A pleasant surprise. Steve D. was really efficient, helpful, and gracious. He had none of that cold and indifferent attitude I have usually experienced at smog check places in the past. His demeanor reminded me of the great customer care I have typically received in Japan but rarely in America. AND he had the best price in town. I appreciated the the comfy couches, reading materials, and free snacks while I waited. I was in and out very quickly, no extra waiting.

My first ever smog check and I have to say: this experience was a lot better than I figured it would be! Very quick & friendly service AND they provided a very nice waiting area (complete with complimentary snacks) even though the wait-​time was only about 10 minutes. A terrific outfit.

I called the day of (about 10 minutes before I wanted to come in) and was greeted with such kind assistance. I was in and out of there in less than 10 minutes, Steven took care of the electronic communication with the DMV, and there’s even a lounge area with free snacks. Steven was very clear in his communication on the phone about what services were included and for what price, as well as how to find him in Berkeley. Once there, he greeted me from the street and invited me to drive right on in then relax in their snack-​filled lounge area. Surprisingly, the whole endeavor took at most 10 minutes and Steven was also very clear about what information from the certificate and DMV renewal paperwork I’d need for later. Super-​quick, clear, warm, inviting, and efficient. EASY!

Called in on Sunday, got an appointment immediately for the next slot, the guy gave me instructions on how and where to park, I drove right over, the guy gave me a discount for making an appointment, and then I was out in fifteen minutes. Including a $ 1 card fee, I paid $ 40.
The guy who did the smog check, and the woman who was sitting behind the front desk were both very friendly. I will definitely come back!

The service was stellar — I had an appointment at the auto shop around the corner and wanted to see if I could sneak in for a smog check too while I was in the neighborhood. I got an appointment right away, the check took 10 minutes, and the guy helping me was friendly and efficient. Highly recommend!

Made an appointment for the next day, and the person on the phone was very informative and professional.
When I went in, service was just as friendly, helpful, and quick. The whole visit took about 15 minutes, and the person was very clear about what info I needed for the DMV. Definitely recommend this place for a smooth-​sailing smog check!

Tall-​vehicle friendly! I have an RV that is short for an RV at 24ft, but plenty tall (about 12 feet with the rooftop AC). They were able to accomodate me no problem, they have really tall rollup door entryway. For the RV, I just needed to back itl in, so the exhaust pipes were in the door. Easy to work with, great customer service. The RV price is more than a regular passenger car, but it’s clearly stated and he will tell you the price over the phone. No hidden costs. Took about 30min for the full inspection, test, payment, and out the door.

I came here a few weeks ago to get my car smogged. Didn’t have an appointment and they were able to take me in no problem (though I would recommend calling ahead of time just in case). I was literally in and out. The place looks different than the Unilocal photos, more homely and welcoming, not at all empty like.
Steve was super nice and informative, he answered all my crazy questions without a problem (or any annoyance). Prices were also listed front and centered so you knew how much you were spending (no hidden agendas).

P. S: There is a Unilocaler saying i wrote a fake review. I went there in 10/​2014, so i have no idea they have closed right now. Unilocal should update their business status, not me. I just wrote a review cuz he really provided good service.
Fast smog check. The guy is very friendly. We got $ 10 discount but there is $ 10 extra for suv. I will definitely come back to this store. Thanks Unilocal for the discount

I originally had a bad experience because of Mario being rude and obnoxious, it was not his first compliant. Once the owner saw my review, he tried to talk to Mario to correct his behavior. Mario was unreceptive to change, so the owner fired him. Ferhat (spelling) the owner took the time to e-​mail me and make things right. No hassle, kind and professional. He cares about how his smog crew treats customers and tried to give Mario another chance. Berkeley Star Smog was well kept and clean. Even with two cars ahead of me, I only had an ½ hour wait. Most of all– has an owner that runs his shop with pride. I have a trick out rice rocket (Nissan) and will return because of Ferhat.
I would print out the discount coupon and bring it with you.
