Ergo Sleep Systems

After 15 years it was finally time to say goodbye to my Tempuredic. Having read a lot of reviews about the chemicals and toxins in mattresses I was determined to buy an organic one. I drove over to Berkeley to see what they had at Essentia and was disappointed as it was clear there were chemicals used in their products. Next up, I stopped in at Earthsake. They had one rubber mattress that I liked, but it was a little soft for me.
Luckily, I spotted Ergo down the street and decided to stop in. Nel was incredibly generous with his time and explained all the differences in the mattresses they carry. I was encouraged to try lots of different ones and spend as much time as I needed to lying on each one. Once I narrowed it down to 2 – 3, he then gave me the prices, which were inline with what Essentia and Earthsake had to offer.
In the end I opted for the Obasan 8″ organic rubber mattress as it felt a little bit like a spring mattress without the springs and is an amazing mattress based on the way its constructed as you can customize each of the three layers and later change any of them.
I’m glad I was able to go on a Tuesday, as opposed to the weekend so that I could take my time and try lots of different options and get all my questions answered.
The quality and selection cannot be beat. I highly recommend buying a mattress from Ergo sleep systems. Remember: Good quality mattresses aren’t cheap, but like everything in life, you get what you pay for :)

We bought a queen mattress at ergo sleep, after looking at least 4 different organic mattresses stores in the area, but they had the perfect one for our budget here, we went with the super firm organic mattress as we wanted something on the firmer side.
We’ve had it for a year already and still love it, but we wanted to add some softness to the top, so we recently came back and they were so professional and helpful, we tried different kinds but went with the 3″ ergo topper, we had such an amazing night sleep last night! Love their products, I would buy a mattress from them again. PS. their store is beautiful.

This is an open letter to the owner of this store: I was outside your store today at 10:00am, planning on spending at least $ 1000.00 on new bedding needs… (your store was recommended by my neighbor) and to my complete surprise no one came to open the store ??? (I also saw 2 other female customers waiting to go in and shop there as well…) I finally walked back to my car at 10:17am, after waiting almost 20 minutes, I used m phone to locate another matress store… I’m not sure why your people didn’t come to work today, but it cost you a large amount of $$$. I am a person who appreciates convenience, and effort, two things that didn’t pan out this morning. I suggest you follow up and try to prevent this from happening again in the future. Not a very happy camper. ADIOS.

Visited the store today and made a purchase of an organic mattress (twin size). The staff was very helpful, kind and accommodating. They had the mattress delivered to the store for me within in an hour (awesome!) so i could take it with me today, they also helped me move around my minivan seats and kid gear to make everything fit! From a customer service standpoint, I couldn’t have been more pleased.

Though they went out of their way to find someone to deliver in time for our guests arriving, I’m giving 2 stars due the fact that this dealer does not offer a comfort exchange on mattress purchases. Make sure you know exactly what you want before ordering from here, to avoid being stuck with a $ 4000 mattress that puts your arms to sleep.

We purchased a mattress from Ergo Sleep Systems. We had a warranty issue and contacted «Nel» at Ergo Sleep Systems. Nel helped us through our issue with the manufacture and saw it through to the end. If for no other reason than Nel’s customer service I would definitely purchase my next mattress from Ergo Sleep Systems. We are also very happy with our mattress.

We were in the market for a sleeper couch and looked this place up. Simple inventory and the staff was very knowledgeable about the products and different options available. Specifically… We dealt with Leonard. He was great. Not pushy at all, knew when to give us space and made the shopping experience comfortable.
Needless to say we purchased what we had set out to purchase and can’t wait till it arrives.
I Definitely recommend this place for sleeper couches or mattresses.

This store didn’t show up in my Google searches for natural latex mattresses, but I happened upon it when I walked out of Essentia (disappointed). Glad I found it! Shaina was very helpful, knew her products, and patient while we tried multiple mattresses.
The showroom has good selection in a variety of mattress styles. Their latex foam is all organic, including the mattress covers etc.
In the end we went with another store (European Sleep works) because A) ergo doesn’t let you split the firmness side to side and B) the price was $ 1,500 more.
The mattresses are very comfortable and Shaina was great. Definitely check this place out.

Finally found a mattress I can love. OMI Flora Nouveau. It’s the top of the line mattress, and it wonderful — though if my husband liked it I would have gone with the largo, I would have chosen the Lago Nouveau.
But I have been shopping at the store for at least a year and maybe more. I tried to make our rock hard old (3 years old) expensive latex mattress work, but with various toppers nothing worked. I went to several other mattress stores that also sold OMI, but they didn’t have the selection I needed. One sold me a less than good wool topper (again OMI is the way to go with wool toppers), and the other tried to use pressure tactics to get me to buy a mattress quickly.
But at Ergo they leave you alone. They answer any questions you might have, but then they leave you alone. It’s the perfect atmosphere for buying a bed. You can go and take a nap to see how it works for you.
All that said, if you can at all afford it go for the OMI line. It really is top of the line. It’s not hot like a lot of beds we tried. And it’s so comfortable. My husband and are both prince/​princess in a pea types, but we both have our sleeping idiosyncrasies, and this worked for both of us.
As background, I have tried a Duxianna bed, and a McRoskey bed, the Dux was nice, but it started smelling. The McRoskey was good for a while but it started sagging after a few years and putting our backs out. Our very hard latex bed was a Savvy rest serenity bed, any topper we put on it, made it extremely hot. We also tried and returned two other mattresses. So when I say OMI is the way to go, I have some experience.
And Ergo is the place to buy it. We traveled around the Bay Area looking at them, but this is the place to try them out, and it’s the place to make sure you are really getting the bed you want.

I shopped all three stores that carry Natural Latex mattress in Berkeley and bought an OMI set from Nel. Ergo has the most selections among the three stores and therefore, a wider price range. Nel was very knowledgable about his products and let us take time to explore the mattresses in the store. We were concerned about the «no return» policy, however, after reading lots of the positive online reviews of OMI mattress, we decided to make the purchase and were very please with it. It has been three months and my back pain was much relieved… It was quite a wait for the mattress to be delivered, so I took a star away…

DO NOT BUY THESE MATTRESSES! I’ve only had mine for four months, and a significant amount of mold has grown on the inside plant-​based foam mattress (proven to attract moisture). The owner came to my house to do an inspection and report it to the manufacturers, stating that this has «never» happened. I had cleaned the outside cover of the mold that was seeping out from the mattress, so there was a water mark on it. Instead of making this clear in my case to the manufacturers, he let them come to the conclusion that this water stain CAUSED the mold on the inside, when it’s clear that it was formed from the inside out.
Instead of working with me on a deal to relieve this $ 800 damage, he insisted it’s a product of my environment and my negligence. I’ve now read three other reviews on here referring to mold, so unless you want respiratory problems from black mold, don’t buy these «organic» over-​priced beds.

I originally posted a one star review regarding this business and I would just like to state for the record for anyone who was influenced by that review it turned out that I was reviewing the wrong store so I sincerely apologize, and I in fact met the owner of the store and I don’t believe he even knows I met him but he’s a very nice gentleman and they do carry good products in their store, you should definitely give them a shot if you’re into natural bedding.

I really don’t like writing bad reviews but I feel so disappointed in my experience here that I want to warn others. Less than a year ago, my husband and I bought a king size Natura Tranquil mattress. I really wanted a chemical-​free, socially responsible bed and as we were near this store, we checked it out. The gentleman in the store was very knowledgeable and friendly. We also bought the mattress box, a wool topper and a wool comforter, so we ended up spending a lot of money in the store. The mattress was $ 1620 by itself. My husband was not sure it was a great idea as the cost is significantly higher than other beds he has purchased but he ultimately was okay with it as I was so eager to get a green bed.
Within a couple weeks, we noticed a dip in the bed and we both thought it would go away if we turned it and that it wasn’t a big deal (I think we didn’t want to face the reality that we had just spent a lot of money on an uncomfortable, faulty bed). After a couple more months my husband’s back started to bother him and eventually it bothered him so much that I decided to reach out to the store to see if we could get it replaced. Nel was very helpful, hence the 2 stars instead of 1. After about a month, we got a new bed, same type, but new. We’ve now had the bed 2.5 weeks and it is already starting to dip. Not significantly enough to that they will replace it, but it is significant enough that when we turn at night it feels like we are rolling either uphill or downhill and it is still bothering my husband’s back. He slept on my son’s $ 99 Ikea bed last night and felt it was a better mattress :(
I have reached out to Nel again, hoping we could get a different type of bed made of different materials and have been told that we can try to get it replaced again with the same style bed. After reading some reviews, I see that this is somewhat common with plant-​based foam, which this bed is made of. If I had told him 14 days after we originally bought the bed that we wanted to return it, he would have taken it back and we could have chosen a different bed. Even though this bed is brand new (I called him a week into it) he won’t let us return it as it is the store’s «policy» — he is part-​owner. He is also saying that this «molding» is normal. If this is considered normal, then I don’t know who would want to sleep on it?
If you buy a bed and notice it beginning to dip, return it before your 14 days are up! Itf your bed it like ours, it will only get worse and you’ll lose your window to return it. I really, really like the idea of a green bed and it pains me to write this bad review of a place that sells them but it is just not reasonable to have to compromise our physical health and pay twice as much for a bed to get a chemical free bed.

After about a year of looking (and drooling over getting a nice bed), my wife and I finally decided on a Natura latex bed. It has changed our lives. This bed is amazing! The sales people there were very patient and helpful. I would recommend them to anyone looking for an earth friendly bed. Great people, great beds! Thanks Ergo.

Poor, poor. We went in here to shop for pillows twice — the first time, we had the older South Asian man who knew his stuff — he was knowledgeable, and very nice. The next time we went in, we got the younger guy — he didn’t seem to know what he was talking about at all. He said, «how’s your alignment?» while we were trying the pillows instead of looking at us himself, he didn’t present us with a lot of options until we actually walked over and pointed at the rack full of pillows and said we wanted to try those, and didn’t know what materials the pillows we were trying were made out of (which is important, because despite the name, the foam in «Natura» pillows is 70% petroleum-​based, a fact I figured out when I got home. Grrrr.). Worst of all, the pillows we ended up with are much thicker than the samples in the store, which must be older and more broken-​down (more comfortable, in my opinion). After we spent $ 250 and brought them home, neither of us could sleep on them because they were too high! Unfortunately, unlike European Sleepworks, they don’t allow returns on pillows. Won’t be shopping here again.

So its clear in my review — I did not ask for the Chinook coupon to apply to the discounted mattress which was a small part of our purchase. I requested it apply to the full price king size bed, frame and mattress topper we purchased. The only limitation on the coupon was for organic items which this was not. The owners simply did not want to honor it. Still I am happy with my bed purchase and would recommend anyone to buy a pureLatex Bliss from Ergo — just take the 20% coupon from the Chinook book. My bad for not having it with my day of purchase.

I bought a ‘Pamper’ brand mattress set and topper from Ergo systems in January 2012. I was unwilling to buy with their no return policy, so Leonard (one of the owners) assured me that I could have one free exchange, and could return the mattress for a refund minus a $ 400 re-​stocking fee. He said the topper was non-​refundable. I accepted these conditions, and he wrote them on a contract, which he kept. Not having a copy was a stupid mistake on my part. The first mattress, so comfortable in the store, was a nightmare. I woke up with pain in areas I had never experienced pain in before. I traded that mattress for the ‘Nature’ mattress. The pain was still there, as the latex pressed too firmly into every area. I tried to return it within two weeks, but Leonard convinced me to try it for two more months, assuring me they would take it back within that time, and saying it often took that long to adjust to the owner’s body. Now that that time frame is over, he is denying that he ever said they would take it back and give me a refund.
I am challenging this through my credit card company and have reported them to the Better Business Bureau.
These folks know I am a struggling widow and are deliberately lying and manipulating to keep my money. And they seemed so nice, so charming…
Run, don’t walk, in the other direction.

I really like this store, mainly because the guy staffing it is deeply knowledgeable about the products they carry. They also carry two of the best organic bed lines I’ve discovered in my research on the topic — Organicpedic and Natura.
Spending several grand on such an important piece of furniture can be scary. Ergo makes it a lot less scary.

I wandered into the store today in search of a nice memory foam bed, but without latex… they had them here! I have a latex allergy, but found out that all of the proteins that people are allergic to in latex, are actually washed out during processing of the mattress materials… so they’re actually safe. Safe or not, when i hear the word «latex» I think about rashes all over my skin with bubbling painful blisters, and an itching that makes you want to knock yourself out just to get some temporary relief!
They guy that helped me, his name was Leonard, he was the coolest, most informative mattress dude ever, he was there to answer any & all questions, recommended some mattresses I should try out based on what I told him I was looking for & what I want a bed to feel like, and his recommendations were GREAT! He also knows exactly when to leave you to test out the beds… he’s not a «super hoverer»!
Now all I have to do is bring the boyfriend in to test out the beds, because my man (princess) has to be comfy too!

Last year, we bought a bed frame, mattress, topper, sheets, and a pillow from Earthsake. I wish we’d visited Ergo first!
They have a much larger selection of mattresses and pillows. We found a better topper today and I’m planning to stop by later to find the perfect pillow.
