After pumping myself full of albuterol for the last several years to no avail, I needed to find a real solution; because, you know, breathing is important to some people.
I walked into Dr. Howland’s office, used what little air I had in my crapsack of a chest to describe my wheezey dilemma and by the end of our appointment, Dr. Howland had found several issues that were previously undiagnosed and paired them with feasible solutions.
For once, my doctor’s visit was more than re-​up on lung bandaids. We’ve got a light at the end of the tunnel, doc!
In sum, there is hope that someday I won’t be glued to my inhaler and I’m grateful to Dr. Howland for that. I lost my mother to asthma earlier this year. Your respiratory health is nothing to taken lightly. You’ll be in good hands with this one, he’s the real deal.

Dr. Howland changed my life. I realize that sounds overly dramatic but I assure you, I am being very sincere!
I moved to Austin from Dallas a few years ago and the cedar immediately caused me to be sick for months on end. My allergies would become so out of control that I was getting constant colds. I would get sick about every 3 weeks and have to use an inhaler 5 – 7 times per day. Nothing I was doing helped. I tried everything: cutting out dairy, cutting out gluten, switching up OTC meds, changing my air filter every month, washing my sheets more frequently… none of it made a difference.
When I finally found a job that offers insurance, I made an appt. with Dr. Howland right away. My visit with him was the single most amazing visit I’ve ever had with any doctor! He spent a good 20 min. talking with me first, explaining details about asthma and how those of us suffering in central Texas can cope with cedar allergies. Then I had a full allergy test done. His staff handled most of this part and they were just as wonderful. Then after my testing, we sat and talked for another 20 – 30 min. about the results.
I am a special case in that the typical nasal sprays (Nasonex, Flonase, etc.) cause a very bad reaction in me. Dr. Howland was extremely thoughtful and careful to prescribe a nasal spray that did not have the same ingredients as those I react to. The spray he prescribed got me through cedar season without a sneeze, sniffle, or wheeze. I could not believe that the entire season basically did not bother me at all!
I cannot recommend Dr. Howland highly enough. I have referred my husband, coworkers, and friends to him. He has truly made living in Austin tolerable. I was so miserable before I saw him that I thought I might actually have to move. I just couldn’t live with being sick for 5 months out of the year. Go see him! You’ll love his personality, too. He’s funny and very down to earth!

You can only go so long with home remedies and OTC drugs before you have to seek professional help for these relentless Austin allergies. I was referred to Dr. Howland from a friend and I had a great experience. Dr. Howland was very professional and extremely knowledgeable with his prognosis. He gave me cost effective ways to manage my allergies without jumping strait to the most expensive procedures. I would recommend Dr. Howland for your allergy needs because of his knowledge, professionalism, and his sense of humor. This is a great clinic.

It became apparent this past year that I needed to take a preventative approach to my allergies/​recurrent sinus infections. So in May, after doing my research on Austin allergists, I chose Dr. Howland. This was by far one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in terms of medical care. I have loved Dr. Howland and his office!
From the very beginning of working with A&A Center, I have had a great patient experience. The office staff were patient with me on the phone as I was asking them about pricing for dr. s visits, testing, serums and shots, etc. Through this, I felt comfortable and aware of how much I might be paying out of pocket. They have a nice reminder system before your apt and also give you a call to confirm an estimated cost based on your insurance (I had scheduled a full skin test).
My first visit was great! Dr. Howland is a really jovial man, often a little goofy even. He affirms your concerns and allows you the chance to ask plenty of questions. I felt like he was letting me take an active role in my treatment. When you become an allergy patient, they have so many helpful educational tools (videos, handouts, folders, diagrams, pamphlets). You can tell they have developed a true and tested method for involving patients in their treatment. I love how organized it all seemed too. I walked away with an arsenal of information and some diagnoses that would begin alleviating my chronic upper respiratory issues.
Since that first visit, I’ve been back twice. Once for a one-​month check up and once for a new virus/​sinus infection. Each time, I’ve felt like Dr. Howland took great care to listen to me and seek solutions. He always seems pleasant and hopeful for recovery, which helps me to feel better, at least mentally.
Another great tool is the nurses line. I’ve had to call multiple times for various reasons when I needed medical advice regarding my medications or if my condition wasn’t improving. You have to prepare yourself for a little phone tag, they don’t usually answer right when you call. But their responses are usually prompt and they relay valuable information from the dr.
I am so happy to have this continuity of my care. The battle against my condition isn’t over yet, but I’m so relieved to have a good doctor I can trust. Highly recommend!

This man saved my life, literally, many years ago. A great allergist, and an even better person. Daughter Dana, now 23 and in the Peace Corps, says «Hello» from El Salvador.

Again, this was from a while ago when I was seeing specialist after specialist trying to determine wtf was wrong with me. As part of that process I went into his office and asked him to test me for every known allergen so I could cross it off my list.
He was so super cool. He told me NO, he would not order a long list of expensive tests for me. Then, he told me WHY he was saying no, and it made sense. (Keep in mind, at this point I was pretty sick and couldn’t remember the last time I’d had a good night sleep (as in years). So the fact that he could reason with a full-​on über sick person is truly quite impressive.
He talked to the intelligent human being that was hiding under all that sickness and said, ‘I don’t think your issue is seasonal allergies because… I DO think you should be tested for a gluten allergy though. I don’t even do that test here, but order this one test instead. It’s $ 99 instead of $ 500 and I think it is what your problem is.“
Huh? I doctor that won’t take my money? Uhm… okay.
And guess what. He was right. I have a damn gluten allergy. (Not the fad preferred diet thing, but the bonafide allergy.) So, for ten years now I’ve avoided gluten and for 10 years now I’ve been infinitely healthier (50 pound lighter too — bonus!).

(Side note: I’ve sent people with actual seasonal allergies to him as well and they’ve been happy when having seasonal allergies treated by him.)

There are many reasons to go to Dr. Howland.
1. His office was very friendly, from the receptionist to the «check out» receptionist. I didn’t feel like a complete idiot or out of place.
2. Dr. Howland spent over 40 minutes with me talking about my allergies. He shared his own experiences and I felt as if he was on my side and we were going to battle the big bad things making my nose feel better. He explained why he was giving me certain medicines and what symptoms they were for. With allergies you sometimes get about 10 medicines and he described why and when I would need them and how to use them. He also provided sheets that repeated his instructions in a very nice little folder. He even showed me how to spray stuff up my nose the right way. He also got me a prescription for a blood test to see if I have celiac disease, just in case.
3. Free stuff. Allergies are tricky. Some things might work better for some people and some might not. Dr. Howland gave me 30 days worth of samples for every medicine he wrote me a prescription for. I have insurance, but at the same time I don’t want to buy six prescriptions that might not work.
I love this man and his practice already.

Who knew there was a doctor out there willing to consultant with the patient? Dr. Howland earns four stars for his quality care and his staff earns the fifth star for working on Saturdays!

We must love Austin, us allergy sufferers! Otherwise we wouldn’t put up with this snot haven we call home. Guess it’s good business tho, for an allergist. I have been seeing Dr Howland for 10+ years and we are very comfortable in our relationship. I see him for asthma tho, and he’s wonderful. The first time I went to him he said, «We are gonna take you off all your pills and put you on these nifty inhalers.» I said, «Riiiight. And you’ll be seeing me in the hospital tomorrow!» Thankfully I was wrong and he was wonderfully right. He even called me himself the next day to check on me.
Dr Howland, like allergies, is truly an Austin icon. He’s a hippiesh guy (dood) that plays in a classic rock cover band when he’s not saving lives.
He’s very easy to talk to and very enthusiastic about seeing me altho I only go once a year now (that’s how under control he’s brought my asthma). He’s offered to do more for my allergies (shots, nasal sprays) but not to the point of annoyance when I refuse. He just goes with the flow (ha, runny nose joke!). Before I met him, I was taking huge amounts of meds that made me jittery and miserable. He really changed my life for the better and was caring yet easy going about it. And now every time I see him, he loads me up with free samples that more than compensate for the copay. He’s the best!
