Primrose Inn

We stayed at the Primrose Inn for 3 nights during our trip to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. It is conveniently located about a 5 minute walk from town and each room has a dedicated parking space.
I will say that the home itself is rather large and operates more as a hotel than a B&B in my mind. I didn’t have a problem with this its just not what I was accustomed to with smaller Inns. Breakfast each morning offered up a savory or sweet option and luckily my wife and I could mix and match every day.
Due to the popularity of the area and large amount of rooms they certainly churn out guests which results in a very well kept, very updated, and smooth experience. But as I mentioned, if you want more personal attention you may want to look elsewhere.

The perfect amount of hospitality — friendly and helpful, but not too clingy. Lots of thoughtful touches for visitors to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park — Car Tour CD to borrow, free beverages in a fridge, tea and cookies in the afternoon, books and maps, etc. Melissa and Maureen are very pleasant and helpful.
We had Room 1, with a jacuzzi tub, fireplace and private balcony. Outstanding room in size, cleanliness and amenities. Bed was super comfy and we would definitely stay in this room again! We booked on

We recently stayed at the Primrose and it was absolutely wonderful! Our room was beautiful and the staff was helpful and friendly. They served wonderful breakfasts that not only tasted great but were beautifully presented on our plates! In addition, they catered to my gluten free needs and went above and beyond to make sure I also had goodies for the afternoon tea! Great B&B!!!

The Primrose Inn is located a very short walk from downtown Bar Harbor. This quaint, butts well-​appointed establishment seems to be run efficiently by the combination of sweet little old ladies and A few staff members.
Every morning you will be greeted by Melissa, who seems to be the primary manager of the establishment. She will rundown a pair of breakfast options, and deliver your selection freshly prepared. The food is much better than your average diner. This morning, for example, I had the Apple Cinnamon pancakes with a small sausage patty, and fresh maple syrup. Every morning fresh coffee and cold orange juice is available, as well as a fresh pastry.
In the afternoon coffee and a couple of types of baked goods are available for tea time snack. It’s always delicious, and puts you in a great mood ahead of an evening on the town.
Our first night here we stayed in room number 7, which is A nondescript, basic room. It fills what you need with a bed, bath, and smallest flat screen TV. The next evening we moved into the Leffingwell room, which is a very nice upgrade. This room comes with extra space, a king size bed, a jacuzzi tub, and a back porch with a couple of rocking chairs — private to the occupant of the room.
I highly recommend the Primrose in to anybody spending a few days in Bar Harbor.

When traveling my wife and I most often stay at Bed and Breakfasts, so to say this was our best ever experience carries some gravitas. For the uninitiated, use this place as a reference of a great B&B experience at a reasonable price. Trip Advisor has this rated as the top 3^rd B&B in Bar Harbor and, while not having experience the top 2, Primrose is tops in our book.
The staff was very well informed, gracious and exceedingly helpful, ambiance and design were simple and down east elegant, food was fantastic, afternoon tea was delightful.
Very clean with well appointed and modern rooms. AC is whisper quiet, location is very convenient.
Dining room is a tad tough to navigate, small chairs and pedestal tables would help.
After 25 years, my return to Bar Harbor with my bride was simply Maine at its best.

Oh my! A real Bed and Breakfast! We are traveling through Maine and Quebec and are now mad at each other that the so-​called bed and breakfasts we’ve been staying in are not like this.
Just lovely inside and out. Real breakfast in the morning. There are beverages and snacks out. And they serve tea in the afternoon.

This was our first B&B experience, so I don’t have anything to compare it to — but if every B&B is like this — you can consider us converted! I feel like it’s hard for me to be very impressed with hotel, etc. experiences because I’ve stayed in so many since I travel for work… but the Primrose Inn really blew me away from the minute we got there. The employees there are all so warm and friendly, you really feel like you’re staying over at a good friend’s home and being taken care of. We got a tour of the entire place upon check in. From the dining room with tea time (the cookies and cakes are so good!), home cooked breakfast in the morning (I usually hate waking up in the morning, but I jumped out of bed first thing each day just in anticipation of eating their amazing breakfasts), kindles loaded with NYT for reading, DVD library, books, snack bar… this inn was nothing short of amazing. I used to think, looking at pictures, that B&B’s were sometimes creepy looking — like something out of a horror film — but I was so wrong (well, there might be some that are… but Primrose is not one of those!) The rooms were immaculately clean, the mattresses were heavenly, and there was so much space! We borrowed a dvd from their collection every night before bed, it was just so relaxing and quiet. It really was like staying in a good friend’s home… there was nothing the staff there had not thought of to make your stay more comfortable… including a full collection of guide books and maps to the area. They even provide you with an audio tour to play in your car while driving through Acadia! The location of the inn is also perfect — it’s only a 5 minute walk from the main area of downtown and the weather was beautiful when we stayed there, so we walked as much as we could and loved it. The area the inn is located in just makes you feel like you could really get to know the area and people — we akin-​ed it to the old tv show «Gilmore Girls.» I will definitely come back on our next trip up to Bar Harbor and recommend this to friends hands down.

This place is solid, and within walking distance of the restaurants and shops in Bar Harbor. I’m not as over-​the-​moon about it as some other people who left review here, but it is clean and the staff is friendly.
Favorite thing: 4 PM tea time with sweets!
Least favorite thing: breakfast dining room layout (there are no good seats) The chairs and tables are WAY too big for a room this small with this many people. They should have purchased pedestal tables with smaller chairs.
Other bonuses: complementary soft drinks, lots of cool DVDs to watch on a rainy day, nice chairs and ottomans in the room to relax in.

A friend and I went up to BH this August for a fun outdoorsy trip. This is the place to stay! The staff there is extremely friendly and hospitable. We had a great room, well decorated. The AC unit was a little weird, but got it working.
The inn is very close to the shops/​town of BH and we would always walk there every night for food/​shopping. The breakfast was great! They provided a great variety of foods and beverages. They also seemed very accommodating the guests with special needs (there were some vegans there!). They had a lot of great recommendations for places to go/​see. They provided afternoon tea/​coffee/​dessert which was a great thing to tide you over til dinner that night.
Another great thing they provided was books/​movies/​kindles/​hiking guides, etc. It was also great that they provided complimentary water/​soda in a little fridge on the first floor.
If I ever make it back up to BG (Hopefully!), I will stay here again!

My husband and I celebrated our 40^th anniversary with a stay at this lovely inn. I chose the Primrose because of it’s outstanding reviews, apparently earned under the previous owners. The new owner (since April 2012), seems to have maintained all the positives instituted by the previous owners (complimentary GPSs, Kindles, newspapers, tour CDs) and added her own personal touches. The new living and dining room furnishings are lovely, the breakfast and tea offerings were absolutely delicious, and the hospitality and helpfulness, cleanliness and charm outstanding. The WiFi worked perfectly in both the common rooms and the private rooms. The bed was super comfortable and we had a private porch accessible via french doors directly from our room (#8) with two very comfortable rocking chairs. In additional there was a shared porch with bistro tables for enjoying morning coffee, breakfast, or afternoon tea and cake if you didn’t want to sit in the very comfortable dining room. About the ONLY things which could possibly have been improved were:
1) the very small TV in our room — but it was flat screen and had a built-​in DVD player which worked well and
2) the fairly tiny bathroom — but it was very nicely appointed with super-​plush Turkish towels, and there was PLENTY of hot water.
We had a truly delightful visit.

It’s not too often that I write a glowing review of an establishment I’ve visited but, in this instance, the Primrose Inn is well-​worth the five stars.
When my husband and I arrived at the Inn, we were tuckered out from a 4 hour drive. Luckily, we arrived just in time to catch the tail end of «afternoon tea» which included a large pitcher of lemonade, freshly baked chocolate chip cookies and a fresh baked apple tart.
That was just the beginning of our overwhelmingly pleasant experience.
Anticipating every possible need their guests may have had, the owners offered the following:
— GPS systems available for loan to guests with addresses of local restaurants pre-​programmed into them.
— Several Kindles loaded with reading material.
— A large bookcase full of books.
— A wall of current DVDs, organized by recent Oscar winners and «almost winners.»
— Free sodas and pretzels available to guests.
In addition to that, a delicious homemade breakfast was included in the price.
One thing that stood out to me was how sparkling clean the room was, down to the fixtures in the bathroom, tiles, carpet, etc… there was literally no indication that other guests had stayed in the room prior to us! I have been to much pricier hotels that were not as attentive to cleanliness as this inn was so I was impressed.
It truly felt like we were staying at the home of very generous and hospitable friends. Not an experience you would get from a hotel chain.

The couple running this place make a big deal about being Christian, but they treat their help really poorly.
There were two girls from Romania and Bulgaria working there, who weren’t allowed to smoke cigarettes or drink, on their own time, elsewhere (they were of age), plus they had to be in bed at 9PM or they would be sent back to their home countries.
Apart from that, the place is really nice and sparkling clean. Still, I couldn’t stay there again in good conscience knowing they treat their workers like that.

I stayed at the Primrose inn with my husband and mother in law on their last night of the season. She had room 11 and we had the Holland Room. I loved this B&B. I can honestly say it is the best place I have ever stayed. The price was a tad more than we have paid for other places but we all felt it was well worth it.
First off all the place is CLEAN! growing up with a mother who preached (may I even say bible thumped) that cleanliness is next to godliness; this place was immaculate! The owners were very sweet and welcoming. They had very handy binders with the menus of local restaurants listed by rating according to trip advisor. Being food dorks, we had already picked out a restaurant BUT the owner was able to advise us that it had already closed (he had a list of closing dates as well). This was very helpful.
The rooms were soft and comfortable. Ours had a fireplace in the corner (gas, small but nice) and a canopy bed and bubbling tub with a variety of scented oils laid out. The bath robes were awesome. It was quiet and only about 5 minutes from the main drag in Bar Harbor.
Breakfast was delicious and ample and the tea at check in time was perfect for hungry travelers. What can I say… it was worth it! I would love to go back!

My husband and I stayed at the Primrose Inn for our honeymoon in Bar Harbor. They have truly thought of every detail. The breakfasts all included a choice of either a savory or sweet entrée, a baked good, a side dish, and a yummy fruit dessert (the strawberry short cake was my favorite!) along with your typical options of cereal, toast, coffee, oj etc. Complimentary trail mix snacks were available during the day, with pretzels available at night, along with water and sodas. At 4pm they put out cookies and a fresh baked good (the blueberry crumble was fantastic!)
We stayed in the Leffingwell room which had a lovely fireplace and a wonderful bubbly tub with scented oil options. The bed was big and comfortable, and the porch and hammock outside were great. We loved that they provided a great selection of DVDs, and we also made use of the CD car tour of Acadia as well as one of their many hike guides. The menu guides were also very useful!
They were a short walk to the downtown area and also an easy drive to Acadia. It was a wonderful stay, and we hope to return!

This is an outstanding B&B.
I visited here during the Spring time and it was just perfect. The owners go above & beyond to make your stay comfortable. They cook the most DELICIOUS breakfasts (think wild blueberry pancakes!)
There is a lot to do in the area and their gorgeous property is situated perfectly — it’s only a 10 minute walk to downtown Bar Harbor.
Will definitely return!

It’s almost a year after our stay at the Primrose, and I still feel compelled to give it public praise. It is wonderful. Just wonderful.
Great food, gorgeous home, comfortable porch, great location, cozy rooms, and best of all an incredibly thoughtful staff.
We’ll be back.

Our visit to New England was made complete by our stay at this hospitable, comfortable inn nestled in a cozy neighborhood just outside of the main tourist area of town. A 10-​minute walk took us to the heart of town, where the restaurants, shops and other sights awaited.
The breakfast was scrumptious, and included your choice of a savory or sweet main course, plus all of the usual amenities (coffee, fresh fruit, baked goods, hot/​cold cereals etc).
One item that really helped was a CD of a driving tour of Acadia National Park. At the park gate, we popped the CD into the player in the car and it guided us through the whole park, telling us what to look for, when to stop and get out, the history, and so on. It was just like having a personal tour guide with us on our trip!
Thanks to our innkeepers Catherine and Jeff Shaw for making our visit memorable in so many ways! We would definitely stay here again should we visit Maine again!
