Pie Slice Bakery

Tried the club sandwich today with ‘limpia rye’ (not sure what is limpia… anyone?). The bread is made in house and is tasty. The sandwich was very good and served with potato chips made at Pie Slice. This is a good locally owned place to patronize. Try it!

The coziness factor of a restaurant plays a major role behind whether or not I choose to make repeat visits. Pie Slice Bakery has a lot going for it on that score. Although it’s now Thanksgiving season and not Christmas I tip my hat to the snowflake lights the proprietors have hanging at the moment. Ditto the winsome oil and acrylic paintings and dangling butterflies. Pamphlets espousing the virtues of buying local are assembled in a far corner. Not that «far» aptly describes it. This joint doesn’t have a whole lot of elbow room. But what they do with the space they have is commendable. I advise them to see to it that the ventilation is better next time. I realize we’re out of the agonizingly hot season but it’s a sad commentary on an eatery when the coolest room in the joint wasn’t the dining room but the bathroom. Thought to myself upon entering «So THIS is where the cool air got to.» Diners need to feel at home in all phases of an eating experience. Low air circulation doesn’t cut it.
Fortunately the food more than makes up for the either absent or poorly routed AC. The raspberry balsamic salad was blissfully generous. Heaps of greens meshed with walnuts, dried cherries, walnut covered goat cheese, onions & tomatoes. If you’ve watched a weather report I’d imagine you know what they mean when they talk about an «overrunning pattern». Usually this means shallow moist air «overruns» the ever notable «dome of surface cool air». I’d describe the walnuts as a prime example of smoky «oomph» overrunning a strong mouth feel of candied sweetness. These walnuts had a likable bite to them. Though the goat cheese wasn’t ample what there was proved divinely smooth. The overall sweetness was elevated by the dried cherries. Overall this salad blends sweet and savory quite well. For $ 2 more you can add grilled chicken as I did. Each strip was delicate. I didn’t have to contend with gristle as I have when dining on some past chicken meals. The salad is immense so prepare to have the stout nature of your appetite strongly tested.
Being this place is called Pie Slice Bakery it would have been blasphemous of me not to try a namesake pie. You won’t be disappointed if you choose the blueberry pie. The slice was a biggun and pretty much devoured upon sight. The citrus zest they use for this recipe is a revelation. Your eyes see blueberries but your mouth senses orange, or even lemon. The crust was sturdy. At a shade under $ 5 it was worth every bite.
The counter girl was thoughtful. I sensed from the softness of her voice she might be a tad socially awkward but, since I have trouble in that arena myself I’m totally sympathetic. She’s certainly friendly which is an asset no matter what package it comes in.
In order for a restaurant to have any shot at a long term future, it must allow its guests to feel at home. Pie Slice Bakery is a quaint nook that maintained my interest level from the get-​go. Alter the airflow to a more inviting level and my repeat business is a given.

Monica O. introduced my roommate and I to Pie Slice Bakery last week. It wasn’t promising, when at 7:15 the door was locked. To be fair, the door did have a sign advertising their hours to be 8AM — 7PM.
Showing mercy on (what I am sure was) out pitiful, disappointed faces, they let us in «for dessert.» Once inside, they said, «If you want to order dinner that will be okay.» Swoon. Marry me.
I ordered the Mac ‘n’ Cheese — complete unremarkable and the New York Style Cheesecake — which blew everyone at the table out of the water. Totally nom-​worthy.
Monica O. ordered the Margarita pizza — probably the best pizza I’ve ever had in a non-​pizza centric restaurant. Her banana cream pie was alright (in the interest of full disclosure, I’m not a fan of creamed anything in a pie tin).
I am definitely coming back to have another slice of that cheesecake.

The 5 stars is for the breakfast tacos alone. I haven’t even tried the pies/​cakes/​etc. yet. Oh my god, good tacos and good salsa.
The iced tea tasted stale and I still went ahead with the full five stars b/​c the tacos are so good.
Best .99 you can spend in the morning!

They have changed the lay out a little bit since I came a few blue moons ago, and now they have a little more seating inside. That gets them another half star.
The lemon meyer cake gets them another half star as I nom-​nom-​ed my cake in about half a second. Who needs to savor?

I had really high hopes for this place. I’m going to sum this up in ‘stars’.
The décor is sadly lacking and the tables are incredibly small. Minus one star.
The girl at the counter really needs a bit more training, me thinks. I ordered a large coffee with room for cream, a muffin and a breakfast taco sans egg. She double checked that I did NOT want egg and I said, yes that’s right, I DO NOT want egg and yeah, the taco came with egg. I then had to remind her about the muffin, which was served cold, straight from the display. The coffee was NOT GOOD and there is no coffee ‘bar’ at which to doctor your coffee. Minus one star.
Country music playing fairly loudly, to the point that the husband and I had to talk above normal tone of voice. Minus one star.

Great Place. The breakfast tacos really surprised me. Be sure to order some queso and try the salsa (very unique/​good). There was none of the fabled coconut cream pie to be tasted when we arrived :(Oh well, Ill order my parents one ;)
The tres leches cake was great. It did not taste like a typical one (which made me like it more). The cupcakes were amazing. They were consistently moist and had a great tasting frosting. The white chocolate strawberry cheesecake was good but had too much of strawberry daiquiri flavor for me (its texture was top notch though).
I am really looking forward to try some pies and pizza next time. There is a bicycle shop next door to help you get rid of the calories… cheers.

Went to this place with a group of about 10 – 12 women and had a wide variety of items to compare too. I ordered the ’04 omelet’ and was very pleased. The migas looked awesome, as did the quiche and the ruben sandwich. Everyone seemed very happy with their order
Now the pies! Wow! Prices seem right down the middle at around $ 5 a slice and the selection was great. I didn’t get a slice, but it seemed to be a toss up between the coconut crème cake and the chocolate raspberry torte. Wow!
A warning, this place is pretty small, but very accomodating. We had pretty much taken over the entire restaurant with our party of 10. Service was great, especially since we had multiple folks arriving at different times.
Also, look out for The Horseshoe Lounge as a landmark. Most of the people in our party drove right by this place and had to circle back around again.
Overall a great experience. A little far from my normal route, but definitely something to keep in mind if I find myself in this part of town hankering for a piece of pie!

Add this to your arsenal of breakfast taco joints in Austin! I’ve only had their tacos so far, but they were freakin’ sweet.
They wrap the tacos, and then cook the taco in a skillet with butter so it’s a little crispy and buttery on the outside. Mmmm! Also, if you order your taco with queso on it for an extra .25, they give you a little bowl of it which is plenty for several other tacos, AND it tastes homemade, not like orange, fake cheese goo (see review on Enchiladas Y Mas).
And to top it all off, they are cheap! $ 1 a taco! Hooray!

Great place. It’s small and clean on the inside — not a place that’s going to be filled or noisy. The food is surprisingly good — I didn’t expect it to be bad but i was thinking it would be average and the pies were what brought people in.
I ordered the Margarita Pizza — no sauce needed as the tomatoes were as flavorful as one could have hoped for.
unfortunately — i was so stuffed from eating an entire pizza — i didnt get a slice of pie (i know, im a moron)
however, i know that if the pies are half as good as the entrée items then this place is worth visiting more than a few times.

I wish I’d brought a change of underwear to work today (if only I had a dime for every time…). If I had known Stephanie was bringing this pie for Ray’s going away potluck, I would have packed a fresh pair with my sausage balls.
When she said she brought Jack Daniels toffee pie, I immediately thought «eh, pass». I am not a whiskey lover nor a really sweet sweets lover. But when she said she got it at Pie Slice, I knew I had to try it for Unilocal’s sake.
Let me describe it for you (read this in phone sex voice):
A thin velvety layer of chocolate mounted on a crispy, flaky crust, mmm. And then? Oh, yeah… and then a buttery toffee flavored filling melting on your tongue ending with (the money shot) a mountain of fresh sweet whip cream. Mmmm-mmmm…That’s eyes-​rolling-​in-​the-​back-​o-​yo-​head good!
Taking away one star cause they really should include a pair of panties with every pie. Pie-​n-​a-​panty. Effin brilliant idea! Actually I’ll bump em to 5 when I get to sample some more flavors. Let the research continue!

I’ve only tried the desserts, but I was VERY impressed. The Tres Leches was the best I’ve had in years and I’m always looking for a good slice of «3 milks». I have to say the same about the Carrot cake, it was the right ratio of carrot, pineapple and raisins. Also tried the Mocha and Pecan pies, and they did not disappoint. We even got a free mini slice of key lime, compliments of the chef, and that passed as well (pretty amazing, as I don’t care for key lime).Can’t wait to go back and try the Blueberry and Banana Cream!
P. S. the slices are HUGE so come hungry.

Can’t go wrong with the breakfast tacos at this place, homemade tortillas with an option of red or green salsa, if you dare you can ask for the HOT salsa. The brownies are perfectly moist, and satisfy that chocolate craving. The tres leches cake wasn’t the best I ever had but was good. Oh, did I mention the migas — delish. Fresh coffee.
The girl and guy that work there are attentive and make sure you have everything you need to grub.

I dropped in this morning because I was thinking I’d like to splurge on a pastry for breakfast. Imagine my surprise when really? There weren’t any pastries to speak of. I did see a smallish chocolate croissant and what looked to be rhueguela (how the hell do you spell that?) but neither was what I was looking for, so I ordered a breakfast taco and a cup of coffee.
The service was wonderful, the lady working the counter was about as sweet as, well, pie. And the pies and cakes looked wonderful. I’m not judging this place on it’s breakfast tacos because, well, they’re a bakery. It was passable, but I wouldn’t order it again.
I’d like to go back and try the pie and cake because that seems to be what they do best. Until then, I give a solid three stars. See you when I have some points to spare on a piece of cake Pie Slice!

I finally made it into the store this weekend with Lisa A. We really could have spent hours deciding and changing our minds on which slice of cake or pie we wanted. I opted for the Strawberry Tiramisu, which was more like strawberry shortcake. I was happy with my decision, because it was really nice and light.
I cracked up at the «mysterious hand» behind the curtain that took the cake to the back for slicing, then the hand would reappear in the window with a plate. Apparently the chefs are a bit shy and like to stay unseen, while they leave the customer service to the sweet girl working the counter.
If you are looking to impress someone for a birthday or other special occasion, I highly recommend picking up a whole cake or pie from here. They really are beautiful looking.

For whatever reason (perhaps it relates to watching the first season of Pushing Daisies on a recent plane flight), I’ve been craving pie in a big bad way lately. Whatever the cause, I’ve been quite ready to dive into a big slice of something, and today I thought it might prove worthwhile to swing by the freshly minted Pie Slice to try a slice or three.
This smallish bakery on South Lamar features a variety of offerings (not just pies. the banana bread streudel muffin — did I read that right? — looked awesome), but the calling card most certainly seems to be the many pies they bake regularly, and I stopped by to pick up a few slices to hatch over the inauguration ceremony. A couple of slices of chocolate (with some sort of cream and coffee thing going on), some coconut cream (which I’d been specifically craving) and, in honor of the changing at the top, a slice of good olé’ American apple.
And as millions watched the swearing in ceremonies, for all their beaming, they couldn’t have been much more pleased than me, with my little slice of goodness, right here at home.

I love pie, and I was very excited to see this shop open near my house, so I went in early one morning just to check it out. I got a blueberry muffin. It was very dry and crumbly, and had very little flavor, so I only ate a few bites and threw the rest away. I was hoping that they hadn’t made it in-​house, and that their pies and cakes would be better. When I went back tonight, though, the very friendly guy behind the counter explained that they make everything on-​site. I had just ordered two pieces of cake, so I was a little upset to learn that they had been wholly responsible for that crappy muffin.
The cakes and pies are not cheap. They are all basically $ 5 per slice. They display only whole pies and cakes, so there’s no way to judge how large a slice is. I have to say, that cake must be precious to them, because the slice was just over an inch thick at its thickest, on the outer edge of icing, and I can tell you that for $ 5 I was expecting a much larger slice. Sadly, the cake was little better than the dull muffin I’d had from them before, and so it didn’t really matter that the slice was small… having more bad cake would not have made me any happier. I had the Meyer lemon cake (or «lemon mayer» as their sign would have it) and my friend got the German chocolate. He didn’t like his any more than I liked mine. To be clear, my specific complaints are:
1. Stale flavor. They display whole cakes in their front case, and they keep the cakes for slicing in a refrigerator behind the counter. When he pulled the cake out of the refrigerator, there was nothing on the cake to protect the cut edge from drying out and/​or picking up flavors – most shops put waxed paper or something against the remaining cake once a slice has been removed. This cake ended up picking up the flavor of the refrigerator, and having one dry edge.
2. Super-​sweet icing. I liked the flavor of the lemon curd that was on top of my lemon cake, although it was a little too gelatinous for my taste. The icing between the layers and on the outside of the cake was a different story. It was sugary sweet, and the outer surface had actually dried out to the point that the sugar had crystallized. The interior icing was still very soft, with a texture similar to raw meringue, but the outside was hard and dry.
3. Portion size. It just bothers me that they don’t display even a single slice of cake or pie, so you have no idea how much you are going to get until they have already cut it. I’d like to go back and give their pie a chance, but are they going to cut me an extremely narrow slice? I would normally cut a pie into 6 or 8 pieces… are they going to cut it into 12 pieces? From the size of their cakes and the size of the slice that I got, I’d guess that they get a minimum of 16 slices out of each cake.
The final bit of bad news was the chocolate chip cookie that they had cut up for samples. One little bite was enough to warn me away from their cookies. It’s sad when a free sample has the opposite of its intended effect.
As I mentioned before, the guy behind the counter was very friendly, and they seem very earnest in their desire to please. I wish them well, and I could see myself being a supporter if only their product were a little better. I will go back sometime and try the pie, and update this review if it’s warranted.
Oh, and they ARE open on Sundays, from 7 am until 2 pm, despite the hours posted above.

I stopped by Pie Slice today with the intention of getting a cake slice, but instead decided on a breakfast taco, a slice of pie, and a cookie. What a treat! I’m a simple gal, so I got a slice of simple apple pie. It was incredible. Tons of apples, but the ratio of crust/​filling was perfect. The chocolate-​chip cookie was also delicious. Crispy, yet still soft. Probably only second to the Alamo Drafthouse homemade cookies.
The breakfast taco was stuffed with food and only 99 cents. And best of all, the tortilla was homemade! Unfortunately, that’s a rarity in the world of Austin breakfast tacos.
For other savory options, they offer a limited selection of pastas, pizzas, salads, and sandwiches in addition to the aforementioned 99 cent breakfast tacos. So there’s plenty to eat if you want a meal followed by a dessert (or, if you are like me, a dessert followed by a meal).

I had to make a Starsky-​worthy maneuver to back out into S. Lamar craziness, but I’ve been known to do worse in the pursuit of pie. (next time I’ll park on the side, not the front.)
Located immediately south of La Feria restaurant on S. Lamar, I’ve been wanting an excuse to stop in and welcome the Pie People to our humble neighborhood. The shop is sunny and welcoming, if not spacious.
For my first foray, I tried a pasta dish with mushrooms, broccoli, red onions and a few other chunky veggies in a thin, but delicious alfredo sauce. Big slices of chicken made it a meal and a half for me.
Next, I felt like I HAD to try a slice of something, so I ordered up the three layer coconut tres leches cake which was as moist as triple milks should make it, without being too soggy. Fortunately, the thick spackle of whipped frosting counterbalanced nicely. But in the end it was too much leche-​ness for me, I’ll probably try something with some crunch to it next time. The muffins, enormous cookies and photo-​worthy whole cakes and pies look like they have been lovingly crafted by folks who know their way around a pastry bag.

Here is why I deserve to get the first review for this place:
A few weeks ago, while driving to work, I spot a new bakery opening around the corner from my house… so I crane my neck to read the sign.
*BAM* *POP* *BAM* *POP*
That is the sound of my car plowing into the curb of the island at Mary and Lamar, popping both my front and rear right tires. 150 bucks.
So, needless to say… I was eager to try this place to see if it lived up to my expectations.
Just popped in from breakfast, and Oh Lordy… it was phenomenal.
I had a bacon and egg breakfast taco (which came with FREE QUESO!) and was warm, fluffy and delicious.
Being the sensible person I am, I also got a blueberry muffin and a cookie (gotta have a balanced breakfast, right) which were freshly baked, cloud like and absolutely scrumptious.
I’ll be back (probably tomorrow) to try some of the awesome cakes and pies they have in the display case.
The family who runs the place were very sweet, and the service was super snappy.
