Gary was born in Heidelberg, Germany and moved to the United States when he was very young. Most of his artistic training comes from family and private tutors. Gary got much of his inspiration from his grandfather Gerhard Brauer who was a popular local oil painter in Neustadt, Germany. Gary’s mother also paints in oils and played an important part in Gary’s development as an artist.

Gary takes much of his inspiration from the classic German Portrait artists of the Renaissance, namely Albrecht Dürer and Hans Holbein along with the painters of the Pre-​Raphaelite movement.

History

Established in 1997.

My inspiration for painting stems primarily from nature. I am drawn to it. Every day I notice something new, a bird chirping, a lizard basking in the sun, or some gnarled root that overwhelms my senses and entrances me into a fantasy world of mythical beings. Hidden is an alternate reality with no limitation, an escape from the drone cold world where everything must make sense. I feel compelled to capture the beautiful things that I see and imagine.

Duplicating my visual concepts is not an easy task. I have spent most of my life studying and experimenting with multiple forms of art. My goal is to perfect a means to convey not only visually but emotionally the depth of my visions.

Most important to me is not photo accuracy or dramatic form but the overwhelming impression that what you are looking at could be real. With a combination of texture, detail and oil wash, I feel that I have come close to a solution.
