Aces Jiu Jitsu Club

I would not recommend coming to Aces. They’ve drafted payments that they weren’t supposed too blaming it on an internal glitch. They’ve continued to charge me even though I cancelled before I ever went in for a class. I’ve been charged for a Gi that I never received. Ty, who is an instructor there has repeatedly said he’s sorry for the issues but yet their processing company is still charging me. I don’t even live in Austin anymore and now they’re trying to send me a bill for over $ 700.
The lack of ethics in this place is shameful and I would absolutely recommend you look elsewhere. I’ve given them plenty of opportunities to contact me but they refuse to respond to phone calls and email. Right now I’ve sent the message I got from Ty about my cancellation to their processing company to show them that these are false charges.
It’s ridiculous how they’ve handled the situation with me, when I feel like they have a moral obligation to correct the problem instead of ignore it and continue to charge someone.
My next step would be to contact my lawyer.

I tend to get bored quickly with various workouts. The standard lifting and treadmill routine was definitely getting old. A friend recommended jiu jitsu and more specifically Aces. At 46, I thought maybe I was too old to start. What grabbed me wasn’t the physical aspect of the workout, but rather the mental aspect. Yes, you get a great workout if you push yourself but it goes way beyond that. Jiu jitsu will challenge every part of you, mind, body and soul. Mental coaching or «self-​talk» is a huge part of the training. Coach Mikal is big on community and that is exactly what he has created at Aces. I not only found a place to release some stress, challenge myself and have fun, but I also made a bunch of good friends. The atmosphere is one of encouragement and camaraderie. I would definitely recommend Aces to anyone looking for a new challenge. Great coaches, great atmosphere and great results.

3 ½ Stars. I recommend attending classes at Aces. Smaller classes during the day. Take pictures of your contract.
Pros:

Cons:
— lack of space during busy times/​classes
— too much emphasis on up-​selling extras
— while you will revisit each technique, there is not enough time to practice one before another is introduced
— not allowed to have a copy of your membership contract; supposedly it cannot leave the club; how is that legal?

My whole family invested in training with aces! Coaches care and mikal has plethora of expertise. Would alway recommend.

I’ve studied various martial arts for a little over 20 years and Aces is probably the best school I’ve ever been to for several reasons. First and foremost is the quality of instruction. Coach Mikal takes time to ensure that his students, both adult and kids, understand techniques and strategies around where and when techniques should be applied. The essence of Jiu Jitsu is that leverage, body mechanics and strategy can be used to overcome force in a confrontation, so for me training should be as mentally challenging as it is physically. Aces will provide that challenge. You’ll get in great shape: stronger and more conditioned physically and sharerp and more aware mentally.
In addition to great instruction, this school has a great sense of community. I really feel like my fellow students and coaches are like a big family. We often get together outside of class. There is a genuine feeling of your fellows here wanting to not only see you become successful in learning Jiu Jitsu but also being successful in other endeavors off the mat. I also have never seen a better martial arts school for kids. My son and the other kids here are serious about learning, and they’re building great life skills in the areas of teamwork, overcoming adversity, building self respect and taking pride in earning their successes.

I’ve been a member of Aces for about 6 months now and it’s been an amazing learning experience. I’ve dabbled in boxing for a while, but have never had any experience in wrestling. If you have the desire to commit to coming, and a desire to learn, you will get it. It’s not easy and it’s not supposed to be. But what it definitely is, is an amazing way to build self confidence, discipline, and a better understanding of MMA and Jiu Jitsu. I would recommend it to anyone serious about learning the art.

Great gym to learn Jiu Jitsu! The instructors are very knowledgeable and have great methods for teaching. Awesome for kids too, teach confidence, morals, and other life skills that will be with them for life.

After signing up for my first class (the first class is free) and learning a few moves I was hooked. It’s always awesome when you can learn practical self defense while getting a great workout at the same time.
Mikal Abdullah is an amazing coach. Not only is he very knowledgeable, but he is also great teacher (coach) and does his best to make all the club members feel like family.
If you have ever been interested in trying Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, you should give this place a shot.

I have found such a profound improvement in my confidence, health, fitness, strength, and overall life that I also enrolled my wife and daughter! We all love it.
I am 5’3″ and prior to training with Coach Mikal and Aces, I had never learned any self defense and always felt inferior on a subconscious level (that’s not fun to write or say) but it is AMAZING to write or say that that is a feeling of the past.
Aces has taught me to embrace competition and live life more completely!
I have also notice my breathing has dramatically changed (I used to be a «mouth breather» and now I train in the club in a way that keeps me strong so that in my day to day life I also notice my breathing is more powerful). Another shift has been in my posture and my gait (walk) to such an extent that my friends and relatives are commenting about it, regularly.
I would have NEVER thought I’d be saying that I’m becoming inspired to compete in a tournament but the sense of camaraderie and family at Aces is lighting a fire that I’m not sure I’ll be able to extinguish (even if I wanted to). I’m inspired to represent my club and take my game to higher and higher levels.
I could go on and on about the amazing transformation that is occurring for me but another thing I’ve learned at Aces is to know when to stop…

Aces Jiu-​Jitsu Club, SETS THE BAR as far as training facilities goes. Mikal is PROFESSIONAL, TECHNICAL, and THOROUGH. Most trainers I’ve been to have neglected the «little man» and focus on their star students, Mikal makes sure every single student is involved. His LOVE and PASSION for Jiu-​Jitsu definitely shows. The amenities they provide: Kids club, Showers, wifi lounge, massage therapy and a Pro-​Shop! How much better can it get?! I can tell I’ll be spending a lot of time here and I am truly excited to call myself a member of the Club!

My two boys, 8 and 12, have been going to Mikal for BJJ a few months now. His style of teaching is nurturing and very positive. I especially like the way he encourages the kids to appreciate the mental as well as the physical aspects of the sport. Helping kids understand WHY a move works lets them think a step or two ahead.
