Eddies has been a local grocery store chain serving Baltimore City since 1950 in a variety of locations. Eddies of Mount Vernon was established in 1988.

Business Owner

I have had the pleasure of serving Baltimore City citizens for 45 years while managing multiple Eddies store locations. Took over ownership of Eddies of Mount Vernon in 2000. I have been working very hard to change the culture in my store. I support my local community in every way possible as they are crucial to my business. We do our best to create an old time market feel and create a unique shopping experience. Eddies supports local products and local farmers filling our store with as many of these items as possible. Since taking over ownership of this store I have been constantly trying to improve every area of my business to better serve my customers. I am always open for constructive criticism to continue improving our customers’ experience. If we are not meeting your expectations please let us know and we will do our best to meet your needs. Myself and my family thank you for supporting our local small business.

I live about a block away from Eddie’s, and while I prefer doing my grocery runs at larger grocery stores since they offer better prices, Eddie’s is great for when I’m in a bind and need a specific ingredient or random things like batteries or cat food. They also have a decent wine and beer selection and even some hard liquors.
Inside its on the smaller side and the aisles are pretty narrow, but they utilize every inch of space they have. The staff have always been very friendly to me and even walk down the aisles with me to help me find what I’m looking for. There’s also some metered parking out front.

If you advertise closing at 8, please do so. Attempted to enter at 7:50 to find the door locked with plenty of customers inside. My items would have been found in under two minutes. Upon my attempt to enter, an employee on the other side of the locked entrance saw me and turned a shoulder without an, «I’m sorry we’re closing early». Then walked away, great! There’s not many grocery in stores in Mont Vernon and this just makes your overpriced store look even worse. I have no problem taking my money elsewhere if you don’t want mine :)

I’ve only been here three times and I live a block away– a testament to how I am incredibly unimpressed with Eddie’s.
PROS: They have fresh vegetables, fruits, and a great selection of artisanal breads. There’s never long waits at the checkout line. They have a whole area for baked goods and prepared meals for when you’re lazy.
CONS: The sandwich line takes a LONG time. I think it took 45 minutes to get a roast beef sandwich and an egg salad… I could have driven to Giant, bought all the ingredients for those sandwiches, and been back at my apartment in that time!
Some of the prices are really weird and overpriced so make sure you know how much everything is or you might be in for a surprise. I stopped by for a loaf of bread, cheese, meat, and an orange juice and paid almost $ 20. Eek!
SERVICE:
Some of the clerks at the register are really sweet and ask you how your day is going but other clerks couldn’t care less about their job. One guy looked so bored that I thought he was going to fall asleep while ringing me up. Then when I told him I didn’t need a bag, he looked incredibly relieved to not have to bag my items.

Not the best grocery store because there isnt big selection, and the fruit and veggies are not always fresh plus they are expensive. Word of caution: check expiration dates on perishables. Also, looks like they freeze some of the bread/​bagels/​naan so beware of that as well. I find it helpful to check the weekly sales flyer online to see what specials are running. Nonetheless, Eddies is good for convenience if you live in the neighborhood. Another positive is that they carry local produce and support local farms. There really needs to be a large grocery store in this area. I wouldn’t count on Eddies as my go-​to grocery store.

Eddie’s is in a convenient location, but I only use this place if it’s an emergency situation. Most of the products are overpriced and the selection of groceries are HORRIBLE! I recently bought shrimp and a pack of chicken wings. After opening the chicken thighs, I was introduced to a strong smell and the chicken was slimy. The shrimp was spoiled and both needed to be brought back to the store. Never buy chicken or season food from this place. I also got sick from eating turkey meat from the Deli. There are many reasons not to shop at Eddie’s, but if you do, I strongly recommend staying away from the Deli and ALL the meat products in the store. If you’re looking to be greeted by cashiers then you won’t get it here. Some of their employees need to be trained in customer service.

This is Eddie’s paired down to the basics. Just not as good as the Eddie’s in Roland Park or especially the Eddie’s on N. Charles St. (the best Eddie’s). But it will do in a pinch. After all, at least we have a grocery in Mount Vernon, which is more than I can say for most of the vast food desert that is Baltimore City.
It’s a small grocery store, but has a fair amount of produce, baked goods, and prepared foods for its size. They don’t have the full deli menu like at the other stores, but you can order sandwiches at the deli, mostly simple staple items. I’m really upset that they don’t make the egg salad BLT wrap at this location. They also sell beer, I believe. You can’t buy it Sunday mornings though.
They sell a few regional things like Berger cookies, which is nice and you’re in a rush to a party and want to bring something quintessentially «Baltimore.» In that respect they hold on to the essence of Eddie’s, which always excels in regional foods and gifts.
They have sales and discounts fairly frequently, which is rare for a city grocery. I would still rather go to the larger location, but it’s nice to have this option nearby.

I am so excited to be living in a neighborhood with a walkable full service grocery store! Eddies carries everything you need — deli, produce, local goods as well as a discount/​house brand. I was able to get Nati Boh sausages, Little Italy sauce, and $ 1 angel hair pasta. They package up meats in smaller packaging — think two chicken breasts or porkchops — which is perfect for single people or couples. Also a great beer and wine section. It’s not a big brand name supermarket — but that’s not really my style anyway. It’s great to support a local institution and do Euro style grocery shopping.

This review is for the deli/​lunchtime sandwiches only, but the store is in worse shape overall than the deli.
The deli seems to have really gone downhill these last few months. We used to go almost daily for a quick and reasonable sandwich… not so much anymore. The lines are almost always long with the counter staff moving slower than what I thought was possible. Taking the entire order and then repeatedly asking you what you wanted again on top of just moving slow. This leads to anywhere from a 5 to 20 minute wait these days.
The sandwiches themselves went up about 50 cents recently, which puts them in line with most area shops. The only difference is they have started putting less meat and cheese on the sandwiches. In addition, the included «fresh baked» rolls they usually have are increasingly out of stock so you are given a smashed up sub roll that isn’t remotely fresh.
Overall, it’s not a bad sandwich or lunch destination to take back to your desk, but they’re certainly declining these days in quality and service.

This location sure is convenient in Mt. Vernon, but it is not a very nice or clean location (like Roland Park). Several times now we’ve bought produce (to open that night or the next day) and it was rotten or moldy. I’ll use this location for cereal and other boxed food, but will make the trip to Whole Foods for fresh produce in a heartbeat. It would be nice if Eddie’s of Mount Vernon could step it up.

It’s a local grocery store that can hold you over until you decide to make a trip to a larger one.
I’d say that a portion of the goods here are reasonable (non-​perishable), whereas a good portion of the fresh produce are overpriced. Again, you’re paying for convenience.

From what I understand, this place is a local institution that lays claim to one of the more interesting bookmarks in city law. They’ve been around so long that they sell alcohol. That’s right! Those laws restricting grocery stores from selling wine/​beer/​spirits? They are grandfathered into early law with no such restrictions. Nuts, right?
Anyways, the place looks like it hasn’t been refreshed since prohibition either. But it’s a functional market with a deli and decent parking despite being nestled a few blocks away from heavier traffic. Inventory is crammed into this tight space, and they typically have everything I’m looking for. Presentation is lacking, but they thrive on the benefit of being the only real grocery store in the immediate area.
I actually had a deli sandwich, and Italian grinder, and it was pretty darn good! Is it Whole Foods? No. Is it Giant? No. It’s a local place with a little bit of this and a little bit of that, squeezed into a precious commercial location. I liked it and I will be back.

Note, this is an IGA market (independent grocer) not part of the Eddie’s chain. It is a small, old-​fashioned market. I have been shopping here for 20 years. Their deli sandwiches are great as you can tell from the lunch line. Yes, it is more expensive than a big box store — OF COURSE. Yes, the employees stock during the day and the aisles are a bit tight. You just don’t notice the stocking as much at the big box store because of the wide empty aisles. They offer an amazing variety of product, both high-​end and low-​end, considering their square footage and are constantly evolving and amenable to customer suggestions.
Things I love here:
–Boar’s Head
–when their amazing steaks are on special — yes they are expensive but better than what I have gotten at safeway and a more economical treat than going to a restaurant
–their bread selection — it’s like getting it right at the (good!) bakery because they don’t plastic bag it which eliminates the nice crust
–that many times I can get an avocado that’s ready to eat that day and not rock hard (that makes it quesadilla night)
–Zeke’s coffee is cheaper than at the Farmer’s Market
–when Breyer’s is 2/​$ 7, Land’o’Lakes is 2/​$ 5, frozen pizza is 3/​$ 10, you get the picture (they do have sales that you can work your menu around)
I am willing to pay a little more because I can get out and walk, choose exactly what I want to eat that day and not waste time driving. I also like supporting a small business.

I have been using this market since they closed down the fresh &greens market on Charles street which was closer to home. They have pretty much everything you need and at a decent price.
I did notice that the cereal is more expensive than necessary and their bread selection could be better. I was happy with the price of the meat. I purchased a pound of chicken for only $ 2.50 and it was good after freezing it for a week and then cooking it. I am overall happy to have found this place because my next option would be whole foods and they are just too darn expensive!

Downgraded to one star. Why?
I shop here a lot because it’s close… not for any other reason. But more recent experiences have made me decide to only come here in a food emergency.
The first time I saw a cashier eating at the register, I wrote it off as a one-​time thing. The second time, I was a little grossed out watching hands go from greasy potato chips to my foodstuffs.
The third time, the girl bagged my groceries, left the bag sitting on the scanner where it was not easy for me to reach, handed me my receipt, and then proceeded to stuff her pie hole with green licorice and not even bother to hand me my bag.
If I could do zero stars, I would. Seriously, it’s disgusting, gross and unsanitary, and when I worked in a grocery store as my first job, would have gotten me fired.

A bit pricy, but good for staples and the staff are friendly. I pop in for odds and ends and get the rest of my groceries delivered.
And a ps for the folks whining that this Eddie’s isn’t as nice as the «other locations» — it’s a different company. See how helpful it can be to take thirty seconds to ask your checker a simple question? Sheesh.

I have decided to update my review to ONE STAR for one reason: this store is incredibly dishonest with its pricing labels.
The only reason I go here is because they serve Boar’s Head deli meat and because it’s two blocks from where I live. That will change once the deli in my building (The Spot) starts serving Boar’s Head (which hopefully is soon).
I’ve been to the store numerous times and I watch the register. I get the Yoplait Cherry Whips yogurt almost every time I go there, which has a big label of 67 cents. Well 90% of the time the register shows a dollar for each. I’ve never disputed it because I’m not cheap when it comes to food. Today, was the last straw. I went to buy a bag of Dole salad mix that was blatantly marked at one dollar. What did the register say? 3.99! A 400% mark up.
Not only is Eddie’s pricing model extremely dishonest and unethical, it’s probably illegal. I love small businesses (my grandpa owned one in Baltimore once) and I want them to thrive but this place has no integrity. Maybe one day Walmart will decide to set up shop on N. Avenue and then Eddie’s will learn a hard lesson.
I would advise shoppers to go elsewhere.
