Three Stone Hearth

My wife and I LOVE this place. The food is of the highest quality, all the packaging is reusable/​recyclable, and the business is cooperatively owned and managed. It’s one of our favorite businesses EVER!

I’ve been with TSH ever since the early days when they started. Well over 5 years now. Maybe closer to 10.
I’ve never found any place I can trust so much to offer food with full integrity. It’s a life-​saver to be able to have prepared meals that are also deeply nourishing and made with only the best ingredients.
I am so grateful for the hard work and dedication of the TSH team.

This week’s email from Three Stone Hearth is ironic since I just finished conversing via email with one of the founders about how a). they don’t always label their food for those of us with food sensitivities (it would be too onerous online so the concept of ordering with confidence is out the window), and b). pepper is a necessary ingredient in most of their food despite being a condiment, and 3). a nightshade and therefore one of the most reactive foods out there for folks with food sensitivities. This week’s email subject line is «Connection and Community.»
Nightshades are one of the most prevalent food sensitivities, possibly, because, like non food soy, it is now found in almost all processed food so it’s incredibly hard to get away from. Now that we no longer make our own food, it’s incredibly important that we are allowed to at least spice our own food with the basics just like we used to. Remember the salt and pepper shaker that used to grace our tables? There was a really good reason for that.
At least she told me up front that she’s had this conversation before so I know it’s not about me. It’s just policy. Apparently it’s their policy that if something like pepper was written on a piece of paper by whomever, literally, the recipe cannot be updated to reflect today’s circs. That there seems to be an outbreak of auto-​immune diseases and out-​of-​control food sensitivities (often undiagnosed) seems to be of little interest to Three Stone Hearth which says it takes «digestibility» seriously. It’s almost a given that our national outbreak of bad digestion (once you are aware of it) is a byproduct of one size fits all food production. So why insist on including a condiment that is so easily added, or not, by the individual instead and to their exact taste too!?! After all, that’s how it used to be done, dare I say traditionally, at the fancier restaurants where the maître de would bring around a really big grinder and grind away to your exact preference. Hmm, that reminds me, every old recipe I’ve ever read also had salt listed as an ingredient but I don’t see that included in the prepared food that Three Stone Hearth lovingly makes according to tradition. Are they privileging high blood pressure and heart disease over food sensitivities and auto immunity? Wonder why.
I don’t understand why Three Stone Hearth lists «digestibility» as a goal in their mission statement and then doesn’t label the food they produce with anything that’s meaningful to the specific type of consumer they are targeting. The answer they provide just doesn’t make any sense to me.
On the other hand, Three Stone Hearth does have an awesome CSA for vegetables and meat and raw A2 milk. I don’t think you can find real, raw, A2 milk anywhere else. I react to it and I have no idea why (for what that’s worth. Yes, I am allergic to food. It’s completely annoying to me, too) but I gave some to a friend who normally drinks Lactaid and she’s signed up.
They have soy-​free eggs, too. Yellow yolks though so those chickens haven’t been eating a lot of greens and they are refrigerated so you may not be getting the incredible hormonal benefits of unwashed eggs. Three Stone Hearth may be getting truly pastured eggs soon, though since I put them in touch with a far more local (biodynamic!) farm who’s chickens roam green pastures all day long.
They also have a good bookshelf. And this same founder will tell you that the book about the gut and psychological diseases is incredibly important to her. It’s even a personal issue.
I just wish she understood it.

We’ve had a half dozen orders from here: all good. Now keep in mind this place is serious «crunchy granola», and not cheap. Pickup is easy and fun.

TSH has changed my life. Really. I have a 4 year old and a 4 month old, and it has been AMAZING to have nutrient-​dense, fermented, local, organic, humanely raised meals prepared for me so I can spend more time with my kids and less time cooking. My 4 year old loves everything that we have brought home (as do I and my husband). I am lucky to live a few blocks away, so I just pick up a week’s worth of food every Thursday. I avoided ordering from TSH for a several years because it seemed so expensive, but one jar will feed my whole family for dinner if I add some veggies and rice to it, so it ends up costing us about $ 5 a person. Certainly less than Spoon Rocket, Munchery or other take out — and so much healthier.

I’ve gotten a few things here that were tasty (which is why they get more than one star), but my main interest is in the fermented foods and their sauerkraut is way oversalted. Also, I don’t mind paying this much to buy food that’s made by people who are paid a living wage… but volunteers? People work here for free and they still charge $ 15 for a quart of split pea soup. I quit going when I found out about that. I’ll start up again when they start paying the people who do the work for them.

After having my son I no longer have the time to make fermented and cultured foods. Lucky for me Three Stone Hearth offers a decent variety of fermented and cultured food and beverages to purchase. Plus the kitchen is just a few blocks from my house which makes it easy for me to pick up my weekly supply of Kombucha, kefir, sauerkraut, and kvass.
I can’t speak to the quality of their food because I do not eat meat or dairy and they adhere primarily to the GAPS diet and Weston A. Price food prep style. However their food offerings are diverse and balanced for those interested in these style foods.
I find the kitchen to be a welcoming communal space. Costumers and staff are warm and friendly. Definitely worth a visit to enjoy the nourishing foods and vibes.

Three Stone Hearth (TSH) uses traditional methods to make wonderful nutrient-​dense prepared foods. Most of their recipes conform with Weston A. Price and Nourishing Tradition’s guidelines, and many are also GAPS and Paleo compliant, with many gluten-​free offerings.
Some favorites include their delicious bone broths (especially chicken), casseroles, and soups and stews. They also make great cultured/​fermented foods, including kvass, kombucha, pickled vegetables/​krauts, and condiments.
TSH also contracts with small farms and food vendors from Northern California, offering raw milks, organic pastured
​eggs, cheeses, meat, bread, lard, honey, and more, including beauty products.
For a fee, TSH does weekly deliveries to homes in SF, the East Bay, and Marin. Just a warning, deliveries vary greatly in their arrival time from week to week. Fluctuations are caused by kitchen delays, number of customers ordering, traffic, etc. We had a delivery window of between 2 and 7pm, and it would usually be between 4 and 6 when our food arrived. Everything is packed with ice packs to keep perishables cold. Our delivery person was Miles, who we eventually gave a gate code for deliveries. He also picks up the last week’s jars for sterilization/​reuse.
I hope to take a class in their kitchen one day. I love TSH!

We’ve been buying foods from them since they were at their old location. Wow, it’s been like 6 years!!! Time flies when you’re having good foods. Trust us, people, this is the best place to get prepared foods EVER EVER EVER!!! The foods are organic and delicious. The ladies who run the place are super friendly. We love you Three Stone Hearth. I’ve been a TSH customer for 4 years. Although I am not always super happy with the taste of their food, I keep going back because it’s healthy and there is no other such alternative in the area that I know of. I feel like I am feeding my family top quality nutritious food and it really matters to me.
Some of their food tastes and smells way too much like bone broth, such as the cauliflower soup which I recently got. Cooking instructions are off, it takes much longer to cook their food than they claim (e.g. frozen meatloaf). Customer service sucks. I once bought baby food that expired the day after my purchase and when I complained, I never heard back. Three times. No response. Pretty inconvenient pick up times. Location works if you live in the area. Parking always available.

Healthy, nutrient rich foods that generally follow Weston Price Foundation principles. I only wish there was more variety offered on the menu each week. Some of the things are too cheesy for my taste. My favorites are the stews, bone marrow broths, pâté and beet kvass. Food pick up time is very limited and parking can be a nightmare on Wednesday nights between 5−7pm pick up window.

How did I manage to live and eat before finding Three Stone Hearth? I have been ordering food weekly now for almost 6 months. With the help of the tasty, healthful foods I pick up here every week I have just about reached my goal of no supermarket, processed factory fake foods!
I especially recommend their broths, granola, krauts, kambuchas, and their tasty chicken-​vegetable soups. all ingredients are local and seasonal.
They also offer eggs, dairy products and other kitchen items that they have sourced from the best producers. Saves me a lot of time and our meals are healthier and more delicious than ever.
Heartily recommend to anyone interested in healthy eating and saving time in the kitchen.

I love TSH! All of the dishes we have tried have been wonderful. They deliver, the food comes in waste-​free glass jars, it is super nutritious and they sneak in bone broth and organ meat so you don’t have to deal with preparing it yourself. The fermented coolers (naturally fizzy slightly sweet drinks that are lacto-​fermented and so not sour like kombucha) are so refreshing.

This is my little secret! I am so glad I found TSH. I am blessed to be able to get a few staple items I need when school/​work/​commute keep me from my kitchen. I feel good knowing that everything I eat here is healthy and made with honesty and care. It is pricey (I understand why). The only thing I would change is the hours and days to come by to pick things up or a cluster drop off in Alameda.

First, it’s important to understand that this business has a philosophy of providing nutrient-​dense foods made with pasture-​raised meats, organic local produce, and properly prepared foods by soaking and sprouting grains, beans, and nuts. Many of the meals are gluten-​free.
This is also my dietary philosophy which requires a lot of time to prepare and procure these high quality foods. Since I have been busy lately, I decided to supplement my life with some prepared foods by Three Stone Hearth. It’s awesome! They deliver the meals to me in San Francisco. Most of the soups and stews I eat with a salad or vegetables that I cook at home to make a more well-​rounded meal in how I like to eat.
I trust the food, the ingredients, and the business. I love supporting a worker-​owned co-​op that also supports small farms and local foods.
The food is delicious. I like that it is flavorful without being overly salted or spicy. It is made well and it tastes really good. It’s great if you have dietary restrictions like dairy-​free or gluten-​free since there are good options for meals made without these common allergens.

A God Send for busy families wanting healthy, nutrient-​dense meals.
I am the proud mother of a 2.5 year old and a 6 month old. While I used to enjoy collecting recipes, leisurely strolling through the farmers market for inspiration, and spending hours in the kitchen, now I just don’t have the time. With TSH, I can get several amazing dinners for my family AND fresh and healthy baby food for my tiny girl. (Big Dipper Rocks!) It’s awesome that they deliver to Marin! And now at most dinner times, I can spend a fraction of the time at the stove and the rest of my time enjoying my kids and dinner guests.
I know a lot of parents who depend on tv to get them through dinner prep. I just need Three Stone Hearth!

I am in total support of a community kitchen such as Three Stone Hearth that uses locally grown, unprocessed, organic ingredients, prepared with love by mostly volunteers to support the nutritional needs of the nearby communities. For people who are too busy with other priorites in life but do not want to deprive themselves of nurishing and delicious foods at the same time, or for those who have health issues and are on restricted diets, TSH is definitely good news.
Their meat are organic, grass-​fed and eggs/​poultry from free-​ranged chickens. They always have a good selection of dishes on their menu and the menu changes weekly. I’ve ordered their beef bone stock and a few other items when I was not able to spend much time cooking nurishing meals. Each item comes in various sized-​mason jars and I would put some in the freezer and they lasted for a few weeks. I also got the raw cheese and gluten-​free bread. The bread was a little too coarse and hard though, almost like a piece of rock.
They closed down their delivery spots on this side of the bay south of SF though, so there is no drop-​off for me to pick up anymore since I live in San Mateo. I just wish I could get their stuff around here. Working 9 – 5 on the mid peninsula, I cannot get to either SF or Berkeley easily during the week, especially given the traffic after 5 pm. That’s the main reason I have not ordered anything since a year ago.
I am going to volunteer cooking at the kitchen on a Sunday one of these days.

Started going here a couple months ago. Good decision.
I go every other week as yes, it is expensive. But for the quality nutritional meals one gets, you’d do well to make room in your 2010 tiny-​ass budget. The reviews on here will give you plenty of reasons why supporting organic community kitchens are in your best interest.
So, here’s what I do:
Get the the fresh stews or soups or rice dishes or whatever the specials are for the week. They usually cost $ 16 for a quart. When you get home, bake your own potato/​steam your own veggies and you get a great meal for 2 – 4 peeps at about only $ 20. Totally doable. Well worth it compared to going out and dropping twice as much for far, far, less in nutrition.
Their menus always have lots of choice. Their Beet Kvass is superb.

I haven’t had Three Stone Hearth’s food yet, but I would just like to say that 1, the menu looks amazing and I wish I still lived in the Bay. 2, I arranged to give a credit to my friend’s account for her birthday and she has since raved about their food!
I got an extremely quick and helpful e-​mail regarding the process and I am very happy with my choice of presents. I might just have to move back home just to try the food!
