Dr Chery Jansen and Associates specialize in comprehensive eye exams, contact lens fittings (including specialty fits), Lasik Pre & Post Op care, medical office visits, diabetic eye care, and diagnosis of other eye disease.

We offer OCT retinal scans as well as Optomap retinal images as part of the comprehensive exam. We have state of the art equipment; however, we haven’t lost that personal touch! The doctors and staff at our office care about our patients, and time and personal attention is given to each patient.

We specialize in RGP, multifocal, and monovision contact lens fittings. We also fit spherical and lenses for astigmatism. We provide a wide selection of daily, 2-​week, and monthly lenes, and we take care to provide options that are best for the patient’s eye health and lifestyle.

Jansen Optical has one of the largest selection of eyeglass frames in Austin! We carry Luxury & Designer lines, value board frames, and everything in between including sport goggles, specialty sunglasses, and safety glasses.

Dr. Cheryl Jansen was born in South Africa. She graduated from Witwatersrand College for Advanced Technical Education in Johannesburg, South Africa where she met her husband, Dr. Terence Jansen, Therapeutic Optometrist. She came to the United States to obtain her Doctor of Optometry degree at the University of Houston.

Dr. Jansen initially worked in the same office as her husband. She has been in private practice for over 30 years. Her husband operates the Texas State Optical at Twin Oaks Shopping Center on Oltorf/​Congress.

Dr. Jansen has a high rate of returning former patients many of whom are friends, associates, and former neighbors. She is currently accepting new patients which she enjoys meeting and establishing a long term relationship.

In her free time, Dr. Jansen loves being a new grandma. She likes to read, garden, knit and sew. She also loves to travel.

My family and I have been going here for at least 10 years now and they are always very professional and everyone there makes each experience great! You can’t go wrong here! I probably can’t count how many glasses and contacts I’ve bought here over the years. The exams are always quick and easy.
I think the technology they have is kind’ve cool as far as the iWellness Retina exam w/​Optomap and Visioffice. The Optomap takes an amazing picture of your eyes and they keep those for comparison over time. This is to early detect diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetes.
Parking has always been easy there. I still go to this location even after moving a little further away than I used to be. Three of us wear glasses in my home so they’re a must for us! Always friendly and quick.

I have been extremely satisfied with Jansen Optical. Their staff is so courteous and pleasant to be around. I had 2 visits with them in a short span of 6 months and both times were very pleasant. I had accidentally thrown out a pair of RGP lenses that take usually 7 – 10 days to receive and needed them for this weekend. I called them moday told them my dilemma and asked if there was anything they can do to rush it? Well from review of 5 stars their staff made it happen and moved mountains, I received my contacts in 3 days… awesome service

They have been taking care of all five members of our family since we moved here from CO. They are patient, friendly and helpful. Recently they helped my daughter transition to contacts and were more supportive and helpful than I could ever expected — making time for her as she struggled at first. I was very impressed and they have won a family of loyal customers.

Dr. Sally Hamissou and her staff are fantastic. I always feels like Dr. Hamissou takes the time to provide you with the best care possible; listening to your questions, and providing knowledgable answers. She really knows her stuff.
I’m a curious person and I probably ask more questions about how the eye works than most folks, but Dr. Hamissou is always great at helping me learn. She even sat down with me and we went through pictures of my retina, me asking questions about the optical nerve, where the light focus, etc.
I couldn’t be happier with their service and I would highly recommend having them as your eye care providers.

Got fitted for contacts and glasses yesterday by Dr. Hamissou and it was the most professional and comprehensive eye exam I ever had. Even when we had to switch between ¾ different pair of contacts and find the best quote with my insurance. She was very patient and thorough with all the tests.
I’ve never had a bad eye exam but the service I got was better than anywhere else I’ve ever been.

Dr Jansen is great! She’s a great eye doctor and very friendly! Her staff is very nice and knowledgeable. We’ve always been taken care of right away and anytime we need an adjustment, we drop in and they fix us up like new. I love that they have convenient Saturday hours too!

In short:
scheduled appointment, arrived 15 mins early, was told they were quiet that day (great, I thought), 1 hour 15 mins later I was seen– good grief! Was rushed through the checkup and told my eyes were great– one is not (the close up world is blurry) and not being a glasses wearer I borrow my wifes reading glasses, so I needed a checkup to get my own prescription. Disappointed in that experience. I use another and I now have reading glasses– very happy

Called last Friday morning to replace my 13 year old’s glasses she dropped in town lake. Asked to pull the 6 month old order and see if I could re-​order. I was told they would call me back. I called back that afternoon and was told they hadn’t had time to do it yet and they would call me back. 7 days later, still no call. School starts in two weeks. I have made other arrangements. Not the customer service I had been used to receiving from Jansen Optical.

I liked Dr. Jansen a lot. She is so sweet and very professional. I loved her. I would see her again and recommend her. The office staff was nice, too.
Annoying, however, that as part of an eye exam, they don’t take a PD measurement. I kind of need that information in order to order a pair of glasses. I called and was told I’d have to come in for a separate appointment and pay a separate co-​pay in order to get that information as it was not «part of a normal eye exam». Really??? That’s ridiculous, and that’s a waste of my time. I don’t see why one extra measurement should require an entirely separate appointment… especially when it’s something that I can try to do at home… you’re going to charge me for an extra appointment? Dumb.

Great place to get your eyeballs tuned up!
Making an appointment with the staff was pretty simple. They did have a spelling mistake on my insurance information which may or may not have been my fault, but that was the only hiccup. I was running five minutes late to my appointment and they still squeezed me in in a timely manner.
I changed contact brands for the first time in 10 years and I like that they are receptive to feedback to help me find the right pair. So far, so good, and I was really impressed with my Opthamologist who had a similar prescription as mine and offered me some really great lasik advice. I never felt rushed and he answered my 3,000 questions with solid, confident answers.
They offered me a free trial pair, solution and a case.
Minus one star because they offer a newfangled fancy retina-​scan type thing which is NOT covered by most insurance companies and I declined. I felt awkward because they were selling it to the hilt and I didn’t want to indulge. $ 35 extra when my insurance is through the roof is a lot of money. They sort of slip the «permission slip» in with your new client info and if you don’t pay attention you’ll sign it. I didn’t, and the girl at the desk made me feel like a bad eye-​ball owner for not participating — but contacts and glasses are expensive enough, I don’t want to be pressured for more than I need, especially given that my eyes have been the same for 12+ years now.

Dr Jansen and her staff are top notch. They have always been friendly and helpful. I’ve been going here for probably the past 4 years now and prior to that I was bouncing around from one eye doc to another for various reasons.
The office is always clean and neat as are the staff in their appearance.
This office is packed with high-​end technology for eye care too. They have a machine called the «Optomap» (I think… lol) that takes a digital picture of your retina! It does cost a bit extra, but the convenience of not having them dilate your eyes and having to wear those silly paper sunglasses is worth it to me. Plus, it’s stored for future reference if the good Dr would ever have reason to compare old with new.
I can’t speak much on the selection of glasses as I’ve only purchased contacts here (stupid VSP). They do have a good selection of trial contacts in store though. Prior to visiting this office, it was common place for me to have to wait several days for the trial pair to arrive at the office (my bad astigmatism limits my lens selection).
So there you have it! It’s a great overall office!

The glasses I got there is GREAT! It was just what I was looking for although it is a bit expensive even with discount and insurance.
Unfortunately my contacts experience there was one of the worst. They gave me the wrong contacts (opposite power) and I had to wait there for 30 minutes wearing that lens. After 30 minutes was when they realized that they gave me the wrong contacts! But worse of all… the contacts they charge are the MOST EXPENSIVE I have ever seen. Beware their over charge!

Still love the frames they have here, but they often don’t tell you if the same frame comes in another color that can be ordered. You have to ask. Also, they have a «no return» policy on frames. I got home and realized the frames weren’t exactly what I wanted (I think I was getting hungry and light headed since I had been looking for an hour) but was told there were no returns.

I take my children here for their yearly exams and eye-​glass fittings. The front desk staff has always been very competent and friendly with me and my children. I especially appreciated Stephanie’s patience as it can take my daughters a very long time to pick out frames. Stephanie is no longer with Dr. Jansen’s office, but I was pleased that Tracie is the office manager now as she has always been very competent, friendly, and efficient. The other staff members were kind, even when I snapped at them for mispronouncing my daughter’s name (sorry, I missed breakfast and blame low-​blood sugar).
Dr. Jansen can at times seem a bit rushed or distracted but she has never been rude or dismissive of my children. She seems genuinely interested in them and I feel that her exams are sufficient. We recently saw her partner, Dr. Prevost, for the first time and she did a great job, too. I was concerned about my daughter’s eye muscle development and Dr. Prevost did a thorough examination and really took time to answer my questions and validate my concerns.
The selection of frames isn’t as varied as I would like. They tend to go heavy on the black, square frames, but I did notice a few colored frames and clear frames in their collection now.
I go to Eclectic Eyewear for my exams and frames as I like their selection a bit better, but I would highly recommend Dr. Cheryl Jansen and her staff for folks in the South Austin area and for children.

I’ve been using Unilocal for a few years, but haven’t felt compelled to write a review until now.
I’m a UT grad student who doesn’t often venture far from the campus area for anything. Lately, however, I’ve been spending a lot of time at my girlfriend’s place down south. While running an errand, I passed by a small strip-​mall office generically marked «Optometry» and thought I would inquire since I’m nearing the end of my current box of contacts.
I’ve been going to Bella Vision for the past couple of years, but after getting a poor prescription from them the last go-​round, I’ve been a free agent. Dr. Jansen is my new vision provider. I could not have been more pleased.
I arrived for my appointment and immediately did the battery of desktop machine eye exams with an extraordinarily nice assistant who really seemed to enjoy working there. After I completed those, I did have to wait for ~10 minutes completely blind (I removed my contacts) for the doctor who was with the patient in front of me. I was told that she was dealing with an eye infection and would be right with me. No problem; I appreciate a doctor who doesn’t rush out a patient who needs care.
Dr. Jansen was fantastic. She managed to get to know me a bit all while performing the eye exam. She corrected my prescription and also noticed a couple things with my eyes that could be important down the road that no one has pointed out before. I felt like I as at a real doctor’s office instead of just a lens distributor.
Can’t really speak to the selection of frames, but it seemed above average for this kind of office.
I would highly recommend Dr. Jansen to my friends and family.

I hate wearing eye-​glasses. I hate it so much that even though I had my first prescriptive pair 10 years ago, I quit wearing them 9 years ago and haven’t had a pair since.
BUT since I have this really excellent insurance right now, I decided I needed to utilize my contribution and get some glasses.
So, I called Jansen Optical as they’re south, and they’re open on Saturday. They didn’t have a Saturday appointment free for 3 weeks. Okay, I’ll take a Thursday at 11:30.
I arrived at 11:15, paperwork in hand, and sat. And sat. Finally called into the room for my vision screening exam. Then I went back to the waiting area as Dr. Jansen was with another patient.
Once she called me back there it was all fine – she’s friendly, the staff are friendly, and they have a great selection.
Why only 3 stars? Two reasons – the length of time I waited the day of my exam, and because someone on the staff called me the Monday after my appointment to verify some information and order my lenses. That’s 2 days AFTER my original appointment – shouldn’t the glasses have been ordered on Friday???
