Whether you are starting music lessons, continuing music lessons, renting a musical instrument, buying musical instruments, buying sheet music or music supplies, we are here to help.

We supply top quality musical instruments for school band programs and maintain a great selection of acoustic guitars, electric guitars, drum kits, violins, and pianos. All of our musical instruments are available for sale or rent-​to-​own.

Our two facilities are conveniently located on First Street in Downtown Benicia and Livermore, California. Each music store has over 2000 square feet of floor space that includes seven private music instruction studios and one large group music studio.

ABC’s music instructor faculty includes over 25 experienced professional musicians who are active in national and international performance. In addition, over a dozen of our music teachers are credentialed with PhD, Masters, or BA Degrees. We also offer full in-​house repair services and classes on care and maintenance.

History

Established in 2007.

Stan and Marianne Houston purchased Benicia’s ABC Music in 2007 and The Music Source in Livermore in 2009. Both have years of experience in music performance and education. Their dream is to continually improve the stores and bring music to both communities.

Stan & Marianne frequently sponsor and promote concerts where the proceeds go to various music programs within a school district. Make sure to keep an eye out for «ABC Music presents» when checking upcoming events in your local news and internet service.

Lots and lots of cool toys in there now. Science kits and toys to expand little gray matter. Now along with Bookshop Benicia I never have to go far for a great kid’s gift. Appropriately, they renamed the place «Mozart, Einstein and Me»…My daughters take piano there. Monica is super! Did you know they give all their profits back to the Benicia schools’ music programs? Pretty cool.

I brought in a pair of 17 year old Monitor Audio tower speakers for inspection, as they weren’t sounding correct. Kevin found the tweeter and one woofer blown on one and a woofer blown on the other. Kevin spent months sourcing his connections for replacements, but the needed parts are no longer available on this planet. MAJOR kudos to you, Kevin! I appreciate your diligence. Thank You!

I really like these guys personally. BUT — they rented me a really crappy saxophone, and then tried to charge me for another month after I returned it. I understand why they have a lot of 5 star reviews, and I really wish I could add to that list, but my experience was not positive in the end.

I exchanged emails with ‘Stan’ regarding information about whether to consider buying a guitar as a gift. In our exchanges it became clear he knew what he was talking about and that an in-​store visit was in order to show me some ‘hands-​on’ answers to the questions I posed.
When I dropped into the Benicia store I met Ian and went over some of my questions and concerns. He was very professional and LISTENED COMPLETELY to my questions before responding. That in itself was refreshing! His answers made sense and he backed up some with some guitar playing.
Long story short, I was able to select, what I felt, was a way-​cool guitar for my nineteen year old grand nephew. If it doesn’t light his fire, the exchange policy seems fair and everything was put in writing.

This is a small shop in a small town and I appreciate the convenience of having a music instrument store so close. I needed a guitar cable and they had what I needed in stock. Service was friendly and I had a pleasant experience. On a separate occasion, my trumpet mouthpiece was stuck and they unstuck it for me free of charge. I would really like this local store to be around forever because it is so conveniently located. despite their small inventory they have good service so i will make sure to stop in and try spending my money here first before I shop online.

This is a review about their violin teacher Clif Foster. My 7 year old son started playing the violin a year ago. He has recently started playing under the direction of Clif Foster and in a span of 6 weeks, he’s learned more than he has learned in 7 months from his other violin teacher (she will remain nameless). Clif is amazing with children and is very relaxed and effective when it comes to communicating with little people (and parents). He is very structured which is what the other violin teacher lacked and he actually teaches techniques (like down bow, reading notes and how pieces should sound when they’re played). It’s amazing what a good violin teacher can do — he has worked wonders.
As for the actual store, I haven’t been in there.

I really like this place. Son took drum lessons there, and we’ve bought various clarinet items (for my daughter in the band). Stan and his wife care about the community and customer service is friendly with information freely being given out without pressure. The place does not have high end guitars/​amps which is a negative, but they can order items for you. You could get stuff a littel cheaper online, but having consultation for your music needs is worth something, and I think it is good kharma to give business to people who give good kharma to the community.

My two daughters have been taking piano lessons here since they were 4 and 5. They are now 6 and 7 and can read music! Thanks to Monica. She is a great teacher. Even goes out of her way to have her students perform at recitals. Great experience for everyone. We love this place!

ABC Music is not a music store. ABC Music is a music institution. By that I mean, yes, you should purchase musical instruments and parts and repairs and such from them to be sure. Much more, though, is that you should experience what it is that makes ABC Music a slice of Americana that we should support because of what it means to the community. My daughter took piano lessons at ABC Music and her still-​resonant appreciation of music is due in no small part to her experience there. I decided to take guitar lessons with my daughter and needed a guitar. It was not a difficult choice to consult with Stan at ABC Music for my new guitar and, value-​conscious as I am, I left the store with a new guitar because I felt that I received the kind of value and service that was much more common years ago when local stores had to EARN your business. I left the store after being «interviewed» for my guitar in order to ensure that I was matched with the correct instrument. I left the store after Stan realized that I couldn’t have been more of a novice and he insisted that I sat down for an impromptu lesson… this is in addition to the complimentary lesson that he offers for buying the guitar! This is the level of customer service that we miss when we go to the «big box» stores. This is why I’ll continue to support Stan and ABC Music.

Wow! What a difference from when ABC Music was in the Southampton Shopping Center. I don’t know if they have new owners or what… I had given up on ABC Music until they moved downtown. I went in and found the staff to be attentive, helpful, happy, cooperative and full of information. I will be back there for my music needs.

I bought my guitar from Stan at ABC music, he is very knowledgeable when it comes to instruments, and helpful with other people in the business, he referred me to an excellent piano tuner who was absolutely 100% fairly priced, professional, and informative.
It would not be possible to give anyone a higher rating than ABC music!

ABC music is probably the best music store/​academy in Solano county. It is owned by Stan and his wife, (sorry can’t remember the name!). They are an amazing couple who share their passion for music and it shows. I took lessons from Stan and had to stop because i couldn’t afford it, he is amazing and taught me so much!
If you need music accessories, lessons, equipments or just help deciding what to get, ABC music is the place to go! And they have tons of music sheets to choose from and if they don’t have it at the store they can order them for you! how amazing are they!!!
