In an industry of people I don’t trust, think care only about themselves and frankly are usually more bravado than skill, Chet Gohd is by far one of the most honest, committed and trustworthy people I have every worked with. I have now purchased two houses with him and refi’d once. He is very professional and timely in his service and quality.
I read some of the polarizing reviews here and I frankly find their validity is questionable at best. In fact, I would go so far to say that I don’t believe one word written. Why?
Because Chet saved my bacon when he didn’t have to. I feel the story is worth putting here because it speaks to the level of commitment Chet has to his business, his personal ethics and his client. In 2003, when I purchased my first house, my mortgage broker to put it simply was incompetent. During my purchasing process, this person tried to change my lock rate, didn’t follow through on anything and made it a living hell all 30 days I worked with them. As I approached the close date, my first daughter was born and I went to the closing on no sleep for 40 hours. When I arrived to the close, Chet was there. He informed me with great apology that this person who was one of 25 who worked for him was let go when it came to his attention of the poor behavior that was going on. He told me that he wanted to make sure that all went well, and actually stopped the close when he saw that what was promised me was not what in the loan docs at the close. The close was postponed until it was right, he gave me a free refi for my trouble and to this day I recommend him freely to anyone I know. I have not seen this level of honesty from an industry that is full of so many creepy self absorbed people, that I call to confer with Chet whenever I need him. And he always answers and always gives his objective opinion.
Ignore the bad reviews here… they are BS. Chet Gohd gives mortgage lenders a good name that 99% of them don’t deserve. If everyone handled the process with the integrity Chet Gohd does, the mortgage collapse might not have happened…

Chet is the reason I am a home owner today. I started my home search years ago, and when I finally put a timeline to find a home between June and September of last year, Chet and his team worked with me through the entire sometimes grueling process. I had various scenarios of what I wanted going in, and he was able to work the details of what each loan would look like, always giving guidance to ensure that I was going to be comfortable with my loan amount and making my monthly payments. My husband and I LOVE Chet. He was referred by my realtor who was a close personal friend. Let me just say that Chet is meticulous in both educating his clients about how to calculate housing and closing costs and finding out how much house you can really afford. When rates dropped significantly, we asked him if we should refinance. Instead of pushing us to do something that would personally benefit him, he took the time to ask us the hard questions, and helped us arrive at our own decision to hold off. He is nothing but ethical and helpful. I called him all the time with novice questions and he never made me feel stupid and always called me right back. I find it disheartening that someone would use Unilocal to smear his name. He’s truly a gem and probably one of the best in the business. He knows the Bay area so well.

Chet was outstanding, and I frequently recommend him to friends and family. I have several friends who have worked with Chet, and all are equally impressed. Chet was informative, honest, patient, and really went the extra mile for us. When he pre-​qualified us, his rate was more competitive than two other brokers we had spoken with. My partner and I found the house of our dreams, and consequently went quite a bit over our budget. Our loan was a complicated one, especially since we are both self-​employed. Though we threw him plenty of challenges, Chet made it happen AND made it seem effortless. Thank you Chet for your expertise!

Chet was recommended by our real estate agent, so we went to him. He flat out lied to us about our loan and caused us to blow our escrow deadline. I had to ask to speak to the CEO of RPM before his office would give me a straight answer on the loan closing delays. Luckily the seller was flexible and let us move in early and rent until the loan closed, but if Chet hadn’t been so slimey, we would have been informed and closed on time, saving a ton of stress and drama for me and my family. Stay far, far away from this guy. He does not have his client’s best interests in mind, only his own pocketbook.

Mortgage brokers in the state of California have a fiduciary responsibility to their customers. This means that they are obligated to serve the best interests of their customers. This legal requirement is an important protection, because mortgage brokers are offered incentives from mortgage lenders to sell loans to their customers that cost more than the going rate. When my wife and I recently bought a house in Kensington, our real estate agent recommended the services of Chet Gohd of RPM Mortgage. Based on her recommendation, we trusted him to represent our interests, which we eventually discovered was a mistake. He offered us a 30-​year fixed rate conforming loan from U.S. Bank at 4.875% with 1.25 points on May 20, 2010 when U.S. Bank offered the same 4.875% rate to the retail market with zero points. When we asked why his rate was higher than the retail rate from U.S. Bank, he said that as a mortgage broker, the rates that he had to work with were not as good as the retail rates. When we asked why anyone would ever work with a mortgage broker, given these circumstances, he explained that working with U.S. Bank directly would result in significantly inferior service and delays that would likely result in the loan not being approved by the escrow close date. Even though his explanation sounded suspicious, we were inclined to trust him because of the recommendation of our agent. Some time after accepting the rate, prompted by a series of blunders by Chet Gohd, we did a little research and discovered that, not only could he have offered us the retail rate of 4.875% with no points but that he could have offered us the same loan at an even better price based on his wholesale rates. He did not support our interests and he lied to us when we questioned the cost of the loan. Once we discovered the problem, we gave him several opportunities to make this right, which he consistently ignored. We also informed an executive at RPM Mortgage about the situation, assuming that the organization would not condone predatory lending practices, but they also failed to make this right. As a result of Chet Gohd and RPM Mortgage’s illegal practices, we paid at least $ 8,359 more (that is, the 1.25% of points that we paid up front) than we should have paid for the loan. We have filed suit against Chet Gohd and RPM Mortgage and are confident that our loss will be compensated, because the law clearly defines what they did as illegal. Why would they do this? Because they made more money from the mortgage lender by selling us a more expensive loan. In other works, they were greedy.
