Omni Austin Hotel at Southpark

Santa brought us a weekend in Austin, TX so we packed up and headed to Omni Southpark.
Upon arrival the exterior looked more run down than what I have come to expect from Omni properties. None the less I went inside to check-​in and the front desk was very pleasant. 4 stars
We ventured up to our room and found an outdated room, particularly versus the other Omni’s I have stayed at previously. Our view of the pool was appreciated by my son.
Next we had to see the pool up close so we set out to try it out. It was OK but had bird feathers floating in it. Not appealing but I guess what you have to deal with when having an indoor/​outdoor pool. I was not a fan but my son was indifferent.
Now back up to the room to shower off. Water took more than 10 minutes to warm up. I shared this with Omni after our stay and nothing was done. Still not happy with that. I have NEVER had this happen at ANY hotel I have stayed at previously, in the US or abroad. And for them not to compensate us after the fact was poor management on their part. This changes my perception of the Omni brand moving forward. BAD move on their part and I won’t forget next time I plan a trip.
The rest of our stay was OK. Water never got much better. Don’t stay on a top floor, maybe it is better on the lower floors.
I would give this 1 star but my family overall had a good time despite the lackluster lodging so Omni gets the benefit this time with 2 stars. Halo effect of other things I guess…

This is a great hotel for families! My son requested a stay at an in-​town hotel for part of his 8^th birthday. The Omni Southpark offers a «Kids’ Sensory Suite» that was great! It has a large room with sitting area and a king bed adjoining to a room with double beds all decked out for kiddos. It had markers, board games, books for various ages, a step stool in the bathroom, and even kid-​sized robes. We had my son (8), daughter (5), and a friend (8) for a one night hotel sleepover that was perfect — swimming, video games, room service, and fun!
In addition to the family-​friendly room, the staff went above and beyond without even a request from us. The kids room was decorated with helium filled balloons and candy, and later they brought up snacks, a little birthday cake, and a card signed by staff. Later, when we ordered dinner, they even sent up complimentary glasses of champagne for the grown ups! Elliott, the young man who helped us with room service and all of these deliveries, was super nice and helpful.
The hotel wasn’t super busy the night we were there, which I’m sure allowed the staff to do extra for us. The pool was very quiet and there was a heated indoor portion perfect for winter kids’ swimming (though cold for me!).
The hotel itself is a little dated and there is highway noise, but any deficits in the location are more than made up for by the excellent staff. I called the hotel directly to book the kids’ suite — when I called the main Omni hotel reservation line, they didn’t seem too familiar with this special offering at this location.

House flooded, so we ended up here for the night. Might as well of stayed home in the flood. Upgraded to the «Premier Room» and paid more than most new downtown rooms. 160 to sleep in a bad 90’s cocaine film. It had 3 patches in the bathroom ceiling (aka mold issue/​what I was trying to avoid) and long black hairs in the bathtub. Fixtures were so old and gross, I was afraid to use the towels that looked like they were made of sandpaper, and the bed had dust. I didn’t dare attempt to find an outlet to plug in my phone. I was afraid to put my hand down somewhere I couldn’t see. I’d rather sleep under 35 then ever step back into this hotel. Burn it down, get the insurance money, and NEVER open another one.

This Omni hotel location was a crappy experience overall. It’s been about a year ago but it was bad enough that I feel compelled to leave this review. The room had a bad smell to it, the bath tub was ghetto with regards to fixtures and moldy tile. The room clearly hasn’t been updated in decades. Could hear everything going on next door. The worst part was that I thought I had gotten a good deal until I got there, what a shitty hotel. I complained to Omni but no one seemed to care, especially since I booked through
, at least it seemed so to me. I won’t ever stay at an Omni hotel again because this shows me how they do business overall, squeezing every penny out of a tired hotel that clearly needs updating. Anyways, there are way better options for the price.

The place definitely needs a renovation but the room was clean and quiet and the bed comfortable so I can’t complain too much. Definitely not a 4 star hotel and a bit overpriced for what you’re getting. Very close to downtown which was definitely a bonus.

Having stayed here years ago before the advent of Unilocal,I decided to stay here again while in Austin on business. Still as peaceful as always. The hotel staff are friendly and hardworking: they responded quickly to a problem I was having with my room door and the service in the restaurant was outstanding. The room was comfortable and had good features, including a mini fridge and coffee maker. The king size bed was relaxing though I did notice that one of the pillowcases was stained red.
My biggest issue was with the other people staying in the hotel. They were pigs. I could hardly use the gym because they were loud and obnoxious while I was trying to have a peaceful workout. I think I saw a hooker on one of the elevators – though it could have been a guest who just dressed very… friendly. Somebody left their pizza boxes in the hallway outside my room. And the worst, was going to the ice machine and finding a bottle of strawberry-​kiwi personal lube sitting just next to the ice maker. Seriously? People who go to stay in nice hotels need to leave their sense of personal entitlement and idiotic behavior at home so that others who are sharing the hotel don’t have to deal with their stupidity.

Disappointing. Wifi in the room wouldn’t work even when updated to premium. Noisiest room I’ve ever been– freeway right outside the window including the 10^th floor — elevated exchange– all night long. They should think about noise reducing curtains (if such a thing exists). No easily accessible outlet to plug in the laptop. Scratchy sheets, bad mattress.
Conference center — standard, with downside of one ladies room with 5 stalls. My conference was healthcare based, so a couple of hundred women-​they ran out of TP after the first break and the suggestion from a hostess in the restaurant was to use the other restroom at the other end of the hotel lobby.
Of the 6 hotel employees I had interactions with 2 were above average, the rest average to below average. Example– standing at the front desk — 2 staff working on one guest’s issue– the other staff person present was staring straight ahead– ignoring me. I had to interrupt his deep thoughts to ask a question.
Too bad

The only reason I give two stars is because of the super awesome bartender. Literally the only saving grace. Facts.
First off, it is dog friendly, which is fine, but it smells like straight up dog and cat. Like the elevator smells like dog urine and so did my room. One of my coworkers was bitten by fleas in another room and they moved him to the only dog free floor. Allegedly the 4^th floor. But who knows. Ugh.
The ambiance was super 1997. Like popcorn ceilings and wallpaper. The tub also kind of grossed me out.
The housekeeping was rare and mediocre. Also… the gym was gross and horrendous and the machines were terrible.
Overall bad experience. Get your life together Omni Southpark.

Clean, quiet and good size room for an affordable price. Really close to downtown and all around town. No trouble parking and free parking. Drinks at the bar are a little pricey and room didn’t have fridge or safe. The room is nice and quiet considering its right next to a freeway. It is clean and well decorated, good views of the Austin skyline if you are in the higher rooms. Pool is a good size with nice little cabana and adorned with fresh clean towels. Even has an inside pool, gym with jacuzzi. Would def stay here again.

Free wifi (if you sign up for their rewards program) and free parking. Our room was nice… the only thing missing is an outlet near the bed to plug in phones.

The staff is courteous but the hotel is a little old. The rooms really could use some updating. The room service was pretty good and the hamburger was reasonably priced. The Gym was in great shape and the indoor/​outdoor pool is nice.

This is my second stay here to watch Texas Relays. This a very comfortable hotel without the excessive cost! It has easy access to the highway & to anything you want to do in Austin! Can’t make any comments about the food, because who would want to eat at a hotel when you are in AUSTIN! Can’t give it a full five stars — there ARE nicer hotels in Austin. But it’s a SOLID four for comfort & affordability! Also, staff is friendly & helpful — they even brought a mini fridge to my room for my yogurt and fruit (don’t have to eat EVERY meal out, you know!)

My family and friends all stayed here when they came into town for my bachelorette party and I stayed one night as well. The rooms were decent. Nice and not too fancy. Priced well for what you get when you compare it to the rest of the city in my opinion.
I spent some time at the hotel bar and had some cocktails while visiting with family. The drinks were tasty and the service was good. I thought the prices on the drinks were a little pricey, but not a huge deal.
Overall this is definitely a good place to stay and I would recommend it to others.

Came by this hotel to check it out for a venue for my wedding reception.
I had exchanged a few emails with Kendall who was very helpful. However, the front desk was a different story. We explained we were there only to check out the ballroom and one of the rooms. We didn’t realize what a terrible inconvenience this was to the staff.
WOW.
The lady let out about 5 huge sighs in a row to let us know of her extreme displeasure and argue back and forth with another lady about who knew about this? and how dare she? why do they have to do this? etc. Wow talk about warm fuzzy welcoming, right?
At this point I wanted to turn and leave, if it was this much of a hassle to turn a lock on 2 different doors… gee?
But for the price I knew I had to see this through. not to mention I live in Round Rock and drove about 45 minutes south on a Sunday just to see the space. I had to! It was very nice, but there was no view. which was #1 on our list of must haves. In hind-​sight I wish I had chosen this locale just for the savings alone but it wasnt where I envisioned us celebrating our day since we would have only ¼ of the ballroom and it felt very tight even if it was only for 75+ people plus dance floor, plus dj, plus cake, plus gift table. nope. too small.
After she showed us the space, she showed us the room and she warmed up a little. To her credit, she showed us the swimming pool area, talked about the airport shuttle. But I just couldnt shake what if they were this rude to our guests?
All our guests were from out-​of-​town! All but maybe 5 people out of 75. I just couldnt risk it. All in all, i liked the rooms to stay in, they had little minibars, very nice. Omni downtown had very nice rooms also, except for the fact the heater didnt work in the dead of winter, you know one of those maslow’s needs on the bottom.

2^nd time staying in this hotel. Parking is free and even though the hotel is okder… the rooms are decent sized and have been updated.
Lobby bar is small but usually has a good crowd.
Each room has a stocked refrigerator but apparently you have to ask for the key when you check in?
Bathrooms are little bigger than average and the water pressure is great. You can priceline rooms here for less than 80 bucks a night which is a steal.
WiFi is free if you have status. Good location and easy to get on highways. Overall a good deal.

Shuttle service is poor and made us wait over an hour. Vehicle is not labelled as a hotel shuttle and does not let you know they are there. Front desk staff asks you to hold every time you call. Lobby has a loud bar in it and can’t hear the front desk. Stained sheets and a hole in the ceiling. The walls have scratches all over the place. We did get a free apple. Thanks OMNI.

The Omni South has become my fall back and go-​to for Austin trips. Hotwire will often have $ 85 — $ 100 per night specials. Seek the only four star offering in the «Austin Airport South» area of the map and you’ll reliably wind up at the Omni South. You will score a just four star or three-​point-​seven-​five star experience for a two star price.
For deal-​mavins, try rolling a four star bid in downtown Austin for $ 100/​night on Priceline. You will be surprised how often you score a sweet stay (the Driscoll, the W, the Hyatt Regency, but NEVER the Four Seasons).
What’s so special about the Omni South?
There is free parking at the Omni South.
One problem with four and five star stays are their often very steep «and then fees» that go along with your room rate. Parking? $ 50/​night. Ouch. I stayed at the Westin Bonneventure in Downtown LA on a screamingly good rate through price line and the «and thens» were MORE than my room rate.
There is a nice pool and hot tub that barely anyone ever uses.
I have steeped in the hot tub there a few times and had the whole place to myself. Very relaxing.
Very conveniently located.
Actually, this hotel is 5 minutes from downtown. You can get anywhere in south Austin and downtown area very quickly. If the dreaded parking lot called I35 is flowing, you can get to north Austin in 15 minutes. The hotel is situated at the crossroads of I35 and 71/​290, so wherever you need to go, there is a highway to speed you along (traffic permitting). Actually managing access to the hotel around the highways can be a pain in the ass. Expect to go past your exit and circle back at least once. A small nit.
Quality rooms and staff.
They are up to scratch here.
Starbucks on premise.
It may seem like a «well, duh,» sort of observation. They brew up a good latte here.
Great city view.
If they have availability for a city view, it is pretty nice.
The value here is very good. Strong recommendation.

Despite recent reviews from disappointed patrons, I decided to take a chance and book a two-​night stay here. I scored a room for $ 95 per night via
. That was less than two-​star hotels in the area, so I was very willing to try this hotel out.
The room is nothing special, but it’s very clean, and doesn’t smell moldy and old. There was no overhead light in our room, just a few lamps — this didn’t bother me, but it is a little dim, so it’s not a great situation if you’re trying to get work done in the evening.
The outdoor pool is big, and I imagine that this is a selling point if you’re traveling with kids. An indoor pool is connected to the outdoor pool, and there is also a sauna and a fitness center with well-​maintained equipment, machines, and a water cooler.
The staff is very courteous and will supply bottled water when you’re on your way out in the morning. They even left us a bottle of champagne and a dessert in our room since we were in Austin celebrating my birthday.
There are no restaurants/​sights within walking distance, but shopping and dining on Congress St. is a short drive away, as are the hiking trails at Barton Springs.

Thank you Omni Southpark! After an extremely disappointing experience at your sister hotel downtown when I ‘named my own price’ last time, I was bummed initially when I saw the Omni brand pop again as my selected hotel this time around…
Did you know I was coming?!? Because, my husband and I have had an exceptional time here at Southpark and your staff have single-​handedly restored our faith in the Omni brand.
Wonderful customer service. I mean top notch. Your check-​in staff was courteous. Management, on this hot-​as-​hell Texas day was handing out Popsicles, in their suits, to the kids by the pool this afternoon. The pool attendant was on it. Constantly replacing towels, cleaning, and taking his job seriously. The valet attendant offered both my husband and I bottled water when we headed out this morning. Housekeeping took good care of us too.
Free parking, awesome pool. The value for what we have received at this hotel has been grrrrreat!
The only two negatives would be, 1. Linens are better at DT Omni and 2. The noise from the I-​35 traffic is overwhelming at times.
I’m really impressed and we’ve enjoyed our stay.

My organization recently held a 3 day conference at the Omni Southpark. I was involved in planning and execution of what could easily be considered the physical manifestation of chaos theory.
Beginning in the planning stages of establishing room schedules, block reservations, menu planning, and IT set up… the staff showed not only a high level of professionalism, but an incredible aptitude for their roles in the process.
Communication was seamless. My professional population has a wide variety of special dietary and other needs. The Omni met every alteration and request gracefully and enthusiastically. During the event, the expected AV, HVAC, and other problems would arise. The staff responded as if they were already in the rooms. They troubleshot and resolved all our needs within minutes. Every member of the Omni staff was friendly, accommodating and attentive to all out needs.
The only ‘complaint’ that I and the participants had was the lack of nearby dining opportunities. Although there are a number of restaurants within the area, none were easily accessed without a car or taxi. Luckily, there is a full service restaurant in the hotel and a number of delivery options. The Omni is a short cab ride downtown and to the airport. Free parking is a HUGE plus for visiting exhibitors and participants.
Thank you Omni staff for helping us herd the kittens and making our event a success. We’ll see you next year!
