At McCormick Vision Source, our Austin, TX optometrist focuses on the «services» part of «vision care services». We make sure that when our patients visit, the environment is relaxed and cheerful, and staffed with skilled eye care professionals who are always available to answer any questions. Our eye doctor has extensive experience, so our patients can feel comfortable placing their vision care in his capable hands. This experience as led to McCormick Vision Source being selected as a teaching facility for multiple optometry schools.

History

Established in 1979.

McCormick Vision is run by brothers John and Michael McCormick. Their father is an optometrist as well so McCormick Vision is truly a family business.

Dr. John McCormick has been in private practice for over 20 years. Dr. McCormick began McCormick Vision Source in 1989 with practices in Northwest Austin and Cedar Park. Since that time, McCormick Vision Source has expanded having had offices in Lampasas, South Austin and in North Austin, which have become the primary offices for several doctors who have interned with Dr. McCormick.

Dr. John McCormick works directly with Dell Laser Center (DLC) and Eye LASIK Austin in the management of LASIK patients. His wife, KJ McCormick is a Certified Ophthalmic Technician. She currently operates as Vision Centers General Manager and Lasik Consultant.

Don’t go here! The doctor and his staff do not care about their clients — only their bottom line. The doctor has an awful bedside manner and is down right rude if you don’t want to empty your wallet at his high prices.
I repeat — they do NOT listen or care about their clients. One visit was enough for me. I found a new ophthalmologist.

These folks saved our situation! It was all by «accident», as we were given wrong info when we called, but they honored the commitment any way, and my daughter got her glasses before school started. They did not have to do what they did, and I wish I could call the gentlemen by name who went way above & beyond. I will be returning, and unlike others, I have no issue with an intern doing my eye exam.
Update: Um, yeah. So, things are not so rosy with an actual exam and getting properly fitting contacts. Three visits later, still don’t have what I need, and they wanted me to come in for a 4th visit. No, thanks. Going back to glasses (which I’ve not worn in 20 yrs). Have to say now I’m nervous about getting those. Will update again.

Always excellent service! They had to fix a hot mess of a situation that another eye doctor put us in, and did it all with smiles on their faces and very calmly. It brought my stress way down! We never should have tried someone new and should have stayed with McCormick. They always take care of us, and we never have any problems. Thank you so much for what you guys do!!!

Pretty good selection of frames. My glasses came back very quickly. The staff was very nice, but the first girl who did the medical interview was kind of rude. She was snippy with me. I told her my meds and she insisted I have diabetes. I told her I’m not diabetic but she ignored me and asked me type 1 or type 2. I said I don’t have diabetes I have slightly high blood sugar. So she wrote down that I’m a type 2 diabetic and I told her I don’t have diabetes. The stare down she gave me hahaha. Then when I saw the optometrist, he said oh you’re a diabetic? I had to explain about the snippy know it all and he crossed off the diabetes on my file but it’s bothered me since. Other than her, it’s a wonderful place and I’m happy with my glasses. I’ll be back for sure.

My family and I have been visiting this place for several years. In the last few years whenever I call to make an appointment and ask for Dr. McCormick, the appointment desk happily sets this up, but I am seen by a different doctor each time. They don’t bother to mention that Dr. McCormick is not available and don’t ask if I am willing to see someone else. It seems dishonest on part of the practice to not make this clear. The doctors have also been different over the years and I have been seen by some young and likely inexperienced ones.
The optometry staff is fairly large and definitely trying to «push their product». Their prices on eyeglasses are exorbitant. if you want to take the eyeglass prescription to take elsewhere, the staff actively discourage it and make it look odd and as if it is a hassle for them to print it out. Last time I visited, i was firm in asking for my prescription, so they finally printed it out. But, guess what, they gave me an incomplete one that just had my «short sighted» prescription; they omitted to give me my ‘reading glass’ prescription, so when I went to Costco to get my glasses done, I didn’t have the complete thing. Normally, I’d think this was an honest mistake, but seeing as the staff is so keen on pushing their expensive frames and glasses it seems certain that these guys are paid on commission and don’t want you to get your glasses elsewhere.
My Costco price without insurance is typically lower than the price I have paid here even after insurance.
On the plus side: if you do get Dr. McCormick, he is great. very thorough and knowledgeable. They also have an extensive selection of frames.
I think I am going to try someplace else next time.

I broke my fancy thin framed glasses and went to these folks.
They were helpful, made me 2 pairs of loaner glasses to use until new glasses came in (I need bifocals, so they made me distance and near glasses).
I like not having to get my eyes dilated.
I bring my daughter here because she was getting very upset at the dilation and this has eased our eye doctor visits.
They have taken the time to fit my glasses, and find me frames that work for my face. I love that they can take pictures of you in different frames so you can see how you look. I never could see how I looked in glasses frames before because I am so nearsighted.
I know they do use students, but I haven’t had any problems with that. The doctor has always come in to review the test results.
Everyone I’ve dealt with has been welcoming and helpful.

First time visit so, not sure what to expect. I had a warm greeting as i walked in the door. I was helped right away to the exam room. Pictures were taken of my eyes. The young lady who did them was very nice and tried to answer all my questions. The examiner was very nice and I felt like he went above and beyond to make me feel comfortable. He answered all my questions to the best of his ability. After reading other reviews I was actually surprised to read that this was a training facility. My experience over all was good but, after knowing that the staff is still in training I see some of the signs of lack of experience. I thought the pricing was fair; I don’t have insurance. I received my glasses the next day on a Saturday. I am questioning the prescription. I have never worn glasses so it might just be I am getting use to them. Over all I like McCormick and I would go back. I just wish I would have known it was a training facility. I felt like I could have be better prepared to ask questions instead of just trusting that they would tell me what I needed to know. Super nice people and hope they continue the good work! FYI… Oh I never saw a doctor which I thought I did. The was kind of a down side. I don’t mind being a test subject just would have like to know.

I got a call exactly a week after I ordered my glasses saying they’d arrived. I went and picked them up a few hours later with absolutely no hassle or wait. The optician was super duper nice. Yay!

Been going here since 2006 and stayed along since. The staff is excellent and the doctors are top-​notch. Well equipped facility with plenty to offer for vision care. Other than their own talent, they recommend great partners for any outpatient needs. The staff are friendly and the doctors highly approachable people.

This place is absolutely amazing. I followed Dr. Wolf to this new location and was pleasantly surprised. The entire office staff is great. They have state of the art equipment but that doesn’t take away from the great care the doctors give you. Dr. Wolf especially is very thorough. You will leave there feeling like he taught you a little bit about eyes :)

I just got back from my eye exam and glasses purchase! Dr. David was wonderful. He was very down to earth and funny. When it came time to pick out my glasses, the whole staff was nice when I insisted on asking everyone what they thought of the glasses I chose before I purchased them :-P
Special shout out to Roland who works the glasses floor and orders the glasses. Due to issues with my insurance company, a situation had come up and I was most displeased. Roland went above and beyond and called the insurance company to clear everything up and even saved me some money!
The whole staff is so nice and efficient. I love this place and am going back for perscription sunglasses soon!

Over the past year, I’ve had a couple of realizations about this practice that have made me think I need to write an update.
Dr. McCormick does seem to employ a rotating staff of interns, so when I make my appointments, I always ask for an appointment with one of the doctors (optometrists). I know that interns need to get experience somewhere, but I don’t want it to be with my (or my kids’) eyes, especially when I’m paying to be seen by an experienced optometrist. Sometimes, they have had temp (substitute) optometrists there as well. I’ve been under the impression that I have an appointment with a particular doctor, and have had to remind the front desk of my preference when they sent in someone else to do the exam.
Another thing that bothers me about this practice is that everyone, even the front desk billing people, seems to be going to school to learn how to do eye exams. So when they start the exam with the machines that test for glaucoma, check your initial prescription, and take the photo for the OptoMap if you request it, you’re not getting the doctor or an intern, it’s one of the techs/​tech trainees in the front. Some are better than others, both technically and in their manner.
Unfortunately, I’m starting to feel like I have to really spell out that I want someone with experience to do my family’s exams. If you feel the same way, you may want to let them know when you make your appointment, and again when you arrive, if things are different than you expected. I do think Dr. McCormick does a good job, and I do like a couple of the techs better than the others.

Great Eye Doctors! Been going to them for four years and love them! Great selection of frames and lenses and turn around time is not long for your new glasses. They work with you, getting samples and trying different brands and powers until you find the best fit for you and your contacts. I love Shane, he is the best and always so friendly and very knowledgable in his field. I am due for my annual next month and am considering lasik. They work closely with Dell and have referred me to them before. This optometrist has this really cool machine that does an interior scan to check on the health of your eyes. Every single one of the staff is friendly and professional and ready to help you!

They are not honest. The thing is they know I have chronic dry eyes. I can’t wear contact lens. Yet they talked me into buying a whole year supply of contact lenses. I know it was my fault to let they persuade me so easily. The salesman was very convincing and I was too easy.
I agreed with Leah Y (one of the reviewers), the female intern they had from Univ of Houston, was short tempered. She was impatient. She also had bad breath.

Man, I went in here for an apt today and the Female Doctor (I will figure out what her name was, she is not on their website yet, but she had a U of Houston smock on…) that was assigned to me was having a BAD day… she was impatient, snappy and altogether rude. It seemed like she was just tired of her job in general and Im kind of pissed I had to endure her wrath. If i ever decided to come back here I am requesting anyone but her… All she could have done to make my experience better was just smile ONCE. seriously? what did I do to you? But btw– The girl who brought me in to do the initial tests had White Chanel eyeglasses and was very friendly, she made small talk which was nice and I appreciated her positive attitude!

After using them for the past two years, I feel I need to share my poor experience here. This is a teaching facility and I seem to have had the bad luck of getting an intern on their first day every time. Or maybe everyone there is so incompetent that it feels like I’m getting a first day intern. I left my last appointment feeling certain I was going blind. They just couldn’t fit me with an accurate prescription and I overheard «macular degeneration» whispered between the Dr. and intern. When I asked if maybe I should see an ophthalmologist, I was told that there was nothing that an ophthalmologist could do that they couldn’t. Um, by definition, I know that is not true. When I DID see an ophthalmologist, it turns out I wasn’t crazy, I was only seeing 20/​40, my eyes had been measured incorrectly and one was over-​prescribed by an ENTIRE power.
They also overcharged me by 50 dollars for the initial visit, but corrected it when I called and complained. The only positive about this place is that the people are nice and were patient when my kid threw a tantrum. I realize future doctors need to learn somewhere, but my vision is too important to be left in the hands of an intern.

After a change in insurance, I had to leave my beloved eye doc and find something new. I chose these guys off the VSP list because they were A) close to my house and B) they could do vision for kids 0 – 3. I wanted to find a place that my daughter, if needed, and I could both go to instead of driving to different places.
There was no wait on my initial visit. They took the time to ask me questions on how I wore my contacts and wanted me to try a new type of contact based on my needs. They had me come back about a week later for a follow up visit to see how they worked. I found the contacts they had me try didn’t quite work with my eyes but they were able to find my old brand in their system and order them for me. They should be delivered to my house early next week. Yippee, no worry about going back by and picking them up!
I took my 18 month old with me on my appointment. Recently, she has become super afraid of doctor’s offices but the staff here was nice and accommodating. Ms. Princess screamed and clutched my neck almost the entire exam. She then dumped her snack all over their carpet. The staff tried their best to distract her and had no issue with running the vacuum after we left. Everyone I spoke with seemed to be a great mood and very interactive with the customers. I liked these guys!

i’ve been going here for years to take care of my glasses/​contacts needs. i went to a store in the mall once and they gave me contacts that irritated my eyes, which i ended up having to wear for an entire year until i was able to change my insurance and make it back to Dr. McCormick again.
the doctors are very nice and gentle, which i appreciate because i feel very vulnerable without any form of corrective eyewear (you have to take contacts out/​glasses off when they do an exam – my eyesight is absolutely horrible).
one really neat thing is their optomap machine. it takes a picture of your eyes instead of having them dilated and walking around feeling like a vampire for the rest of the day. it costs extra but is worth it to me.
you can buy glasses or contacts from them, or just take the prescription to walmart/​mail-​in order, etc.
