They had five waitstaff to serve 15 tables, none of which had people. We were served water that was poorly filtered and smelled. The food took 30 min to serve. Again there was no one in this diner. The food showed up, my panini was undercooked, the chicken was raw and rubbery. My niece’s pancakes were made with sour milk and were simply disgusting. I got sick immediately from the chicken and had to go to the bathroom that had a half height stall so people walking in could see everything, the bathroom was old and smelly like mold. This place has run its course and should either go out of business or sell the place to someone more deserving to be a restaurant owner.

The kitchen has gotten slower here lately but the food is still good and the service is always friendly. This diner is always our first choice in the area.

I recently moved to Bergenfield but have visited this breakfast gem before. I really appreciate a good family breakfast spot for my Sunday mornings.

OK everytime I come here, this place use to be great back when I was in High School, now its just okey. Better off going to other dinners around the area that are close.

I only give this two stars for the mere reason that we came on National Pancake Day because IHOP had a line around the building and this diner didn’t even know it was National Pancake Day so of course there was«no special» created, which would have been a nice bonus. The pancakes are over priced at $ 7 – 8 for a 3 stack and they use frozen blueberries. At that price… for heaven sake use real fresh berries. Especially if the place is called Matthew’s Diner and PANCAKEHOUSE! The staff is friendly but the décor is old and dated.

The service is tremendous, the people are so kind and welcoming! When you’re at Matthew’s you’re truly a part of the family. The food is not only good but also affordable. My favorite thing to order is the bacon cheeseburger deluxe! I love this diner and am a regular customer. I recommend to all :)

Really wasn’t impressed with this place. The service was good and our waitress was a sweetheart but the food is a tad below average. The French dip sandwich was dry and didn’t hold a lot of taste. The combo appetizer is basically an assortment of deep fried foods. There are better diners in the area to spend ten dollars per meal(at least). They do serve alcohol so that is always a plus!

Basic diner. Service is always good, food is always tasty. My boyfriend and I love their Greek Lemon Chicken Soup… not totally authentic, but for a diner it is delicious! Their French Toast is amazing as well! I’ve had a lot of their food: Panini’s, wraps, burgers, apps, omelettes, pancakes, etc. I’ve never had a complaint about anything. Definitely a quality basic Jersey diner!

1.5 because our waiter was so nice. Went here because a girlfriend and I bought a living social deal. I ordered a patty melt and the waffle a LA mode with warm apple and ice cream. The patty melts meat didn’t look very appetizing what so ever. And the warm apple wasn’t very good either.

So unhappy with my meal. I ordered a rueben panini sandwich. I open up my food and not sure what I just wasted my $ 12 on. 1st it was open faced, which threw me off guard since I expected my sandwich to be closed. Then it had a weird smell. I keep giving this diner a chance and it keeps disappointing me. It’s overpriced and the food quality is horrible.

We had our Sunday morning breakfast here. I had a wonderful experience. I ordered omelette which has marinara sauce — and it was totally worth trying it. Their pancakes are good. My husband had banana pancake which were just okay but overall the service and the quality of food is great.

Quick service, great waiters, delicious food! Some of the best pancakes I’ve had at a diner, so light and fluffy. The sausage was delicious and the home fries were perfectly cooked. The meals were reasonably priced especially with all the food they Give you. It was such a good experience and will return again for breakfast!

Breakfast is always spot on. Food comes out quick and hot and made to satisfy. Very friendly atmosphere with an old school swag. The service is good for a neighborhood dinner. Sunday’s it gets packed. If you’re tall ditch the booth. Get a regular table with chairs. Leg room is limited in the booth.

Don’t live too far from this diner and rarely go… BUT when I do the food is delicious. Normally have breakfast… Fluffy pancakes, crispy bacon, and fresh coffee always available. They cater to your order so if you aren’t looking for ALOT of food you can minimize it ie; got one egg, bacon, one pancake and toast… Yea I was craving a bit of everything. There sandwiches are killer and awesome. Not a fan of their chicken parmigiana, but hello most diners don’t make great Italian do wasn’t expecting awesomeness. The place is always packed, the wait staff always polite and fast and meals are affordable. I know when I come here I will have a great meal!

Mathews Diner is what you expect from a diner. Classic american looking eatery with great food tagged along with fair prices. Nothing about the diner exceeds expectations, but it does fill your appetite with very large portions. Ordered a chicken parm sandwich and my friend ordered a waffle with whipped cream and bananas. Both meals were excellent and the plate was very big(big enough that neither of us finished our meals). Besides the good and large portion of food, that was pretty much it, everything else was more or less standard that you wouldn’t criticize, but won’t say anything that can make this place stand out compared to others. Great food and prices makes this diner a classic place to have breakfast, but that’s it. Great place, but not unique, still a place to visit if you want breakfast and if you’re around the area.

My experience was OK not great or horrible either. My potato pancakes were pretty good they were different so that was a plus. They were stuffed with parsley, potatoes & onions, with 2 options available, short stack or regular. The apple sauce wasn’t good and the sausage looked nasty so I didn’t even try it at all. Usually kids meals are cheap, but not here, it was $ 7.95 for any meal, while mine was $ 7.75. The chicken tenders were not fresh, they were frozen and undesirable, but the fries were good! French toast were descent but on the sweet side not sure why but they were edible. Just looking around seeing the food coming out some of it you can tell it was frozen such as the sausage, vegetables & chicken tenders, but for what they do cook its not bad. Service was descent and food came out in a fashionable time. Would I crave this place? No, never but if I’m in the area and nothing else is opened then yes.

I’m a local in Bergenfield and I’ve been there twice. The last time I visited Matthews was 2011. Just like both my experiences I waited to get greeted and seated for a while and it was quite empty and the waiter was very rude. In both my experiences I noticed my cup and cutlery were dirty and had some sort of chunks of pasty residue of lord knows what. Dirty is best to describe this diner. Iam currently in the process of finalizing my Top 10Diners in North Jersey and it saddens me that my local diner won’t make it. … Yuck I’m having flashbacks Food 3⁄5 Establishment 2⁄5 Waiters and Staff 1⁄5 Price 3⁄5 Bathroom 3⁄5 Cleanliness 0⁄5 Overall 1.5÷5 but I’ll leave it at 2 stars 4years since I’ve been here. Might return if they change staff and owner.

NEVERCOMINGBACKAGAIN Why? Not because of food, but because of CUSTOMERSERVICE So me and my friends went there around 12am because we were so hungry after a tiring workout. Take note: we went there to get food and eat for a bit because our bus was still at 12:40am to go home(NYC). So we ordered our food for to go then when we got our food, we were eating for a bit since our bus was still not there THEN the manager/owner steps up to us and started telling us to not eat there if we ordered our food for to go.(FUNFACT: NOBODYWASEVENEATINGTHEREATTHATTIMEEXCEPTFOR A ONEGROUPOFPEOPLEACROSSOURTABLE, but that’s it). So I tried to explain that we were just really hungry and tired while waiting for our bus(which is only walking distance from the diner) but he immediately interrupts me as I was explaining to him. ASIF it was a big deal to not eat our food there. After that, we just immediately got up and left. Food is a 2.5 out of 5. Kind of overpriced but whatever. What people want is good customer service, with that being said. Me and all my friends are never coming back to this place ever again.

Came here for breakfast on a Thursday late morning. Ordered the Italian omelette which was huge. There was a lot of sausages and vegetables in my omelette which were good but some how it didn’t give any flavor to the eggs. The home fries were alright after you put salt and pepper on them. The service was eh. Was hard for me to catch the waitress to get another glass of water or more napkins. Would deff try this place one more time.
