Handy Electronic Service

My husband has an old Pioneer amplifier/​receiver attached to large speakers that we use to play vinyl records or to attach a laptop in order to play music from the internet or CD’s. It was buzzing badly whenever we tried to use it. I took it to Handy Electronics and the man was very helpful, even carrying it from my car to the store as it was too heavy for me to carry. He charged $ 35 to diagnose the problem, then said he could have it ready the next day, and it would cost another $ 90 to fix. He assured me he could fix it, so I agreed to this. He called me when it was ready and I picked it up a couple days later. He had cleaned out a lot of dust and replaced the broken parts. He carried it to my car for me. It works perfectly and we are very happy to be able to listen to music again! I would recommend him to others.

I was traveling in Europe recently and broke my hair straightener. It was a fancy one that I had bought for $ 150 and really didn’t want to have to buy a new one, so I thought I’d see if Handy Electronics could fix it. After only a few hours, it was fixed! Turns out it wasn’t a voltage issue but an internal part had broken and he was able to fix it with materials in his store. So. Happy. His price was far less than buying a new one AND he was able to do it within the day! Great customer service, I’ll be returning in the future.

Took a Sony tape deck, not an expensive one, in for repair. Was asked for a $ 35 deposit and I did not question the terms. The terms were not posted nor were they written on the receipt. He called the next day to say he could fix it for $ 90 more. The deck cost about $ 60 new so, not really worth $ 125 to repair. When I went back in he said the $ 35 was a non-​refundable deposit to examine the item and provide a quote. I should have read the reviews here before I went in. I would not recommend this place unless you are really desperate to get something fixed and do not care about the price.

Went here for some basic advice on how to approach fixing my 50 inch Panasonic plasma TV (wanted more information before going to the significant trouble of trying to get that giant and heavy piece of equipment to his store) and just like the other reviewers have said, the owner was remarkably unhelpful and rude. This guy needs to learn that he can’t keep treating customers this way if he wants to stay in business.
Don’t go here: Instead, go to Alpha TV and Electronics in Oakland. They are super nice and will even do a house call for less than the mandatory minimum Handy charges for a basic diagnosis (even with YOU bringing it in!!!).

I tried this place for TV repair because of the positive reviews on Unilocal.But when I walked into the store, the man working was extremely rude.
While I was trying to explain the issue I was having, he began yelling at me when I didn’t understand his question. Then he seemed to decide that he didn’t want to help me and waved me out of his shop without a word, just walked away with a scowl.
I won’t waste my time here again, and I recommend you don’t either. Horrible customer experience and very messy place.

Handy’s owner was not helpful and not interested in giving advice for how to fix my problem. As with others reviewers, he acted annoyed and like he didn’t understand my questions.
(The Sound Well guy is nice and much more helpful. They share the same space, but not the same level of customer service.)

OMG DISASTER
I took in an expensive old turntable and was told the full fix would probably be around $ 80. I said OK but then I was told there was a $ 35 charge to look at it, non-​refundable. When I started to leave the guy, owner I think, said that he could ALMOST ALWAYS fix it. Well, OK. But I carefully explained to him that it was a valuable turntable, and that the cover was very soft scratchable plastic, and the wood was very valuable, could he please be careful? Yes, of course he said.
* No fix possible, $ 35 down the drain.
* When I returned to pick it up, I showed him how his repair tech cracked the cover, scratched it badly, then put a series of scratches in my rosewood base that I told him to please be careful of. When I did that, he responded by shouting abusively, and not listening to a thing I said, nor caring. When I told him that shouting abuse did not make a very good customer service experience, he repeated the shouts again. That’s all I got.
* At first when I walked in, someone picked up the wrong turntable, but said that one was $ 285 to fix (!). Maybe I got away lucky after all!
So in conclusion, the MO here is to charge around $ 80 for a power supply (see the other comments), charge $ 240-​$ 285 for any other fix (see other comments), but most often simply tell you sorry, and keep your $ 35 for nothing. Finally, this is not a place that takes care of anything that is valuable.
STAY AWAY FROM THIS DISASTER, especially with sound equipment, especially with turntables.

I took in a Philips Radio Docking station for Han to work on it. Unilocal seemed like it had given good reviews (wish I had checked the Filtered Reviews, but didn’t notice them).
Han, the owner, told me to bring it in. only to discover there was a unexpected $ 35 fee to even look at it (that fee going towards the repair if I decided to make it). As I had already gone there, I decided to go along with it. I asked what the minimum cost for the repair might be to get a idea of the range and he acted like he didn’t understand me. That should have been a warning.
He called me and told me that it was a power supply (I could have said that as the unit wouldn’t turn on at all) and said it would cost me $ 85 to repair it (with the $ 35 going towards that fee). I was surprised, as a new unit cost around the same amount. When I asked why he hadn’t told me that this was the lowest price I could expect, he again avoided the question and said I could take it or leave it.
I had very poor customer experience here and would not go here again if I could do anything to avoid it. I would give it less than 1 star, but don’t have that option.
Please be warned before risking going here.

My ten year old, top of the line Yahama receiver went South and I picked this place for convenience. Paid the $ 35 deposit and was told it would cost $ 300 with no break down of cost. Took it to Marin and got it fixed for $ 155($ 60 labor and $ 95 parts). I won’t be back

Thanks Ying! My review is about a week late but I found a LG 37inch in east oakland (yes, found… and I swear it was legit). I twas layin gout on the curb so I took it home and plugged it in to see if it would work, it did not. First I called my friend who works for the Geek Squad and he more or less told me Id be better off buying a new tv at the rate they fix things. I called Handy electronic Service and let Ying know I was gonna come by and drop it off… he had it fixed the next day, turns out a power supply malfunctioned and he was able to swap it out. Super fast and super affordable.

He was great! The Friday before Christmas my 32 inch Samsung decides to just not turn on. It’s only a few years old and of course I let the warranty expire in October. I felt set-​up. But anyway, I didn’t want to buy another t.v. as I’m planning a wedding, but couldn’t see myself surviving without a t.v. for the entire winter break. We called Ting up in the morning and brought it in a couple hours later. He was able to fix it within two hours. He seems to know a lot about televisions and he works quickly. The price was more than I wanted to pay, but not nearly as much as the Geek Squad. I would highly recommend him for anyone needing t.v. repair.

So great to still have a place like this, for those of us who don’t want to support the disposable society. Have taken old things there, and new things, and always repaired in a timely fashion. If unrepairable, there are sometimes a refurbished item to meet your needs. I recommend highly.

I had a 2 year old 55″ lcd Samsung. When i was watching t.v. i heard a pop and noticed no more power through power source. I took the t.v. to this man and he identified it in less than 30 min. He said it was a piece in the mother board that went bad. He orderd it same day and was done within 3 hours. Great service. Cheap price

Had a LCD TV that wouldn’t power up.
They diagnosed and repair it quickly for a great price.
Will definitely come back.

A great place to get your beloved electronics fixed. Mr. Han fixed my fabulous Sony MDR-​V900 headphones. It was a difficult job but he charged a very reasonable amount and made them better than new by using components that were more resistant to wear than the original. That is true commitment to one’s craft. Bravo!
