The Pita Pit

Seriously?! Why do people have to be rude?
I placed an order online, and under cheese options I didn’t see swiss, so I wrote, Swiss cheese on the special order instructions.
An employee called me and was very short. «we don’t have swiss, it’s not on there because its not even an option.» I politely said, sorry I must have read the wrong item, what comes on it? ” She then said «provolone, like what it says» I say ok… provolone it is.
Knowing I read swiss I open the menu back up and here is the description
«Local
Turkey, Bacon, Avocado, Shredded Lettuce, Tomatoes, Sprouts, Cucumbers, Swiss American Cheese & Mayo»
I call back, and politely tell the woman the menu is wrong and I just wanted her to know for any future confusion.
She was so rude, and I could here the «ok dumb ass, no one cares» in her voice.
Customer service means a lot to me, whether I am ordering a pita or 5 star meal.
Thanks for the ‘tude, I’ll buy my pita somewhere else. WITH SWISS!

Now that it is a bit cooler during the day, I have started to venture down to The Pita Pit for lunch. I have to say that it a tasty alternative to the normal sandwich shop.
I’ve had the chicken ceasar wrap both times that I went. I like that you can fill it up with whatever you like. It is quite large by the time I get done filling it up. The staff is friendly and will help guide you through all of the options.
Oh yeah… check-​in before you order… you might get a deal.

It’s no Zankou or Aladdin’s (or even Fadi’s for that matter) but it’s still pretty damn good. Wish they would pop up around my neighborhood/​work. Sucks they charge extra for hummus but it’s totally worth it to pay a little extra for it.

I’ve been to this location several times for lunch, with a pretty consistent experience each time. Most of the employees that I have encountered are very friendly and knowledgeable about their food, and what goes well together. A few times I have added items to my pita at an employee’s suggestion– always to a good end.
While they do have combo specials occasionally, I would visit here more often if it didn’t cost me $ 8 – 9 for a pita and drink.
Tasty, healthy food, but need better pricing options.

Went here for lunch with a couple of co-​workers, one of whom was absolutely entranced with this place. They actually have a pretty good selection of sandwiches, all in a pita. I got the Vegan Delight (though I’m no vegetabletarian), which was tasty. Spread avacado, sprouts, cukes, and (oddly enough) grilled potato chunks.
Overall, it’s fast-​food but better. Fast and healthy. A little work on the interior, and this is 4 stars. Good to try…

Ever notice how you have to ask for the keys to use the bathroom?
And that the bathroom user may return it without washing their hands?
And that the food-​making people then take the keys and continue on making the food?
No? Well, my friend did. After I checked in here on Unilocal and scored her a free cookie.

UPDATE: The owner saw this and left a comment; however, it seems like they aren’t going to change the practice. Yeah, we didn’t see them use the sanitizer when my friend handed over the keys (and we looked for this!) so it”s not taken cared of. Seems like it would be better to just not lock up the bathroom for public health reasons, but I’m sure they’d argue that’s why they keep it locked up. Le sigh.

MMMMMMMMMMMMMMM… I have thought of this place several times since we ate there Sunday… very yum.
Great, fresh ingrediants, and I felt somewhat (somewhat!!) healthy eating them. I got the prime rib, swiss and mushroom pita with lettuce, tomatoes, onions and dijon mustard… ohmy.
Very clean inside, especially at the tail end of SXSW.
Was not feeling the shared male/​female bathroom… Ugh, how many people go in there a day? No thank you please.
Good pices, good service, great food.

What’s the cure for a Sunday at noon hangover… apparently a Pita. Conveniently located right off of 6^th street, this Pita Pit was a small miracle. Walking around 6^th Street while starving and not wanting to spend an outrageous amount of money on a restaurant, my wife and I stumbled across this store. The store was very clean, something that was highly desired have seeing the rest of downtown after SXSW. The food was delicious (highly recommend the crunchy chicken) and you don’t feel like a glutton after a meal.
The service was great, and the staff actually seems to enjoy their job (something you just don’t see very often in this type of establishment).
The only negative I can think of is the shared bathroom. While I had no need to use, my wife refused to use a bathroom that had to be shared by both sexes. I can understand this. She lives with me, and my bathroom habits can leave a bad example for the rest of my sex.

I recently tried the grilled falafal with avocado. Delish! It’s my second favorite thing on the menu now. I am still a big fan of this place. South of the Capitol on Congress is pretty dead on the weekends, so when it comes to finding some lunch/​dinner for those long days at the office, Pita Pit is always there to save the day. I’m giving them the last star I withheld before simply because they are open when other places are not AND because the guys behind the counter seem a lot more helpful than the previous crew. It also doesn’t hurt that they buy their pita bread from the local Phonecia Bakery. I knew I tasted some Austin love in that pita.

Never had any desire to go in (probably because of the unappetizing name), but The Pita Pit had a quick, fresh lunch when I needed it.
I had the buffalo Chicken wrap thingy, and it was pretty tasty. The pita, though not the shape or taste I’d expect at a real Mediterranean place, kept my fingers free of Buffalo sauce and ranch, which was nice. The whole thing was built more like a burrito than, say, shawarma.
In all, a nice alternative to Subway. And a heck of a lot better than the Jimmy John’s around the corner.

AN EMPLOYEE PUT THIS HAND IN THE MAYONNAISE!
As I was waiting for my pita to be prepared right at about 1:05pm today (after already having paid for my meal), I saw an employee, just a few feet from me, who was replacing the mayonnaise, and he cleaned around the edge with HIS BARE FINGER and dropped the mayonnaise into the container. I immediately said «I can’t believe you just did that!» and he said «yeah, sorry, I was about to clean that out». He then proceeded to get a spatula and swipe out a couple of globs of mayonnaise out of the container. When it became clear that was his solution to the tainted mayonnaise, my stomach turned and I immediately left the restaurant, having paid for a pita but not receiving one, and not wanting to even stick around to get a refund.
One can only imagine what happens there when customers are not around?!

I love the buffalo chicken wrap with pineapple. Trust me it works. I use to come here about twice a week for a quick meal in between my bus commute home. The portions are a little small but I guess if I got the chips it would okay.
The music is good. While it’s a chain restaurant this is a local place. It’s open late for the bar hoppers which has saved me a couple of times. It’s even open on the weekend OMG! Pet friendly with outdoor seating for smokers. The restrooms are clean but you have to ask for the key for obvious reasons downtown or they wouldn’t be clean. I’m totally glad it’s the Pita Pit now instead of the Wendy’s that use to be there.

My only qualifier is that we were in the restaurant on a Sunday. Congress Avenue near the Capitol tends to be weird on Sundays anyways as it’s relatively deserted.
The prices aren’t bad, but the ingredients are mediocre and most of the staff seemed to ooze low-​level resentment that customers were there.

Talk about mediocre. I’ll go there if I’m in a pinch and that is saying a lot. I rather just get a smoothie and have that for lunch or go to the extreme of clogging my arteries with fast food.
I had hummus with lettuce and tomato in it and it was just blah. The pita was cold and dry. I know pita was that but they could a least warm it up. I couldn’t even believe I walked that far from my job just for it. Blah!

First off, this is not Greek/​Mediterranean as it’s been categorized on Unilocal.They make a bunch of different sandwiches, all wrapped up in a pita (or served as a salad for your lo-​carb diet). Oh yeah, you can get Falafel, Gyro, Souvlaki and tzatziki sauce, but they can whip up pretty much anything you want on a pita. Avoid the falafel, it sucks.
I eat here at least once a week, usually a vegetarian wrap. The veggies are always fresh and the staff doesn’t skimp on ‘em. Even when the line is a gazillion miles long I’m out the door in a reasonable amount of time.
As far as Austin fast food goes, it’s better than most. Locally owned. LEED certified! Hell yeah!

Pita Pit is a nice alternative to burgers, tacos or a sandwich.
Some great flavors on the menu. You get to pick exactly what veggies you want.
Open to 3AM on the weekends.

So one night during South By, we had like 15 minutes before a show we wanted to see was starting and we were mad hungry. We decided to try the Pita Pit. It looked promising. Lots of slogans and catch phrases in the window. Things like «Fresh Thinking, Healthy Eating.»
They have a pretty substantial menu of breakfast pitas that are served anytime. They even had a separate board for the Breakfast Pitas. That would suggest to a reasonable person that they’re pretty good, right? Wrong!
This thing was full of fake eggs. Bad fake eggs. These were worse than if you took the eggs out of a Burger King Breakfast sammich, threw it in a blender and put it in a pita. I bet you that the powdered eggs that astronauts eat are better than this. My girl complained and the cashier (who was very nice) replaced it with some type of chicken pita. While it wasn’t nearly as bad, it was also pretty lame. The bits of chicken were lukewarm and tasted like gristle. One piece we pulled out was almost entirely fat.
Maybe their vegetarian fare is better than the meat or breakfast pitas but c’mon! It’s not like we went to Church’s Chicken and complained that their coffee wasn’t as good as the coffee at Starbucks. The meat and breakfast pitas are a big part of their menu. Don’t even waste your time with this place.

I love Pita Pit… this particular location isn’t the best ever, but still.
Pluses:
–You can order online
–They are very fast; I’ve never seen it extremely busy (then again, haven’t been there much at peak times)
–Lots of veggies
–You know EXACTLY what’s in it
–Chicken breast pita with honey mustard sauce is my fave
–Perhaps not *quite* as healthy as they make themselves out to be, but decently healthy. They have very detailed nutrition info on the website (you «build a pita» and it calculates everything).
Minus:
The delivery guys DON’T. CARRY. CELLPHONES! What the fuck? One time, the guy stood outside my building randomly (for god knows how long) until someone happened along, saw him, and then knocked on my door to relay the message that my food was here.
The next time I ordered, I wrote in the delivery instructions to please call me when you get here, because I’ll need to come down and let you in. Pita Pit called me as soon as they got the order and said «hey, this is a problem– we aren’t going to have a phone.» So I ended up walking over to pick it up myself!
I mean… I understand why someone might not own a cellphone… but, maybe that means you can’t be a delivery driver. You know? *I* can’t be a delivery driver either because I don’t have a car. That’s just the way it is! Certain equipment is just necessary for that job.

We were on our way to the Paramount when I was suddenly struck by the hunger pangs. 10 minutes until showtime. I hate when this happens: it usually means I have to eat at the first place I see, and I have to scarf down my food in 5 seconds flat. I’ve never had good luck in these situations.
Case in point: the Pita Pit. Their pitas tasted like cardboard sandwiches. If I were homeless, I’d build a house out of their pitas. Now that would be a better use for them than eating them.

The Pita Pita on Guadalupe is right across from UT, which means it is CROWDED if you go right at lunch time. However, if you can go on an off time, their pitas are incredible! I had the chicken and it was amazing, I could scarf it down without the ‘your getting fat as you eat’ guilt.
I had several people with me, and everyone had something different and they all loved theirs! Pita Pit is a winner for a quick meal!
