History
Established in 1991.
Attending UT for graduate school in the fall of 1991, the school started as a Rec Sports club in a gymnasium on campus so that then 3rd degree black belt, Joe Schaefer could continue to train and hone his teaching skills. By the time the Schaefers had completed their education at UT, the number of students had outgrown three part-time facilities until they finally settled at the Rutland school, the perfect location they now call home to Austin Kung Fu and Tai Chi. The Schaefers were then dedicated to a full-time career in kung fu. They added a second south Austin location shortly after that.

Business Owner
The head instructor is Senior Master Joe Schaefer, a 7th degree black belt. Master Schaefer has trained for 30 years and is also a published scientist with a Doctorate in Neuroscience from UT. You will never meet a martial arts teacher that can bring more to his teaching than Master Schaefer brings to the table. His wife, Master Sheryl Schaefer, is a 5th degree black belt with 24 years of training and a Masters in Biology from UT. She co-owns both Austin schools and her presence as one of the highest ranked students & teachers (there are currently only 4 Masters under Senior Master Joe in Texas) is a great example for girls and women of all ages. The Schaefers have two children ages 9 and 15, both of whom have been training since age 4. They believe that everyone grows through training in martial arts. This growth benefits every aspect of their personal and professional lives. This enthusiasm shines through every interaction you’ll experience in their schools.
