Description

Specialties

I am a psychotherapist in private practice here in Austin. I have advanced training in couples therapy as well as the treatment of complex trauma. I also see clients who suffer from anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and various types of addiction.

My approach is relational. I try to be just as engaged and present in the room as I invite my clients to be. Our new understanding of neurobiology suggests that insight is only the first step towards psychological change. We have to practice the desired behavior over and over again in order to learn it. So I work with clients to make meaning out of their pain. If there are different coping strategies to be learned that will help improve a client’s life, then we identify and practice those new behaviors.

I offer a 30-minute free initial consultation to potential new clients so that you will have an opportunity to decide if I am the right therapist for you. Give me a call at (512) 468‑7832 if you’re interested.

History

Established in 2004.

At midlife, I decided that I was tired of working in corporate America. I was making good money, but I was really unhappy. Working in human resources and recruiting was frustrating; I saw a lot of people struggling just like I was, and I wanted to help in a different way. So I decided to go back to school to become licensed as a professional counselor. It’s one of the best decisions that I have ever made.

Joseph Campbell talks about finding your bliss. I believe that I have found my passion because I love the work that I do. Jung calls this passion for life «individuation.» Individuation is achieved by tending to our emotional wounds so that we as individuals can make a difference in the world.

I do my best to create a safe place for my clients to do this deeper emotional work. I’d like to help if I can. Check out my website for more information about me and the work that I do with clients: www.tombolls.com.

Carl Jung said, «Every psychology is a confession.»

I agree with Jung that our own emotional experiences shape us and how we perceive the world around us. How do people change? Hopefully seasoned therapists will have discovered the answer for themselves before they begin their work with clients. How can you help guide another if you haven’t found your own path?

I use my own experiences in therapy to frame my work with my clients. My own experiences in therapy have helped me to become more compassionate and present in my relationships. I’d love to share those gifts with you.
