Specialties
Believing that «Peace is conflict done well» (sm) Free Aiki Dojo and Golden Bears Aikido at UC Berkeley offer traditional Aikido and Martial Nonviolence Training for all ages. We practice traditional aikido on the UC campus and in Downtown Berkeley, as well as Martial Nonviolence, an applied process art which combines improvisational skills with aikido and group process facilitation for community-building and peace-making. Free Aiki Dojo is affiliated with the International Aikido Federation (Aikikai), Aikido of Berkeley under Kayla Feder Sensei (6th dan), and is a community service partner of Association Building Community.
History
Established in 2009.
Free Aiki Dojo was born organically as people wandered into founder Brandon Williamscraig’s solo training, at odd times and in unconventional places, to keep himself functioning while completing the research for and writing of his Ph.D. dissertation on the intersection of mythology and psychology in conflict facilitation and community building. A psychology undergraduate named Motoki Mansho began training in downtown Berkeley with Brandon Sense in June of 2010. Shortly after joining Free Aiki, the former asked the latter to help restore Aikido at UC as a student club (it had begun in 1969) under the name Golden Bears Aikido. Free Aiki and GBA created an indoor dojo together, just off campus in Downtown Berkeley, in order to bring the conflict study associated with aikido to UC, contribute to the cultural diversity of the area, and provide additional opportunities for peace training in Berkeley.
