Specialties
grayDUCK was founded in 2010 in South Austin, and relocated to East Austin in 2014. In our art-energized neighborhood, we strive to exhibit the work of exceptional artists while creating a welcoming place for everyone: viewers, artists and neighbors. Monthly shows highlight artist’s work from a broad range of experience, both locally and nationally. Our refurbished 100-year old house is a hybrid of new and old, clean lines and comfortable wood. The inviting space with a modern sensibility is a beautiful place for artwork, poetry readings, film, music and performance, a place where art is integral to everyday life.
History
Established in 2010.
At the end of 2013, grayDUCK Gallery off South First St. closed its doors with a promise of a new venue in the spring. On May 2nd, grayDUCK celebrated a grand reopening. Four years ago we opened as an Austin art space, and it was great to commemorate our birthday in the new digs.
Linea Architecture, an Austin based firm, doubled the size of our new location, which was a 1905 residence and quinceañera dress shop. The design retains a sense of layered history (original pine floor and a shiplap covered wall) while pushing the design in a contemporary direction. Changing this century old building to an open modern gallery was a big undertaking. It took longer than expected, but we are so excited with the results. Located in East Austin, the dynamic heart of the city, the space was built with art in mind as well as to accommodate future literary, film and music events.
Meet the Business Owner
Jill S.
Business Owner
Jill studied art and art history at the University of Minnesota with an emphasis in photography. She developed her artwork while pursuing a branding and marketing job, and familiarized with Minneapolis’ flourishing art scene. Collaborations with designers and creatives eventually led to a move to Austin, where after volunteering in the art community Jill opened grayDUCK Gallery to the public in May 2010. She lives and works in East Austin with her partner Mark, their dog Etta Ruth and an ancient bird named Onnie.
