History
Established in 1973.
The Missing Link began in 1971 when a group of former Berkeley High School students attending UC Berkeley formed three collectively run businesses on campus: a record store, an art supply store, & a bicycle shop.
We incorporated in Sept. ’73 and in 1978 we moved off campus to our present location at 1988 Shattuck Ave.
We are a worker co-operative, which means the business is co-owned & collectively operated on an equal basis by all the worker-owners. This kind of business benefits the workers by providing a sustainable, egalitarian, empowering workplace. It benefits the community because local owners are responsive to local concerns; profits are not exported outside of the community. It benefits customers because every time you walk through our door, you’re speaking to an owner, not an indifferent wage slave accountable to distant management.
