Maxie Café/Deli! Best sandwiches in town! Philly steak with the works! Yummm! Great service. Had to wait for a little since place was a little busy, but we’ll worth the wait.

The décor became much more comforting than the previous owner. The watermelon smoothie is one the best I’ve had

For a former avid Yat Yat Sweet visitor, where Yat Yat Sweet left off, Maxie Café just did not pick up. It’s hard not to compare the old tenant with the new tenant because the entire location is the same as Yat Yat Sweet, externally and internally. The interior has new black tables and chairs, but the look is still pretty much the same as it once was. Because Yat Yat Sweet existed, it really spoiled customers because their menu was so robust with so many different flavors of cold desserts, sago sagos, tong sui, bubble milk teas, flavored teas, yogurt teas, slushes, HK style ice drinks and beverages! The list just went on and on where your head would spin! With Maxie Café, I was quite disappointed with the menu selection. The number of items were extremely limited and especially the small selection of flavors for each type of dessert/beverage. I ended up ordering a cold Black Sesame Tea and it was just alright. It was a bit on the watery side so I wasn’t too happy about it. I think a real telltale sign of how good Yat Yat was compared to Maxie is the number of customers. When I came here on a Friday night, there was not only parking right in front, but there was all but 2 customers inside! Back in the Yat Yat era, you would have to circle around for quite awhile to look for parking and hardly was there ever an empty seat on weekend nights. I hope Maxie Café succeeds, but in order to do so, they definitely have to work on expanding their menu.

We got the passion fruit and mango slush. It was refreshing. We got some strange concoction with durian, tapioca, jelly, etc., but it was yum. The guy gave us a free mango pudding after he messed up on our order. He quickly fixed the problem once we told him. A small neighborhood gem.

I heard from my sister that Yat Yat Sweet has transformed into another dessert spot — Maxie Café which I was really excited about. After having dinner with a girlfriend next door at La Granja Peruana Restaurant, we stepped next door to Maxie Café. The décor and layout is very similar to Yat Yat Sweet, except there’s more luxurious-looking tables and chairs. The menu is similar too, but pricing seems to be a bit higher. I ordered a grass jelly with mixed fruits(mango, strawberry, honeydew, and cantaloupe). It was around $ 5.00-$ 6.00. I forgot the total price. It was served in a container made out of paper/cardboard(not very sturdy). The dessert was delicious. Not too sweet and fruits were fresh. I’m not sure if I would be back any time soon, service doesn’t seem to be very good at Maxie Café and it doesn’t seem to be very lively or welcoming at this café.

We ordered the popcorn chicken($ 3.50), mango sago with mixed fruits(6.50?), and shaved iced with ice cream and three toppings($ 6.75). The popcorn chicken were really small in size, which made me feel like it wasn’t worth it for $ 3.50 because I can get bigger pieces at Vivi’s for the same price. However it came with a few pieces of Chinese colorful chips and didn’t taste bad. I never tried the mango sago with mixed fruits but judging by appearance they gave very little amount of fruits, maybe because they’re cut up into smaller pieces. My friend did like it though. What I liked the most was definitely the Shaved Ice with Ice Cream and Three Toppings but still wasn’t able to boost this review to a 4 stars. I gotten green tea ice cream(since they ran out of mango flavor) with lychee, watermelon, and bananas. The fruits were fresh and taste great, they gave you two big scoops of ice cream so that’s good, but the shaved ice are still stuck together in really huge chunks so I was unable to eat it at all!

I really want to like this place but it’s just not cutting out for me. I ordered the black glutinous rice with durian and it was very watered down. It also came with a hard ball of glutinous rice. The drinks here are just like any other place and they also use flavoring syrup in their smoothies. I would’ve at least expected them to use only fruit in their smoothies like munchies but I saw them holding this bottle squeezing this pink sticky liquid into the blender. The only good thing we ever ordered from here was the scallion pancakes where they at least used scallions.

I don’t think the Yat Yat replacement will stay open long. Everytime I pass by, it is virtually empty. The décor is nice in there but the desserts are blah. The sesame paste was very watery due to too much milk. The smoothie I ordered tasted like soy milk. With more competition around the neighborhood, Munchies is a better alternative.

Was told by fd that it kept the exact same table setup as yat yat sweet. Came in a Sunday afternoon, only one table was occupied. The were take out menus and table menus in Chinese and english. I had the matcha red bean smoothie. It was a New flavor so the price was a bit higher then other smoothie. Tasted strongly of green tea matcha and toppled with a handful of red bean. Wish there was more red bean because I liked red bean more the green tea. Friend had the frozen durian with grass jelly soup. There was pop balls and regular jelly in the side. It was Hard to mix the durian but my friend liked it. I like that it didn’t have a strong durian smell because I would have ran away. The menu was filled with lots of nice sweets. Would come again to other sweets.

Honestly taste like shit. Both my durian and mango sago was so water down. Everything was so overpriced too. Never coming back. If I could give zero stars I would, but I can’t. So 1 star! Bring back YATYAT!!!

This dessert/café replaced the previous Yat Yat Sweet, and I’m glad they did. The desserts are much better than Yat Yat. I had the fresh fruit papaya smoothie and the mango sago tong sui. They just opened this past Tuesday and I went on a Saturday night. It was empty that night, perhaps because people don’t know about this place yet. The fresh fruit papaya was a tad bit sweet. I think there was added sugar in there. The texture was just right and the flavor was there, but I prefer no sugar added. The mango sago had a thick texture to it with a good amount of mango pieces. I definitely recommend this dessert if you love mango! They have about 4 – 5 staff members working. The staff members are nice and knowledgeable about their menu items. Nice, comfortable seating and a large sofa. There is also a TV located in the middle of the café showing music videos. With the large selection of menu items, I would definitely come back here again. I can’t wait to try the fresh mango smoothie or the durian sago!

Ambiance — Casual, plenty of seating, comfy leather black sofa is a plus! Bathroom in the back and free wifi also. +2 stars Customer service — Excellent. I accidentally spilled my drink and a new one was quickly made. Also they explain everything clearly and double check your order. +1 star Food — I ordered a Crêpe with condensed milk, and 3 fruits(strawberry, canto loupe, and honey dew) it was delicious. But a bit on the crunchy side I like my Crepes softer. I took it to go and the packaging was really meticulous and when I arrived home the crêpe was still perfect. +1 star Drink — I ordered the coke floatie with vanilla ice cream. DONOT stick your straw into the ice cream the coke will overflow and cause a mess. I learned my lesson! But the employees quickly assisted me +1 star. Coke floatie was $ 4 for a large. Not bad. Overall — Definitely will come back! I was heartbroken when yatyat closed down but now it’s great to have a bubble tea/crêpe place down the block from me. Cheers to late night munchies!
