nickels.

We were in Bethlehem today for Musikfest when my 2 year olds stroller broke. Someone in town directed us there so we could get a new bolt. The employees could not have done more to help us including actually getting on the floor and helping my husband fix it right there in the store! They certainly saved the day :) The only problem I have is that I don’t have a hardware store near where I live that has such caring and helpful employees!

Even though I haven’t lived in Bethlehem in years, I still find myself calling Akroyd Hardware anytime I have a DIY or home maintenance question. Everyone who works there is extremely knowledgable and helpful. I have not found another better hardware or home improvement store anywhere.
If you live in the Lehigh Valley, I would highly recommend you go there for all your HI needs.

the guy in here helped out, big time, tho i agree with previous reviewer about the jump-​on browsers. downside is that they have normal business hours, no mid-​night shopping and has tricky street parking.

The place is great, no question. Friendly, knowledgeable and they carry a great array of miscellaneous items. However, unlike the previous comment by Glenn T., they ARE NOT priced better than «big store chains» (i.e. Lowe’s, Home Depot, etc.).
I believe one of the reasons they manage to stay afloat is as a result of their retuning customers; that is, those customers that have built a historical rapport with them. I hope they can continue to stick around, but the fact is: People want to pay less (that’s the bottom line), and they’d be willing to deal with non-​friendly, non-​knowledgeable sales staff so long as they can keep more money in their wallet. This economy needs to get more for less. More for less is not a theme at Akroyds.

Aykroyd’s is surviving amidst the «big store chain» hardware stores and with Lowe’s a few blocks away. They seem to have just about everything and their prices are pretty good. I usually go there for keys, paint and locks and miscellaneous gadgets. The staff is always friendly and very knowledgeable. The one thing I don’t like about Aykroyd’s is the fact that they jump on you the second you walk in the door and they don’t let you ever browse. I think I am like most consumers in that when I browse, I buy. Aykroyd’s friendly staff will get you what you need then hurry you out the door. That is my only caveat against them. Other than that it is a great place.
