Bastrop Veterinary Hospital

I really wanted to love this place. The place we normally go is kind of pricey and this place was recommended to us by our neighbor who just said wonderful things about this place. He still loves this place so it may be a matter of what doctor you get.
I’m not exaggerating here and I really truly wanted to like this place and I’ve never written a negative review before because it takes so long but this place was that bad.
Our appointment was the last appointment of the day and we arrived 15 minutes early. We sat in the waiting room for 30 minutes before we were put into a room and then sat in that room another 30 minutes before a technician even came in to see us. So our appointment didn’t begin until 45 minutes after our appointment time.
Not only that but several people came in and out of the room to get things from the room and totally ignored our existence.
The room we were in was dirty. There was BLOOD ON THE FLOOR which means the room obviously wasn’t cleaned before we went it. Meaning that if the animal (s) before us had anything contagious our dog was exposed to that. Then when the technician came back with the doctor, they stopped outside the door and had a conversation. During this conversation one of them was complaining about her pay and how she needed a raise stating «oh you know why!».
What lack of confidence that puts in your customer. Leaving me to wonder if the staff is under paid and not putting their best into their work or if they are just sullen unhappy people that like to complain about anything.
Dr. Christina Behrends came in and we got through the appointment. They took a culture for my cat and gave him a steroid shot thinking he had ringworm or some kind of fungal infection. They took blood and sent if off to be tested for our dog to see if he has the gene preventing him from being eligible for a particular treatment. Once things were all done the two women left the room together. My husband and I got up to leave and the technician looked at us and said «Let me just get this stuff in the computer really quick and then you’ll be set to to go» signaling us that it wasn’t time to leave the room.
By no exaggeration (because we timed it) we sat in that room an additional 35 minutes waiting to be told we could leave. Finally my husband went to the front and they said they had been waiting on us to come up front. So… were they just going to let us sit in there forever!!! Did they not think it was weird that we were just hanging out in the exam room for over a half hour?
The appointment was affordable.
Dr. Christina Behrends said she would call us back the next week with results from the blood test and that it would be about 10 days before the culture from the cat would have results.
TWO WEEKS GO BY WITH NO CALL. I called up there and it took two days for Dr. Christina Behrends to call me back, why could another doctor not have called me? She told me the results over the phone and suggested some medication. I told her that I didn’t want to get the meds from them and that I’d be returning to my normal vet and to please fax over all details to that office. I took them FIVE DAYS of me calling them and reminding them before my vet got the paperwork.
My regular vet said that Dr. Christina Behrends SHOULD NOT HAVE given my cat a steroid shot if they had thought he had a fungal infection until they were sure because it could have made things worse. Three weeks later I got a bill in the mail saying I didn’t pay for medication I NEVER PICKED UP because I told the doctor I didn’t want to work with them anymore.
What a nightmare

I had a 10:30 new client visit. I arrived about ten minutes early to fill out paperwork. The staff was very polite and helpful. They showed my cat lots of love and attention. However; I had to wait for 30 minutes AFTER my scheduled appointment to be place in a room for the appointment.
The clinic is well maintained and neat. Although there were some «piddle» puddles, I did hear them call for a clean up as soon as someone alerted them to the problem.
Once I was in the room, the Vet Tech M was a jerk! I have to say that I have seen better better bedside manners in a rock. He was a bit rude and not very careful with my cat. I had a yearly exam for my cat which was to include a 12 point examination. I only saw the vet (who was middy friendly) do 3 things: take a temp, palpate the abdomen, and check the heart. Nothing else was addressed.
At this point I am going to give them one more try, but if things do not improve I will go elsewhere.

So… I have two small dogs and both of them needed to get their teeth cleaned. I called around in Austin and places were quoting me around $ 400 each! I reached out to Bastrop Vet Hospital and Sarah at the front desk was so nice and helpful. They are super reasonable and I ended up paying half of what I would have paid in Austin. Dr. Cox did an amazing job. I highly recommend :)

I don’t know what has happened in the last year, but this place has gone completely down hill! The front office staff have no customer service what so ever, and do not even bother looking up or greeting you when you come in! I have witnessed this several times, and today will be my last. I will NEVER take any of my animals here again due to the way I have been treated. And it is just not me. They seem to think it is OK to ignore everyone that comes through the door. I have only been to one of the vets, and when he did a fecal exam on my cat, then tells me to give her a wormer «just in case he missed anything», that sends up a big red flag. Does not instill a sense of trust that he knows what he is doing. Now I have to find another Vet.

Wow. I feel truly fortunate to have found this place. I’ve been here five times so far: once with new kittens, twice with a sick cat, once with a very, very, very sick dog, and once with a craaaaaaaazy (hop-​hop-​hop-​run-​around-​in-​circles-​bark-​whine-​nervous) dog.
I’ve seen three of the vets and they’ve all been amazing. They’re gifted in what they do – kind, calm, and have noticed things about the animals that I haven’t. We’ve discussed treatment options in each case and I’ve been very impressed that they’ve often advised to watch the animal and hold back from doing the more expensive tests until it would be clear they were really needed. So, I did watch the animal closely and so far none of the expensive tests have been needed!
By the way, when I went in with the craaaaaaazy dog, I saw a miracle happen right before my eyes. I didn’t get any further than explaining to the vet that the dog was kind of unstable when the dog sat down in front of him, calm-​as-​can-​be and waited sweetly. I couldn’t help but wonder what kind of vibes he was giving off in order to calm her like that!
Oh, and I really appreciate that getting a last minute appointment isn’t impossible (because there’s nothing like having a sick animal when you have no clue what to do).
Finally, Bastrop Vet Hospital is very reasonable in pricing. I’m always fine with paying the bill because I truly think that my animals have gotten care above and beyond what I pay… the three vets that I’ve seen really show they care about what they do.
