History
Established in 1972.
Minuteman Press of Berkeley was founded as Captain Copy in 1972 at the inception of a revolutionary business idea of commercial xerography. The Xerox 2400 copy machine could crank out an astounding 2400 copies per hour! Within a short time lithographic services were added with the acquisition of several offset printing presses.
Founder Fred Fassett did most of the printing in the early days, later running the camera department. Fred then moved on to handle the sales and marketing aspects of the business. In 1984 Fred gave the business a promotion to General Printing and moved the operation to the fashionable west side of Berkeley.
In 1992 the company became a California corporation under the moniker Synthesis Group providing expanded services in graphic design, publishing and a broad array of digital graphic arts with Fred serving as President. The company still specializes in books and publications for Bay Area firms, educational institutions and individual authors.
Meet the Business Owner
Fred F.
Business Owner
Fred was born and raised in Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania, a small farming community. A lifelong photographer and printer, Fred acquired his first camera at age eight. Fred got an early start in the printing business when he founded a neighborhood newspaper at age ten where he served as editor, typesetter, pressman and delivery boy, and was successful at giving away his family’s most embarrassing secrets.
Fred founded an underground newspaper during his high school years. He again functioned as copy writer, editor and distributor placing copies of the paper in the song books in the school auditorium at night. He did manage to achieve academic success as a National Merit Scholar and graduated in 1965.
Fred went on to higher education at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence where he earned a Bachelors Degrees in Fine Arts (1969) with an emphasis in photography, graphic design; and Architecture (1970).
