Tres Amigos

I guess they get one star for existing. This place is awful. Service sucks and the food is deplorable. Had chicken tacos covered in goop and kept finding bone slivers in them. Really gross. I would really be terrified to see the carefully concealed kitchen and staff that produce these atrocities.
Take a drive to Hecho en Mexico and get some edible food.

This is an okay place, although I find the dishes to be a little bland, and have to add flavoring to suit my tastes. I tend to like spicey, though not sweaty-​hot. The wait staff was attentive and covered for each other well. The food came out in about 10 minutes. The salsa was, again, bland for me, but, Lea added salt, and it was more like a mild tomato sauce. Our server was polite throughout, and kept our glasses of tea topped off. Don’t get me wrong. .. I’m not saying that this isn’t an okay place to eat, I’m just saying that I tend to like my Tex Mex a little more in-​your-​face flavorful.

After disappointing experiences at Don Dario’s, I tried Tres Amigos. I had high hopes, still in search of GOOD Mexican food.
I ordered a combo plate which was a chalupa and a beef enchilada. It was spendy for what I actually got. A good portion of the description is a lot of words that I thought would add up to a third element of my combo plate to justify the price, but it was just that nasty, pasty cheese whiz again, slathered on top of a handful of cold chips. What a disappointment!
Basically, I paid $ 12 for a meatless chalupa and a just-​ok beef enchilada. The beef enchilada had roast beef on both ends (which tasted like pot roast), and ground beef in the middle (strange!).
Bottom line, the prices are too high for the quantity and quality of food.

Robert took us in 10 minutes before closing, and was super attentive. Great food and great service. Thank you Robert!

Wow! Really impressed how they took me and my best friend 10 minutes before closing! Coming out of work and we wanted some Mexican food and thought of this place! First timers! Great food and service will come back ;)

Unwrapped my silverware, and nasty crusted on food on my utensil that looked yrs and yrs old and to top it off the waiter didn’t even apologize and was rude about it ps. i put a pic of it on my page.

Tres Amigos has been added to our regular rotation. Whether it’s just the two of us or we bring along a larger posse, we always seem to get seated and served without a long wait. Lots of GF options, and I especially love the Chicken Ranchero.

my sister, mother and I had dinner here last week. it wasn’t pleasant. we’ve been several times and have always liked it. hence the return trips. my mom had received a buy one get one free meal coupon so yay cheap dinner. we got there and while the place was pretty empty, it took forever for someone to take a drink order. and then even longer to ask for queso, which was goopy and tasteless and well terrible. and order. so that was the telling. my sister ordered chicken tacos. seems simple, my mom, her favorite chile rellano and I got my tried and true Pescado Veracruz plate. it’s usually delicious. grilled tilapia and shrimp. with grilled onions and poblano peppers in a light tomatoey sauce. this was just chunks of tomato. which I don’t actually like. I know I’m strange. but I usually like their sauce. the tilapia tasted off. super super fishy. like its about to turn bad. only edible tying was the grilled shrimp. as I’m trying to be polite I look up and realize my mom is shifting her food around. and my sister has just stopped eating. all were unhappy. the super waitress we had didn’t even notice no one ate their food or didn’t care. with the coupon it was still $ 50 of leftovers no one ate. no one was happy. so no more tres amigos. in Austin were Tex next reigns. you gotta step it up and be on point every time

My husband and I shared the shrimp enchiladas and the shrimp fajitas. I understand that shrimp is more costly than other meats, but the portion size was quite small for 18 $ and was not spectacular, but it was still good. Our server Rebecca was outstanding, she was bubbly and extremely nice. 4 stars for the good food and service, but there’s definitely better in Austin.

After a couple visits, I’ve been disappointed at the poor service. Our last time here, we had a bizarre waiter who took forever to take our food order. As he was also covering the patio, he left the door open for long stretches, blowing in cold air at our table. After a long wait for our food, the waiter disappeared. We couldn’t order any more drinks because he was no where to be found.
Food has also been on the decline. I ordered a Chimichanga which was inedible. On another occasion, shredded chicken was as dry as straw. What we used to think was a nice alternative to a Chuy’s is no more.

I found that I really like the food, It was not spicey, My Husband found it too bland, on the other hand I was glad it did not burn my tongue it was perfect for me.
The staff was fast they took our order and with in 10 min we had our food. the Staff was polite and quick to refill our tea. I will go back not sure if my husband will but then again if does not have lots of cumin i. he does not like it.

In a word, mediocre at best. Formulaic, but they lost the formula.
Tamale: rubbery, might have been from a Mexican MRE
Cheese enchilada: contained maybe half a slice of velveeta; overall 2 mm thick
Spanish rice: right color, but bland
Mango Margarita: light enough on alcohol for one to not affect your BAL
Ambiance: Everything you could want from a strip mall restaurant.
Service: Responsive and polite, but it could not overcome the food. Which was not a bargain, either.

First time we have been here in years. It’s convenient when getting your tires serviced. The queso had best in texas so we had to try but it came out very chucky like the cheese didn’t melt enough. The chili sauce on the enchiladas didn’t have any taste to it. Stomach felt very bad right after eating. The food was not good. It made my stomach turn.

Deliciouso– this place has kick butt tex mex food at reasonable prices plus their margaritas are super potent. This is my #1 jam in south Austin– I always get a Rita bowl on da Rox w a tres amigos especial.

Looks like a Chinese buffet place used to be there. Expensive for a pretty terrible ambiance.

First time here, best enchiladas I’ve had in Austin. Staff were friendly and welcoming. I’ll definitely be going back.

Famous Queso is Velvetta. The service was extremely slow for our server only having two tables. Food was good though.

Pleasant Surprise
We stumbled upon Tres Amigos while getting our tire plugged at discount tire. When we first sat down we opened the menus and realized the prices. Everything on the menu is slightly over-​priced. $ 14 for quesadillas seems a little pricey in my opinion. We stayed and ordered two house margaritas, and much to my surprise (I’m a bartender) they were delicious!
For lunch we ordered the tortilla soup, which came out piping hot, and the stuffed avocado. The stuffed avocado was spicy and cheesy and just what I wanted!
Our server, Rebecca, was very friendly and attentive. She made great recommendations, and gets an A+ in my book. We will definitely be back. The only reason Tres Amigos doesn’t recover 5 stars is the prices. Mexican food typically isn’t this expensive.
Overall we enjoyed our experience!

We’ve been coming here for years because of the friendly service, great Mexican martinis and the food. I’m giving it 2 stars only because of the martinis and the puffy tacos now. The rest of our food was, well, tasteless and gross.
The queso was gloppy. Bottom of the pot, orange and thick. The chili sauce for the enchiladas, tamales and burritos had no… and I mean NO… flavor. It was like warm water. Even when we said something to the waiter, he came back and said it was because their customers didn’t want salt. When we said we’d been coming here for years and never experienced tasteless chili sauce, he had no explanation.
Nor did he apologize or remove the charge. Granted I didn’t ask either. But in visits past I wouldn’t have had to.
It’s pretty clear the kitchen staff is cutting corners. I would seriously caution anyone from coming here… and if you do, stick to the Mexican martinis and the puffy tacos. Bring low expectations.

I have been here once before and just walking in once again reminded me why I didn’t like the place. I remembered that the only good thing here was their chips and salsa.
The menu is limited. The wait is ridiculously long and their prices are too expensive to justify the food.
You know it’s been a long time waiting when the waiter has to refill your chips and salsa at least two times before you meal comes out.
I ordered the carne guisada plate that came with rice, beans and guacamole. The carne guisada was still a little tough for my taste. The rice and beans were dried out like if it was sitting there for a long time before everything came out.
Needless to say, I won’t be coming back again.
