Can Tho Market

although this shop is nothing stellar like that of other gigantic international grocery stores this shop should have most of your asian cooking basics:

it’s tucked in between two shops in a little plaza, first is restaurant Coffee First Saigon Grill and a travel agency on the other side.

Tiny mom and pop grocery store. I was visiting from out of town and wanted to make dinner for my friends. This was the closest asian grocery store to her house. They are WAY overpriced. I got a small pint size ziplock bag of herbs for $ 1.25…less than half the amount of herbs for the same price as other grocery stores. Expect to pay 25 to 40% higher than other stores. Not coming back.

Can Tho is a small family run Vietnamese market. Small as in smaller that your average Plaid Pantry. But considering HIllsburrito has a diverse population of 100,000 thanks to Intel, it is unbelievable that we have ZERO Asian markets, Can Tho, on the edge of Hillsboro/​Beaverton is a god send.
A drive from my house to one of the bigger Asian markets in Beaverton (Uwajimaya, Asian Food Center) is a teeth pulling, hair graying, frustrating 25 minute drive through the traffic of the burbs (A big eff you, middle-​finger-​shout-​out to TV highway, 217 and the 26!). For what Can Tho gives up in size, it makes up for in distance. The hours are 9AM-​8PM.
Can Tho is four aisles packed to the unorganized brim of Asian groceries. For such a small place, I love the variety in Asian vegetable and herbs in their produce section. The biggest bonus is that they carry Portland’s Natural Bui Tofu (aka the best tofu around). Twice a week they pick up a supply of Natural Bui’s freshly made Tofu and some of their best sellers like their fried lemon grass tofu. That lemongrass tofu is one of my favorite snacks. Despite it’s size, they always have what I need in Asian specialty items.
Thanks you Can Tho for being the only Asian market near Hillsboro.

Small cramped store with over-​priced Asian groceries. Expect to pay 20−35% higher prices than other area Asian grocery stores.
Meh, I was in the area so I stopped in and bought 2 small bags of groceries for $ 40.

Galanga, kaffir leaves and chili oil… oh my! I know I know, but I get happily excited and overwhelmed when I go to this fab little store. :D I absolutely love having a Asian market close to home! What is really great is that they have fresh produce as well as frozen individual sized of said vegetable, root or herb for your delicious dinner of choice you know you have planned tonight. Mmm!
THE only reason for four not five stars is they don’t carry our beloved pure matcha green tea powder. Shoot. :(so that’s ignites a trekking ordeal across town to another large Asian store that has it. (And I spend WAY too much money when there, therefore I try not to go often).
I danced my way through tunnels of aisles full of an array of different hot oils, chili powders, hoisins, fish sauces, fresh and frozen meats/​seafood, tofus, and hard to find Asian candies. Green tea kit kat??? Of course!
These store is attached to a Phở joint, which I have never been to before, weird, I wonder if it’s the same owners as the store? I should ask, they are very polite and know their stuff. So probably know their phở too. Same signage outside, so guessing they are connected somehow. Anyways, very convenient and have everything you can ask for!!! (Minus green tea) :)

This place is far more Asian convenience store than Fubonn– class mega mart. I suppose it suits the needs of those stuck deep in the SW when Umanjiwa is too far a drive, or traffic is too bad and time too short. One entire aisle here (out of 3) is devoted to noodles, mostly of the rice/​ramen variety. The middle aisle is mainly canned goods, including their delightful take on SPAM, where I finally learned how to properly say it in Spanish («Carne Preparada” — - not as much fun as I’d hoped it would be… in fact, the term seems a little bit… canned… *ducking rotten fruit being hurled my way*). One wonders if «Can Tho» in fact means, roughly translated, «Canned rendered meat product.»
I also noted bulk tubs of dried, shredded meat with the promising label of «Pork Fu». While traveling in Australia, I came across a similar shredded, dried pork product that they there called «Pork Floss», and I was so impressed I sent several packages to friends back home. Pork Floss, meet Pork Fu, baby. You may very well imagine the puzzled emails/​phone calls received, on behalf of said care packages…
All in all, when the Zomb-​poc-​alyspe descends, there would be worse places to find oneself barricaded for a few months. I’m betting the Pork Floss, er, Fu, will out-​survive the last of them undead creeps…

Since moving a few months ago, I found myself driving up and down Walker to get home from 185^th. However, despite all that, I only just noticed Can Tho Market about a week ago. We made a point of going in on Monday (2÷4÷2013) and were delighted to find an abundance of all our favorite brands and ingredients (normally found at Uwajimaya or Fubon). Tucked away, and certainly packed floor to ceiling, this place is worth checking out. I will certainly be stopping in more frequently on my way home!

The good thing is the service. I usually go in with a list from my husband since he is the cook. The store is conveniently located for me to pick up things up on my way home from work. All I have to do is give the lady my list and she will gather everything for me. If you don’t see something you are looking for just ask. So far they have had everything needed for Asian cooking.
This is a small store but packed with all kinds of Asian grocery items. Fresh vegetables, frozen times etc at great prices.

This is a nice little market that carries an array of Asian/​Vietnamese grocery. They are not as extensive as a full-​size grocery store but it does have enough variety for a full meal’s fare; not just a quicky mart.
They have 50lb jasmine rice, sticky rice, even black sticky rice, pre-​made banh mi, Vietnamese desserts and pastries, frozen meat, frozen yam/​lemongrass/​coconut/​etc, variety of Asian drinks, fresh pre-​pack meat, frozen fish, fresh veggies (i.e. water spinach, fuzzy melon, opa, bac ha, baby bok choy, Asian chives, cases of mangoes, etc), basic Asian sauces, variety of instant noodles…

Local little asian market tucked away around the corner and behind the Pet Smart, Java Mama, SuperCuts, old Craftwarehouse (or whatever). I love the small stores like this with everything you’d expect including cooking supplies like strainers, chopsticks.

This place is beautiful. Almost completely invisible from 185^th, this little market is almost completely hidden by the strip mall at Walker. in fact i just saw the name ofth place out of the corner of my eye as my boyfriend was driving across the Walker intersection of 185^th, and it was so nondescript looking from the outside it could have been anything!
This is such a hidden gem and i am so glad i glanced it! They have a whole wall of refrigerators filled with awesome Asian produce… fresh green veggies of all kinds, gingers, spices… we picked up some Chinese long beans while we were there. They had fresh mango, papaya, and DUCK EGGS sold by the PIECE! I mean, how awesome is that! Also they had a whole aisle almost full of different hot sauces and seasoning sauces. Yum! The lady working the counter was very nice, and overall their prices were really reasonable!
If you live in the area and haven’t noticed this place yet it is really worth a visit!

So this tiny little market isn’t as big as pacific but it is alot closer to me and does it’s job.
The vegetables are all in the fridge so i’d assume it’s not as fresh as it can be. but what i do like is you can get access to other vietnamese stuff without having to drive all the way to NE. the savings in gas and time justifies the slightly higher price. if you’re in the area this is worth a look for vietnamese grocery.
