Voodoo Doughnuts

We LOVE Voodoo Doughnuts! We’re originally from Oregon, so we’ve eaten at the Portland and Eugene locations, and we were thrilled to find this location in Austin! What a treat. We came in late on a Friday night, and were surprised to see what a large shop this is! There are lots of places to sit, and plenty of room for what I’m sure is usually a very long line. That night, though, we were able to walk right up to the counter and place our order. The woman behind the register was very friendly and helpful, chatting with us and making recommendations based on her favorite doughnuts.
We ended up buying a half dozen gorgeous doughnuts, including a peanut butter Oreo doughnut, an apple pie fritter, an old fashioned glazed, a maple bar, and a cake doughnut covered in sprinkles. Each one was DELICIOUS. We stuffed ourselves silly and still we wanted more. The best part was the price – these six gourmet, brilliant doughnuts were only $ 12 after tax! If you’re a doughnut fan, you gotta stop here while you’re in Austin.

I went here when I visited a friend in Austin because I’d heard of it. I got something very chocolatey and peanut buttery, but I still wouldn’t say these are at all the best donuts I’ve had.
I’d say mostly people get hype about it because of the name, but the donuts themselves are really just overly sweet.
I’d give them points for the fact that they gave vegan donuts though.

I had tried Voodoo Donuts before because my work used to bring them in, and I admit they are pretty good. So Sunday morning my girlfriend and I decided to get some. There was a massive line, which was fine. I don’t mind waiting and oh boy did we wait. After an hour (not an exaggeration) we got to the counter and ordered a dozen of assorted donuts that came to $ 22. I handed the guy my card and he said «sorry, cash only.» he then said «there are signs.»
Now, I wasn’t looking for signs so I can’t say with 100% certainty that there were not signs, but while standing in line I did a lot of looking around. I looked at the painting of a musician surrounded by multi colored donuts, and the multi colored gold tipped columns, and the mural of two astronauts riding horses made entirely of duct and masking tape. I looked at the yellow walls, the band equipment, the tables and blinking flat screen tv menus. I even looked at the wildly overpriced $ 18 pink panties in the display case, but one thing I never noticed during all of my looking around were any signs that said «cash only.»
Luckily, there was an atm behind me at the register. As I put my card in and out of the reader in vain, the guy at the register informed me that «it might be broken…»
Well, it was broken and I waited in line for an hour quite literally nothing. So remember, if you’re suddenly struck with a hankering for Voodoo Donuts, get up early, wear comfortable shoes because you’ll be on your feet for a while, and BRING CASH.

My first experience with voodoo donuts was in Denver. The owners of voodoo are very smart in their selection of their locations. The one in Denver was located right next to a weed dispensary. Austin’s location is in the heart of Austin on 6^th street.
My husband dropped me off while he ran around the block so I could get us two donuts. I was happy to see no line but this was probably due to being a Wednesday at 11 – 12.
I was in a hurry so I ordered two donuts quickly. It appears I had ordered the Old Dirty Bastard. This consists of raised yeast donut with chocolate frosting, crushed Oreos, and peanut butter. This was very good and messy. My second donut was the No Name Donut. The No Name donut is raised yeast donut with chocolate frosting, rice crispy, and peanut butter. The donut was yummy and super messy. I do preferred the Old Dirty Bastard donut if I had to chose. Next time I think I will look online (like other Unilocalers suggested) at the menu so I know exactly what I want instead of staring at the display case absentmindedly.

Lines are always long, but it’s a fun treat. I’m not the biggest doughnut fan, but when in Austin — you have to try this place. It’s weird and unique, just like ATX. I like the captain crunch and oreo ones ;)

Great assortment came I when it opened had some crazy named stuff but awesome toppings like the captain my captain which is you guessed it, a captain crunch donut. They also have the maple bacon which is my second favorite rite after the blueberry cake donut! The only thing I dnt like is that they only accept cash so if you only have a card on you your gonna have to hit up an ATM. I dnt really know why but oh we’ll chase has an ATM rite out side luckily or else if you are with another bank expect some down town over priced convenience charges at the other ATMs .
I’m still stumped though I don’t know how to spell. Is it doughnut or donut ???

I was so happy to come back here, it’s been a long time! I hoped it was still everything I remembered… and it was!
The shop is located on the infamous downtown 6^th St in Austin. There is only street parking but if you are in the area you are most likely walking around anyway. The staff is awesome, super friendly and fun to goof around with! The coffee… hot, fresh, and delicious, black coffee always pairs perfect with something sweet! The doughnuts… oh the doughnuts… there are tons of crazy options to choose from as well as the classic doughnut flavors we all grew up with. They also have a nice selection of vegan doughnuts that are absolutely delicious! They are made well and literally the best doughnuts I’ve ever had! The décor is whimsical and fun inside and there’s plenty of seating if you want to stay and eat. They are cash only, if you forget they have an ATM inside that you can use. If you’re in Austin it’s definitely worth the trip for an iconic pink box of Voodoo Doughnuts! The lines can get long, so if you’re indecisive, go online ahead of time to pick out what you want!

Lets call this 2.5 stars.
Came on a recent Saturday afternoon before dinner and got a parking DIRECTLY in front of the door (we call that pornstar parking… much better than rockstar). There is a line to the door, but we have some time to kill so we wait. There is plenty of seating, and although the line is too the door (and steadily so), we (meaning the missus — I hoofed back to the car and listened to some DYNAMITE blues from a couple of doors down) got of there in about 25 minutes.
So the bad news… I have no idea how much the donut (yes we got one) cost… but let’s talk about the pastry.
The missus ordered the CockNBalls (I’m just the reporter, not the namer of this behemoth). It is shaped just as you think it would be, and HEAVY. Lawdamercy! This may seem like a good idea to you, dear reader, but I like my donuts a little on the lighter side (Between Krispy and Dunkin — if you need a scale).
The missus loved the place, the customer service, and her part of the donut (although she also thought it was a lot heavy).
So lets recap — Nice place, nice people, heavy donuts, parking is on the street is dicey at best (the place is in the middle of the block) — I would drop someone off and circle…
I really want to try this place again, but with someone else buying…

This experience was so weird. The employee made a bunch of slightly off color comments. I had no idea how to pick a doughnut or differentiate one from the other. They both tasted kind of old and dry, even though they looked beautiful from the outside. Eh, wont be back.
To be fair– some of these doughnuts were delivered super fresh to a work event– those were stellar– but the ones in the store left me wanting a much better experience.

Finally re-​visited Voodoo, hoping to beat any foot traffic at 8:30pm on a Wednesday night. Still a line but only about 5 people so that’s fine.
15 minutes later, made it to the counter, still no open registers. What is the deal with these guys and their super slow checkout process? It seemed totally unreasonable to wait so long. On the plus side it gave us time to watch the flickering TV menus trying to figure out which donut had what name in the cases.
Got a bacon maple bar and an old dirty bastard. They were good donuts — perfectly cooked, tasty toppings without being super overwhelming, nice low pricing. I think Krispy Kreme could give them a run for their money if they started adding funky toppings and names and shapes, but I still enjoyed.
I HATE that they are cash only. They conveniently have an ATM located right across the register but seriously? Have fun with those fees. Fortunately we were able to dig out $ 5 in change to pay for 2 donuts.
I’d eat the donuts again. I won’t go back to the store personally.

I enjoy the donuts at Voodoo — especially the mango tango (Mango jelly + tang!!!) and the old fashioned/​Sour cream donuts. Super delicious. The service is quite slow, and our server (though incredibly nice!) was a little more into chatting than helping. I’m torn about that — I LOVE friendliness, but I also hate waiting.
Mirroring what other Unilocalers have said, look up the menu beforehand. It can be overwhelming when you come by; donuts aren’t labeled very well (which is true to the stores in Portland, as well), so come with a PLAN!
We went by very late at night, so I’m super excited to come back and try this out, fresh in the morning. The location is amazing if you still hang out on dirty 6^th– a comfortable, airy, sit-​down joint in a sea of «standing room only/​reservation needed» places.

I came here sometime last month and just now doing a review. When I’m in the mood for a doughnut, I am a little boring about it. I won’t try those ones with bacon or cereal, I like chocolate, glazed, cinnamon roll, blueberry doughnut or strawberry filled kinds.
The line for this place was crazy. When finally going to the counter, there is a display of doughnuts that were crazy. Some had cereal on top, bacon pieces, and other word things. But then again, here in Austin they say «keep Austin weird.» So it all makes sense.
We bought half a dozen and i don’t remember the price. Of course more pricey that others since their location was on 6^th street. I didn’t et it that night but I had one the next day. Not bad. I liked it and will go here again if I’m around the area and craving. I def won’t go out of my way but I did enjoy it. Just one of those things that I had to try.

I was torn between 3 or 4 stars. I’d give the creativity and taste 4 stars. The service/​model — 3 stars.
There are lots of fun doughnut options, with cereal toppings, funky flavors and fun names. I thought the yeast doughnuts were comparable to most others.
My main issue is:
Cash only. Sigh.
Practically no description of the many doughnuts, so I could pick a fun named one but only know what’s what if it is blatantly obvious due to toppings.
Service is hit or miss, not everyone seems to know their doughnut info
Fun for the family, often a line, won’t go often.

Oh c’mon, do you really need me to tell you about Voodoo Donuts? This Portland icon now has an Austin storefront on 6^th St next to BD Riley’s, and there’s no way it’s not going to be a smashing success. The more I think about it, this location is brilliant. I’ll bet weekends here at 2:30am will be the best show ever.
If you want to be efficient, pull up their donut menu on your phone & know what you want before it’s your turn. What makes this place excruciatingly slow are the people ahead of you asking, «Which donut is that? Do you really do weddings? Can you explain everything about every single Voodoo donut ever made?» It’s the same people who sample every single flavor at gelato places too. Here’s Voodoo’s donut page, btw:

And finally, if they’re out of a particular donut, ask if the vegan version is readily available. That’s how I got my «Cock-​N-​Balls» right away. If you’re having a good night out with the peeps, whip out an extra buck & the staff will write something clever on a donut for you. You can have fun with that one. Oh c’mon, do you really need a taste & texture comparison of Voodoo’s stuff with every other donut place in town? Well, give me a moment, while they frost «Haha» on my cock-​n-​balls.

Meh. Good for novelty donuts (cyclops! fruit loops! oreo crumbles) but NOT the freshest or most delicious donuts in town by far. The best thing they’ve got going for them is their nice shop space and their pretty pink boxes.
If you see a line, it’s not because they’re so, so popular — I discovered that it’s because they’re pretty slow in serving donuts.
The menu is confusing (rotating info across 4 screens; barely legible). I advise just pointing.
If you’re willing to give up the crazy donut decorations, you’ll be better off getting 1) Mrs. Johnson’s (late-​night alternative), 2) Round Rock Donuts (if you live north), or 3) even HEB donuts (yup).

I’ve yet to eat in, I always order to go and based on that I can only judge them on the donuts themselves. It’s pretty hard to botch a delicious treat when you’re putting these kinds of toppings ‘em. That being said, they’re good but I’ve had better.
Lets face it, they started the crazy donut trend in Portland… but that was a long time ago. And there have been plenty of other places that have a similar schtick that have been in Austin for years. At the end of the day, they’re a solid donut and they get the job done. Would I wait in line? Not a chance? Does there location on dirty sixth deter me from going more often? Absolutely. More power to ‘em for knowing their drunken late night demographic but I wouldn’t say their dough warrants the hype of five years ago.

I’ve been wanting to try their donuts for a long time. Ever since they were featured in the food network and saw a cool couple get married in one of their locations.
I haven’t had the time to go out to Austin but my bf was there for business and grabbed me a box of donuts at 4am.
So you could imagine my surprise when I came home to these insanely adorable donuts.
Taste — Absolutely amazing. I ate my donuts about 7 hours after he bought them. They still tasted so fresh. I had a bite of each donut pictured and my favorite was the one drenched in sprinkles. I swear I was eating a moist birthday cake flavored ice cream hybrid donut. My mouth is getting watery thinking of that amazing donut. It has to be one of my favorites. I called it the unicorn donut because it tasted that magical. :‘D I can’t even. Reilly if you’re reading this… I can’t wait for you to try that donut. :‘D
As far as the other donuts — they were all great I’m just not a huge chocolate fan but me saying they were great saids a lot.
My bf said that the staff were really cool and gave him some free donuts since they were talking about a metal band for a while & he was the only customer. In my eyes anyone who gives a free donut or two are pretty awesome.
I will definitely go visit them for that unicorn sprinkled donut I had.

All and all, it’s a nice addition.
The décor inside seems very modern and upscale.
Nice friendly workers, clean inside, smells fantastic and tons of doughnut choices!
And not just regular choices such as chocolate, vanilla, strawberry ohh no no. This place is much more creative!
They have doughnuts with captain crunch, coco puffs, bubblegum, and marshmallows on them (the list goes on). They even have a maple bacon doughnut!
Doesn’t get any more creative & unique than that!
The other day, after my boyfriend and I found this place on a whim, we decided to purchase four different kinds of doughnuts.
They were all fresh, however, I feel like I have personally tasted better quality doughnuts throughout my life.
Even with that said, it’s a fun place and worth trying out, even if you just stop in to look at all the doughnuts they offer.
OH and a tip for my vegan friends– they have vegan friendly doughnuts as well!

This place was way overhyped. The line was pretty long but it didn’t take too long to get to the front (~15min).
They have a variety of unique donuts from cereal to chocolate covered donuts. I’m not a fan of those so I went with the classic glazed and maple bar. These were fairly large donuts and they are pretty dense so I feel like you definitely get your money’s worth. They were good donuts but ordinary.
I’d probably save my time and go somewhere closer to where I live.

You must go at least once, just for the crazy voodoo donut and cool looking space. If you are craving a late night donut, you can stumble here from the nearby bars and restaurants to get your fix. I really like the spicy Mexican chocolate donut, the others are more novelty than pure deliciousness.
What I don’t like? The line really tests one’s patience! It’s not that they are making your donuts fresh, it’s just everyone in front of you needs to know about every type of donut. You are waiting in line for people to educated about the donuts. I don’t care to have a donut education, I’m just getting my sugar and fat fix.
These donuts don’t hold up the next day, despite what the employees tell you. On Friday close to 10PM I bought 15 donuts for my son’s birthday party Saturday, wrapped them up in multiple layers of plastic wrap. The next day, less than ½ of them were eaten by 15 boys and a few adults! We ended up throwing them away. That should tell you something about the donuts.
