Kittredge Apartments

These apartments are owned by Townsend I LLC. I lived here for a year and didn’t deal too much with the agency, so I can’t really write a review on them. The apartments I Can talk about though.
Resting right on top of Pete’s Coffee and smack dab in the middle of Downtown Berkeley, it’s quite a convenient location. The apartment unit is only a block from the west side of campus. It’s surrounded by restaurants, movie theaters, and has easy access to public transportation (buses, BART and Zip Car). Not to mention, if you’re feeling lazy, there’s about 10 different buses that can take you up to campus: North, South, East, West, whichever side you’d like. As for grocery stores, take your pick. Tthere’s Safeway, Berkeley Bowl, Trader Joe’s and even a Grocery Outlet. There’s also a CVS and Walgreens; each are a block in the opposite direction from the unit.
The apartment itself is pretty nice– wood floors, recently painted white walls, and spacey. It also never gets too loud so studying at home is never an issue like it can be when living on Frat Row. And if your roommate is loud then there’s always the public library right across the street. The lease is month to month and ergo perfect for college students as our plans seem to be ever changing. In regards to laundry, there are two washers and two dryers all of which are coin operated. Beware though, if they break down, they generally take weeks to fix.
There are a few downsides: no parking, no sense of community (if that means anything to you), and apartment maintenance is subpar. The apartment manager, let’s call him D-​man, has communication problems. D-​man:
1. Is hard to get a hold of (the whole unit spent a few days during winter break without hot water; also, hopefully you never forget your keys and if you do, cross your fingers that you have a roommate with keys because D-​man won’t be home til past 9pm)
2. Doesn’t directly answer questions in an email
3. Doesn’t often provide maintenance assistance (my toilet flushes by the power of a safety pin which needs to be replaced monthly).
Thankfully, renters don’t really need to interact with D-​man too much. But let’s be honest, wouldn’t you enjoy greater peace of mind knowing that someone’s there to answer your questions and to help take care of your home when it starts falling to pieces?
