Rack Solid

i was unable to remove a Yakima Kayak rack. (a locking mechnism that wasn’t suppose to lock did so anyway.) Two Rack Solid staff came out and looked at it, and spent about 10 minutes fiddling with it, and successfully removed the kayak rack. Hooray. I asked how much i owed them. They said nothing, and that i should just recommend them to a friend. Skilled, nice people!

They installed my bike rack on my car, and I’m getting out into nature on my bike way more often now that it’s installed. I’m glad I went with the whispbar and the additional locks, because I appreciate how quiet the roof rack is and I’m also really glad to be able to keep my bike (and bike rack) locked when I’m using them. I was somewhat uncertain about using a roof rack because I’m 5’4, but it’s worked out great on my car. There’s a little bit of a learning curve with getting the bike on the first time, but then it’s easy, so don’t be discouraged if you’ve had one fumbly and terrible experience with roof racks — it gets better!

I lost the key to my Thule box, and called all over the Bay Area to find a replacement. Rack Solid Berkeley was the only place that had one (and was super cool in helping me find it). Great customer service, great store. Definitely excited to support this business in the future. Thanks guys!

This past Saturday I called right when the store opened — 10AM — looking to buy a rack and a cargo box installed for my 2011 GTI. I wasn’t expecting much in the way of availability, but when I got to the shop at 11:15, the fellow manning the counter expertly answered all my questions, helped me narrow down the cargo box that would be a good fit for my car and requirements, and had everything installed less than an hour and a half later. It was a fantastic experience and my only regret is I can’t remember the guy’s name who was super helpful and did the install. Great place to do business!

i have only checked back recently to see that i had two responses to my negative review– one kind private message from the GM asking what he could do to rectify the situation and one incredibly nasty and defensive one as shown below.
apparently i have been accused of trying to get a discount by writing my experience with the store? not so, as i said before, i already have a rack on my car now. i placed my order on amazon on 6÷6÷2015 and received it on 6÷9÷2015, a day before my review. so the claim that i was in the store «2 days before» is also not accurate.
berating a potential customer for relaying their impression of their experience is rather unprofessional, no? i have no vendetta against this store! what on earth would i gain from that? i already saved my money! wouldn’t a simple «i’m sorry you felt this way, we reviewed the footage with our employees and in our opinion, felt the customer service and quotes given to you were fair» suffice?
i am sticking with my original comments: i did not request a fairing or locks and yet it wasn’t, in my opinion, well-​explained to me that these were optional and as thus, i felt i received an unfairly inflated quote. i left the store feeling unhappy with the service i received. that is my experience and if security footage makes the owner feel otherwise, good for him! clearly this business does have many other happy customers.
i can only say i left feeling like my business was not welcome there. clearly, that is still the case.

Awesome shop and guys. Land Rover try and make it so you have to buy a factory rack, but Rack Solid were able to do a custom-​fit Whispbar rack which looks gorgeous and is super-​quiet and aerodynamic.

Great team quickly outfitted my Ford Flex with roof rack system for our kayaks. Friendly. Knowlegeable. Helped with selection and then did installation in under an hour. New Thule Aeroblade foot and bar system that provides for flexibility in carrier types — kayak, bike, whatever.

My husband and I came here to see their selection. The guy who helped us was very helpful and explained the difference between everything that they had. We have an Audi A3 Quattro and ended up going with Thule. We purchased the mounts and cargo basket and they installed it that same day.
I would of gave them 5 stars but I had to give them 4 instead. During the installation we noticed a few scratches on the cargo basket. When we pointed them out to the guy, he just told us that he would put some spray paint on it. For the price we paid, they should have replaced it with no problem.

The name says it all: lots of racks and solid selection from Thule Yakima Trakrac…
If you need a part that is not available on Amazon or REI who are you going to call? Rack Solid!
Nick and Chris knows their stuffs inside out. We lost part on our Thule bike racks and straps from our Thule Pulse box, they know right the way which part # to give us. We were impressed by their knowledge and customer service. If there was an option for 10 stars my wife would give it to them.
The price at Rack solid is the same as if we ordered online without the shipping cost ($ 10-​$ 20) and no wait… Nothing beats instant gratification while supporting local business!

It’s not just a clever name folks. This place is solid. I liked how the product was displayed throughout the store, and I was instantly drawn to the pretty orange and gray rack (kuat NV) that I ended up driving away with on the back of my rav4, on my new hitch no less. I dig it. Great customer service and product knowledge. I definitely felt taken care of and not taken advantage of. Highly recommended.

I recently purchased a Diggler scooter that I use for urban mushing, so I needed to get a rack to transport it to the trails. The scooter has a long wheel base and strange dimensions so I was concerned about it fitting on a bike rack. I called these guys up, and they told me to bring the scooter down. They took some measurements, then actually put the scooter on a rack to make sure it would fit. I did the install myself and couldn’t figure out how to install the locks, I came back and they did it at no charge. Oh, and by the way, they install the racks for like 15 bucks, so have them do it, believe me! Great customer service, good prices, I will definitely recommend these guys!

Ok. ok. ok. I should not have written a review before actually finishing the purchase. This is very generous at 3 stars at best, but I’ll say this…
If it was not for Anthony I would have given 1 star and never come back!!!
I may have had a limited perspective of the business operations but I imagine Anthony is equatable to the glue that holds this company together!
I went back on the weekend to do the test fitting and buy everything. I had my truck parked in the back, not in their lot, but on the street in the back. The salesperson Bob didn’t seem to know anything about the products.
Seriously confused. He didn’t even know that the fat cat can slant at an angle. He didn’t even know how to put on the roof rack accessories that he sold me, most specifically the snowboard rack! (Rack Solid emailed me shortly after writing this review and mentioned he had not been trained on snow season yet.)
He asked that I pull my truck around to the front so we could test fit, but I didn’t really understand why since they have a back area and there was only one other customer there.
I didn’t have change for the meter so I thought I could just rush in and let him know and re-​park. He was talking to another customer at this point, and just went on and on and on. I kept staring back at my truck antsy to let this guy know, but sure enough I got a ticket.
I can’t blame him for the ticket, but when I finally talk to him again, he asks me to move my truck to the back! What the hell man?
My friend and I take the truck to the back where he says he will meet us. After waiting for maybe 5 minutes he brings out the box. Then he seemingly disappears and we’re waiting outside for another 15 minutes.
A lady pulls around the back and the dude starts mounting a cargo box on her car while ignoring us besides a quick «thanks for being patient.» That woman came in a loooong time after us.
By this point I had said hello to Anthony who I met in the back parking area. He was working on some other project, and I could tell he was starting to get concerned about how long we were waiting.
He went inside to let the salesman know, but after almost 45 minutes total waiting, I just said screw this, waved goodbye to Anthony and left. But after calming down I just felt defeated and wanted to get this project done with, even if I had to put up with this B.S.
I called the store and I asked the original sales guy (I was calm, not angry) if he was ready to help me. He apologized profusely and said he would even stay late if he had to.
I went back and the salesman did come out to start helping me. But unfortunately he had a lot of trouble both psychically and with product knowledge. He had difficulties performing his work duties. At this point I was considering just saying «I’ll do it by myself.»
Along comes Anthony again, and thank god he did. He was surprised I came back, and he said he wanted to make sure I was taken care of. By now, the store is closed and we are working in the dark.
While the salesperson slowly grabs parts and tries to figure out how a clip works, Anthony is quickly and securely fastening everything like it’s second nature. You would think it would be second nature for the salesperson.
THEN Anthony found a problem with how the salesperson put the Thule Aeroblade mount on. The salesperson nearly broke the mount.
We were almost done and I asked Anthony to leave because I felt bad that he had to compensate for an incompetent co-​worker and he shouldn’t have to do this in the first place. I thanked him in the most sincere way I could.
I finished up with the salesperson, they price matched Any Mountain on the cost of the cargo box, gave me free installation, and I paid about $ 1200. I exhaustively left. By this point, not including the time I had left, we had put 3 – 4 hours into something that Anthony probably could have done in 20 minutes.
I was a bit pissed and not thinking clearly and forgot to ask for the box and documentation. I didn’t even get the hex wrench that came with the Thule bars. :-\
I was reminded to leave a review today while paying my parking ticket. This experience was so frustrating, but it’s finally done.
Drove about 700 miles with the full rack set up (thule bars, yakima skybox and yakima fat cat 4) and everything held up perfectly. Very sturdy, I’m pleased with the final result.
Thank you Anthony, this would have been a disaster without your help! I will probably come back, but if I see that particular salesperson again, I am turning around.

I went in to Rack Solid because I has lost a nut and bolt to my thule bike rack. Even though I did not purchase the rack from this shop, Nick was very kind and gave me the extra parts free of charge. I will definitely come back to this shop when I want to purchase another roof rack! Thanks Nick!

You walk into Rack Solid being able to touch and see all the possible rack options. I’ve been in here 4 times over the past year to inquire about various racks. Everyone has been knowledgable and kind to answer all my questions. I took advantage of a 20% off Thule sale going on thru September 8^th. I also was impressed they carried the colorful Rocky Mounts from Boulder, CO. The also carry Yakima, Whispbar, TracRac, Inno, and Monkey Bars among a few others (check out the website.)
They were super speedy on the install and now Jasper (my car) is ready for an adventure!

Update:
When it comes to reviews, especially towards the food industry, I sometimes tend to blow off steam and it can rub off on my other visits to non-​food places.
Been back to the SF and Berkeley locations, and these guys will put their hearts out to help however they can.

Going camping this weekend and just can’t fit it all in the trusty Vibe, so I Unilocaled on over to search for roof racks… Boom! Rack Solid results!
The two young gents there were helpful & cheerful. I called ahead to make sure about stock available to choose from. Then, as I arrived around noon, I could tell I interrupted the guys lunch. No worries. They helped me choose a Yakima basketcase for my extra cargo, and hooked me up with the hardware I needed: Long live the universal mighty mount! Fair price, no doubt.
Took that new stuff home and put it together myself. Loving it!
Oh, and they have GoPro stuff!!! I bough a floaty back cover for my Hero3. Bonus!!!

I was in need of a relatively cheap bike rack for my car and heard about these folks from a friend.
After seeing their stellar reviews on Unilocal,I decided to take the plunge and not purchase a bike rack on Amazon… If I don’t have someone show me exactly how to install the rack on my car, it’s likely to fall off.
I called them after hours and received a call back the next morning. Instead of calling them back, I decided to pay them a visit after work, but couldn’t get there until a bit before closing.
Instead of telling me to come back he next day, they were happy to talk to me about my options, and install my rack (a bit after hours, I may add).
They were even very courteous regarding my budget. When I have the funds to install tracks on the top of my car, I will certainly be back!

New to town and needed to pick up a rack for my mountain bikes. Great selection and prices were better than anywhere in town!
After explaining my needs the guys recommend the Thule Sidearm and it is by far the best /​most versatile rack I have owned.
About two weeks later the plastic piece that holds the lock cylinder in place was run over by a car — doh! Went in to pick up a replacement piece and the guys hooked it up for free. Can’t say enough good things about the service and knowledge at Rack Solid. Highly recommended. Happy toy hauling!
