Iggi’s Texatarian

Still wonderful! The menu’s changed a bit since my last review, but all of the best things are still there. The mac ‘n cheeze is still (and I suspect will always be) the best in town. Even as someone that eats cheese, I love it soooooo much. And the monster PDB&J is still there (yay!). EAT IT, despite your hesitations. I know it’s doesn’t *sound* that great compared to the rest of the menu but, trust me, it’s one of the best things on it. Oo, and make it a point to go when they have their buffalo wings! Battered and deep fried seitan smothered in buffalo sauce and served with vegan ranch dressing. Perfect drunk food!

I feel like an a-​hole for not being ecstatic about this place. I walked away from it feeling like I really blew my food truck load way too early on the funkyfunky Mac n cheeZe (reminded me of garbanzo bean soup I once made that reminded me of nasty baby food) and the BBQ seitan sandwich which was ultimately very unmemorable. I think a more interesting choice of bun could kick if up to the next level.
On another note the girl working there was super sweet and nice and quick and all those good things.

Amazing specials, regular menu items brimming with flavor, very convenient location (for me anyhow) and friendly service…
I’ve had their Chili Mac, regular Mac, Hail Seitan, Chili cheese dog, chips and queso, potato wedges (!), grilled cheese, buffalo wings with ranch (special item, not always available as of this review), and BBQ sandwich and it’s always difficult to pick just one item when I visit. A shame, considering I can only eat about one menu item with their good portions and filling food. Did I mention that everything is vegan? A good friend of mine (who shall remain nameless) famous for nearly the polar opposite to my vegan diet absolutely loves the chili mac. Worth the visit and great to support such a great local small business and feel as if I’m getting the best tasting food I can buy! This goes for all of my other positive trailer reviews with Iggi’s earning it’s admiration among all of the great food in Austin.

The fake buffalo chicken wings are sooooooooo gooooooood way better than the real thing! I also love the cowboi nachos. Iggis is yummy!

The mac and cheese is the reason I can stay vegan.
The food is great, the girls are super awesome and the portions are more than plenty.
I’m always excited every time I see those flashing lights on. It’s clear to me that they really care about making good food and they’re not just in it for the money.
My only complaint is that there aren’t really steady business hours which leads me to often disappointed when I can’t get a fix.

Vegan Yacht was all boarded up at 10 p.m. (weak sauce) so we skedaddled here instead. I’m assuming per the Vegan Yacht reviews, Charlie decided to capitalize on the vegan hipster smucks and set up shop with this very, um, rough and tumble homemade-​feeling food trailer.
The hastily scrawled board boasted of having famously good mac n cheese — so naturally we had to order that. And to Iggi’s credit — it really is some goshdarn scrumptious vegan mac n cheese. Mac n cheese is ever the nostalgic obsession for some vegans, like myself. For $ 3, it was a hefty portion — definitely could be a light meal for me. It was creamy, ever-​so-​slightly cheesy, lightly salted, and of course greatly enhanced by my usual hot sauce addition (heartburn and me, we are like bffs). Omnivores, this is not like your regular mac n cheese, so do approach with an open mind, pretty please? I promise you, it’s delish!
At around 10:30 p.m., they had exhausted of the sandwich breads so per the lovely cashier’s advice, we also loaded up on the Frito Pie and The Rodeo Dog ($ 6 each). And this is where I inform you, I pretty much slipped away into blissful childhood junk food heaven…
The Frito Pie — amazing! I honestly LOATHED those suckers as kid. I am not sure why, the mealy ground beef and oily drippings — huge turn off. The vegan version is so so so much better. Iggi’s version isn’t especially complicated — the minced seitan (or was it TVP?) chili, fritos, onions, jalapenos, and cheese (queso and Daiya). But it was total flavor explosion in my mouth — similar to the stuff of my childhood, but not as «cheap-​tasting» and cruelty-​ridden. I don’t even want to know how many calories I ingested during that short period of junk food bliss, but it worth it.
The Rodeo Dog was similarly oozing with toppings galore and greedily shoved down my gullet like there was no tomorrow.* Hot dogs are one of those things I can’t ever profess a profound love for. I somehow disassociated myself from them early on in my strange childhood (okay, it wasn’t that strange, I just hated all meaty things and would regularly flush them down the toilet — my poor confused parents) after learning what they were made of. I consume vegan hot dogs quite regularly because they’re a fuss-​free immediate source of protein, but I eat them bun-​less, drenched in ketchup and mustard to insulate the weird visceral feelings that flashback to me every now and then. Now this Rodeo Dog literally had EVERYTHING on it. I mean, I guess it would overwhelm the more sophisticated discerning palate — but I personally loved it. Nom nom nom til the end of time. Oh, if you happen to be on a hot date or something, pass on this bad boy, it’s a trainwreck on your face, table, and clothes.
The people of Iggi’s are quite friendly and hipster-​esque. One was fairly scantily clad, not that I mind at all — work it girl!, but I’d be afraid of scalding myself. Then again, I am extremely accident prone. What am I, like 80% scar tissue at this point? Just an educated guess…?
So yeah, I am kind of a fan of Iggi’s. I’ve long been jealous of other
bar-​goers’ ability to sashay over to the sausage/​fajita grill on the patio and procure a delicious fatty little snack during their moments of alcohol-​induced hunger. At Cheer Up Charlies — I can finally partake in this moment too. Woo hoo.
* = I did actually share these items with one other person. I am not THAT gluttonous.

The food here is tasty. Haven’t had anything bad yet. They do seem to have some issues with everything on their menu being available, even though the menu isn’t all that ambitious, but some of that’s to be expected with a trailer.
I also wish they still had tea and lemonade. I realize that they are trying to send business to the bar, but I don’ t think the bar has either tea or lemonade

Holy vegan n mac cheese! Made and served by WICKED HOTTIES. I was a lucky vegan to come eat here.
My vegan dog was loaded with everything from melted Daiya to pickles to other shit in between.
Did I mention the mac n cheese? Yeah. Come get blitzed at Cheer up’s and get full here.

BBQ Seitan Sandwich!
Completely perfect; really impressed my meat eating bf. The most pleasant experience.
Top Notch. As good as it gets.
Not so impressed with the chili cheese dog though… the veggie dog tasted like one you buy in a pack — kinda bland and they didn’t have any mustard or ketchup or kraut, only valentina hot sauce and i’m kind of a freak for condiments so I was a little bummed about that.
Never the less, I find myself riding home from work in the afternoon wishing they were open ²⁴⁄₇ so I can try everything on the menu.
I love you so much Iggi! Hope to see you frequently a Lagunita’s IPA from Cheer Up Charlies and BBQ sauce all over my face.

I use to medicate with food, but now I don’t. So if I start eating something and just can’t stop, it’s not about repressing some inner angst, it’s about eating something that’s just friggin’ fantastic. The vegan chili here is just friggin’ fantastic.
Iggi’s Texatarian is a trailer behind Cheer Up Charlie’s on East 6^th, their goal is «blending traditional Texas culture with progressive dietary choices,» and they’ve nailed it. It’s Southern Comfort Vegan Food. I found myself eating their Frito Pie and wondering, why aren’t these guys on «The Next Great American Restaurant?» Eating one thing from their menu sure makes you want to try everything else.
What’s fun about writing this is I had just come from a gathering at Uchi, and trying to compare and contrast the two places is truly an apple and oranges thing: If you need to impress that short black dress with your suave sophistication about ponzu and the great escolar debate, then Uchi is pretty hard to beat. But if you just happen to hook-​up with some delightful veg-​head with a great smile who likes to laugh, then call me Ishmael, and welcome to the Promised Land.

As a long time vegan I really love vegan junk food. The concept of Iggis is awesome, their location is great, but the food isn’t fantastic. I had the hail seitan and the Mac and cheese. The prices were reasonable enough. I really liked the chili on the hail seitan however, the seitan itself was not very good. As an experienced fat vegan, working with seitan can be difficult. Unfortunately, this particular seitan experience was not very good. The Mac and cheese was ok, nothing spectacular. That being said, I’ll be back but they’ve got some work to do.

Haven’t been blown away but willing to give it another chance.

Hot Tip: CASH ONLY (and the ATM down the street is broken). Chevron at the corner of ³⁵⁄₆^th is your best bet when strapped for paperbacks…
Quaint, friendly service & Super Duper Yummy Food I had the BBQ Seitan sammy… loved the layer of pickles and Ciabatta Roll… good twist– could have used a bit more BBQ sauce, but the texture was swell.
Also tried the Beefaroni (or something like that) — this is truly a meat-​eaters fantasy. I make my veggie chili with lots o veggies, so this was the first truly meat and bean version Ive had– but it was hearty as all get out!
I will most certainly be back… those BBQ nachos looked DELICIOSO!
PS. I really, really want a shirt that reads Texatarian… Kudos!

Yes indeed the mac & cheeze is a must have, along with their deserts which have always been great. This cart has made the Texas flag look good for a change (sorry texas-​priders, I’m not from round these parts), Avoid the corporate and get a good meal at Iggi’s instead y’all.

BEST Mac n Cheeze EVER! Period!
I mean. how do they do it? I have tried making this mac n cheeze a million times at home. but can never match it. Sigh!
Other favorites of mine on the menu (basically everything I have tried) — PB & Jalapeño Jelly, Frito Pie (mmm. the chilli), the dessert of the day (it’s always good!)

This place has ruined homemade mac and cheeze for me in the best way possible. Mac and cheese was my favorite pre-​vegan food, and this was the best vegan mac, hands down. I don’t think my homemade version will ever satisfy the way Iggi’s does.
I had the BBQ Seitan to go with my mac, and it was drippy, tangy, hearty, and glorious. I just wish that I could have made it out one more time before heading out of Austin.

Freaking awesome food! The cart is crazy clean and the service is really nice and knowledgeable. The food freshly made right in front of you.
I am not vegan or vegetarian, but i felt like the sandwich tasted very similar to meat. I really liked it. I felt like the portion was a great value for my money.
I will defiantly recommend this place to my friends and eat there again!

I have visited Iggi’s on several occasions and have ordered all parts of this diverse vegan menu.
On my last visit, I came with several friends and we had a fun time passing our sandwiches around so that we could all have a taste.
I loved the BBQ sandwich, and the Schooch (sorry, I’ve misspelled this!) had homemade vegan provolone cheese and different kinds of veggies and homemade seitain. The BBQ was gooey and messy — just like I like them! My favorite was the Deli Sandwich, which had a savory flavor and lots of crunchy pickles.
If you are feeling gastronomically curious, PLEASE try the peanut butter/​tempeh bacon/​jalepeno jelly sandwich. It’s amazing!
I love you, Iggi’s! Your giant portions are well worth the extra bike ride from my house.

Always on the hunt for new opening trailers, I was ecstatic to discover Iggy’s after it had been opened for just two weeks. I wanted to be the first to Unilocal this business but Tara M. beat me to it as she is always on the move finding the latest and greatest things. That’s why I follow her on Unilocal.
After cupcake smack down 2.0, I was craving salty comfort food and stumbled upon this new trailer in the rod Iron Gate parking lot next to Juan and a Million. The sign read Southern Comfort Vegan Food. Wow, what a novelty. Can their really be such a thing?
Becca is the sweet co-​owner of the trailer and when I mentioned that I wasn’t vegan but was interested in trying their Frito pie or chili cheese dog, she mentioned that their chili cheese dog is their best seller with a side of mac and cheese. Ok, then it looks like that’s what I’m ordering for dinner. She mentioned that the chili is her parent’s recipe and that they win every year at this vegetarian chili cook off. Cool, sounds like I’m in for a real winner then. I should have asked how they make their mac and cheese but felt like ignorance would be better bliss at that moment instead, and take what I was about to eat at face value.
Overall verdict, super impressed! The mac and cheese was incredibly creamy and way better then some of the restaurants I’ve ordered it at. Now I’m really curious as to how they make it. The chili dog was pretty good as well but didn’t realize that the substitute for meat would be a crap ton of beans which I’m not crazy about nor did it settle well in my stomach full of 7 cupcakes. Um, can we say heart burn? But I’m not knocking any stars off of Iggy’s due to my gastric intestinal problems.
Now I just wish I had vegan or vegetarian friends coming from out of town to show this awesome trailer off to.

OK So everyone who knows me nose I am dog gone crazy for black and white Pibbles. So when I heard that Becca and Zoja were combing their skills of cooking and marketing and naming their trailer after their mascot Iggi the black and white Pibble I new I loved them even before the Love At First Bite and Sight!
I went to their Grand Opening Party at the Starving Arts Studio /​Food Court and had a blast — Free Beer and Music and Girls in Bikinis and Dogs on the Slip and Slide!
There are plenty of Vegan Food Trailer Eateries but Iggi’s is the first and most novel that serves Vegan Southern Comfort Food! Where else can a Vegan get a Chili Cheese Dog, Frito Pie, Twinkies, a Good Pop and Topo Chico in one stop?
