The House that Fred Built is a 1930’s vacation rental home located in nostalgic Baraboo, Wisconsin. In walking distance from the historic downtown square, close to the Wisconsin Dells, Devil’s Head Ski Mountain and Devil’s Lake State Park. We offer a vacation accommodation choice that provides the privacy and comfort of home!

History

Established in 2001.

Born and raised in Baraboo and moving as a teenager, I always had dreams of some day again owning a home in the amazing little town where I grew up. With an appreciation for history, architecture and nostalgia the decision to buy this historic home came easily. Built by Fred Terbilcox in 1931, he and his family ran a cab service out of the three car garage in the alley. A wealth of history surrounds Fred’s House and the Terbilcox family, one fun point being that Fred worked for a period as a private driver for the local Ringling family.

After purchasing the house and poking around its nooks and crannies, we found, stuck in the attic rafters, a fascinating charcoal portrait of a man in a black suit. On the back, was written the words Fred Terbilcox.

We couldn’t believe the drawing had preserved so well! Soon it was framed and now hangs in the front entryway to honor the gift of his craftsmanship and the man the home is now named after.

Currently living in Florida, I cherish the changing seasons found up north and visit as often as I can. I was born and raised in Baraboo and keep busy managing The House that Fred Built, writing, doing photography and running a social media marketing business.

I always look forward to the mental reprieve we can count on when visiting our home away from home in Baraboo. We are proud supporters of downtown Baraboo, the Baraboo community and passionate about preserving history, family values and small businesses across the nation.
