I was craving a refreshing treat at Trailer Tuesday this evening, and I wasn’t disappointed! Well, sort of.(More on that later.) I had Italian ice once and discovered that I was not a fan of the icy texture it imparted while promising the flavor of something creamy and decadent. You can’t fake chocolate with ice! Uncle Louie G here took me by surprise tonight. The texture of its ice was creamy and smooth, lighter than ice cream, and very satisfying! The flavors I got were peanut butter with cookie dough and spumoni. The peanut butter was SO. GOOD. Now, up until college I heavily disliked peanut butter(especially in Reese’s), but since I’ve been on a fitness craze it’s actually grown on me a lot! This flavor was a hit, although I wish there were more cookie dough bites. The spumoni was not as good as the peanut butter. I’ve had amazing spumoni gelato at my favorite Italian restaurant back home in Houston, and this one did not compare. :(From the looks of it, they had heavily swirled chocolate and vanilla, with the flavors of «pistachio» somewhere in there, but it tasted more like almond extract to me. I’d rather see the bright, unnatural, food-colored green of pistachio ice than have unnaturally tasting, invisible pistachio ice! Overall, still an enjoyable experience, and if I ever want to splurge for Italian ice, I’d show up here.

I visited Uncle Louie G’s as part of Austin’s Truck and Trailer food festival, Truck By TruckWest. The signature dish for the food competition was a scoop of any flavor they had. I had the Cantaloupe, My wife had the Honeydew and our friend had the Mango. This has fantastic texture. Smoother than a sorbet, icier than a sherbet. fully and completely satisfying. The flavor of the Cantaloupe was good. Very true to it’s melony roots. Cantaloupe through and through. However, the Mango was a show stopping burst of oh-my-god dream-inducing splendor that you cannot, must not pass up when you go here. Seriously. The Mango was by far the finest example of Italian Ice I have had at any restaurant, regardless of critical acclaim or class and expense. It is for Italian Ice the perfection that a renaissance painting is for fine art. It is worth writing about. It is worth bringing other to experience and enjoy, it is frozen creamy happiness on a visceral, human, emotional level that you simply cannot eat without smiling. It is the promise of summer and sno-cones and sprinklers and happy dogs and bright sunshine on a breezy day. I am told by the chef at Beirut that the Lemon rival, if not surpasses, the Mango as well. I will be returning soon with friends to find out for myself. I recommend Uncle Louie G’s without reservation. It is quite good.

I was at a festival and discovered Uncle Louie G’s ICES trailer last weekend. I have tons of friends and family who rave about ICES that are from New York so when I came across the Uncle Louie G’s trailer I had to give it a try. AMAZING!!! I got the watermelon flavor and had to go back and get another! This Texas heat can get the best of us and once you taste these ICES you’ll be good to go! Look them up on Facebook so you know where they will be! Cheers and happy Summer! Kate
