History

Established in 1952.

The Austin Diagnostic Clinic (ADC) is the realization of the dream of Dr. Henry Renfert. He wanted to build a «junior-size» Mayo Clinic — the first of its kind in the Austin area. After completing his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan, he moved to Austin in 1952 and opened his practice. Until the 1980s Internal Medicine and its subspecialties were the mainstay of ADC.

ADC was the first clinic in Austin to have available in-house diagnostic radiology and a clinical laboratory.

We were the first to offer nuclear scanning, outpatient stress testing, echocardiography, and 24-hour cardiac monitoring.

Our doctors staffed the first intensive care unit and performed the first heart catheterization in Central Texas.

Austin’s first specialty-trained invasive Cardiologist, Nephrologist, Endocrinologist, Rheumatologist and Pulmonary Disease specialists were ADC doctors.

–2 stars for not knowing their prices upfront (scary)
–1 star for a 25 minute call that should’ve lasted 5.
Just called this morning to get a rate for my 3 toddlers to be allergy tested. (I feel it’s pretty normal to call around & get quotes on pricing since we are both self employed & pay for healthcare out of pocket, it can add up.)
Everyone who picked up the phone was nice, but unlike other doctor I’ve called, I had to be transferred 4x to different departments because nobody knew what their prices were? Huh? (Is this AT&T or an allergy clinic?)
I finally spoke with the sweet woman in billing, but she asked me for the codes I needed pricing for & said she would have to send in to ANOTHER dept. for pricing & wait for a response. Umm codes? No idea because I don’t work here. She then said she could give me a POSSIBLE estimate for office visit. No offense to her, that is probably what is she required to say, but that sounded scary, which was probably the underlying message for saying for «you’ll be charged a lot more.»
I just need the cost of a simple allergy prick & visit just like every other office has given me. This whole 25 minute phone call was very unorganized and not where I plan on setting up an appt. I’ll sadly have to stick to the smaller guys who know their prices.

The billing system is a nightmare. You cannot make heads or tails of what invoice your most recent payment went to. The customer service people are friendly and helpful but i think they are just as confused and don’t understand the billing cycles. Its 2016 and i’m still getting fees from middle of 2015? CSR told me my insurance is submitting this but come on… a whole year for a rapid strep test bill? Plus I was told I have a series of other bill coming in the next week. Im getting tired of the shady billing cycles and convoluted answers. ADC get your billing department on track because my family and I are about to leave.

I don’t understand all the negative reviews. I am headed to Africa in a month and had to get my travel shots. The travel department was super helpful in helping me to understand where I was going, types of shots I was getting, geographic area, medication, etc. Their cost was much cheaper than Passport Health. I recommend everyone coming here if they need shots before traveling.
*** Once you get into the medical building, they are located on the 2^nd floor (South Wing).

DO NOT USE THIS CLINIC OR ANY OF THE ADC LOCATIONS! Their billing system is defunct and you run the risk of having your account sent to collections if you are not careful!
I have been making payments to my account since August and recently went online and established a recurring payment to be deducted from my debit card. I called in today to discuss the status of my account and was informed by the ADC billing rep that my recurring payment plan was not «approved verbally by a manager» and therefore, my account is not truly on a payment plan.
If the online system shows I have setup payment options, why is manager approval by phone even a requirement? This is happening after 7 months of payments so that makes zero sense. The rep «apologized» for the lack of clarity on the website and suggested I email the website admins (right…there’s no link to that). Then I asked to speak to a billings manager and my request was ignored, twice. I will never recommend nor use their clinic again.

Can confirm the billing nightmare of the ADC. The doctors are fine, everyone’s very professional, but I’m calling for the SECOND time to talk to them about billing me for an MRI that they demanded I pay for up front. That was fine. I have a high deductible plan and I wasn’t surprised. I signed a form that explained I’d get another bill from a doctor who would view the results and send them to my neurologist.
Fine. Fair enough. When I got a second bill for $ 200, I wasn’t surprised and paid it.
Then I got a bill for THE FULL AMOUNT.
I get it. Sometimes mistakes happen, so I called. I was annoyed, but whatever. I was on hold for a long time, there was a lot of back and forth, but after being on hold for 20 minutes and 30 minutes of discussing the balances and payments, I felt pretty good that we were square.
Until I got another bill for the full amount. I mean, really? They know the money is there. They find it when I call, but the lady I’m talking to now saw no notation on my account from the last time. I’m on hold again right now as my account is adjusted but I have this strange feeling that this will be my new second job – calling ADC to remind them that they’ve been paid every month for eternity.
Do yourself a favor and don’t even get started with them. What started out a few years ago as a convenient place to have all my lab work and doctors coordinated has turned into Groundhog Day with their billing department.

I’ve been a patient of Dr. Ann Abraham’s since 2007. Along with annual/gyn examinations, she has treated me for a wide array of issues. She is quiet, but nice and easy to talk to.
Those are the only positives I have for her and her clinic, however. I have had so many appointments I’ve made in advance rescheduled at the last minute (day before or day of) because she «won’t be in the office that day». I understand that happens from time to time, but this happened with ⁴⁄₅ of my appointments this past year.
The staff tends to be incompetent… I’ve had specialist and imaging appointments for a back injury be put on hold because her staff has not gotten my records to them on time. Once, I had to leave my imaging appointment, go to her office and get her to sign a release form for me before I could do my imaging, all because her assistant faxed over a non-signed form and wouldn’t return the imaging center’s (or my) phone calls.
Dr. Abraham is usually late for appointments. Sometimes only 10 – 15 minutes late, but it’s not unheard of to be sitting in the room waiting 30 – 45 minutes past your appointment time. It’s been a running joke between me and my husband for the past few years; we will take bets as to how long past my appointment time I’ll wait until being seen. I can count on one hand in the past 8 years how many times she’s been within 5 minutes of my appointment time.
Honestly, I’ve put up with it for so long because searching for a new doctor and finding one you like is such a pain in the butt. Now that I’ve recently moved to Georgetown, it’s just one more reason for me to start the search…

Dont waste your time with this place. I called (a Thursday) yesterday to schedule an appointment, they took my info and insurance (twice) and gave me a 9:40 appointment the next day. When I called for directions the following day because I was lost, they told me I didn’t have an appointment and that it was cancelled last week even though I had just made it the day before. After a couple hours someone called me to apologize for the confusion and explain they did have my insurance information. This was at 11 am, she told me she would call me back in a little while. At 2 pm someone different called to tell me on Fridays doctors only work half days and I couldn’t be seen.
What a horrible experience and I didn’t even make it in the office. I have full coverage but I’m glad they won’t be getting any of it. Unprofessional, rude and irresponsible. No wonder this place has 2 stars!!!

Couldn’t be happier with my new hearing aids. This is the second set of hearing aids I have bought from ADC. This time the hearing test started with a visit to an ENT then the test. Ann Rhoner is a professional, treated me with courtesy and asked the right questions to help me buy the right hearing aids. ADC also worked my health insurance company and minimized my out of pocket expenses. This is full fledged medical center, not just a hearing aid store. There are lot of choices and decisions to make about hearing aids. If you are considering buying hearing aids it’s worth it to go see them.

I’m just curious with a name like Austin Diagnostic Clinic why I was told that they did not diagnose autoimmune disorders, but only treated them (and that’s only if you have a referral). Perhaps a tad misleading?

Hubby went to see Dr. Yen for 2 specific tests to be done. Was told by the doc (before the test was done) that he could prescribe a drug in clinical trials for a specific hormone issue. What kind of physician offers to put you on a drug you may not even need?! Hubby adamantly explained he was not interested in being put on the drug at all. Then after being told the test results would be available in 2 days, an entire week and 3 phone calls later we finally received results via a woman from their office (not sure if she was an actual nurse as she refused to say). We were then informed 1 of the 2 tests we specifically asked for had not even been done, but several unnecessary tests we did not need had been done. I’m guessing we will be expected to pay for these unnecessary labs we did not want to be done. The woman told us all the tests results were normal then started talking about the clinical trial drug again. When we asked questions in regards to why a drug would be necessary if everything is normal, she got extremely angry and rude. The woman proceeded to call me names and yell at me for over 5 minutes straight. If I attempted to interject, she would repeat what I said in a childish tone to mock me. I have never in my life had a doctor’s representative behave in such an obscenely unprofessional and downright mentally unstable manner. STAY AWAY FROM THIS MONEY-HUNGRY DRUG FACTORY! They will charge you for things you didn’t need or want, ignore what you really need, and treat you like garbage. They do not care about patients whatsoever. Their rep is so mean and nasty on the phone, I was literally crying and had to hang up on her. Disgustingly incompetent place!!!

I feel like I can’t say enough wonderful things about Dr. Mechinini, OBGYN, and her nurse/assistant Rebekah.
It’s been a couple of years since I quit my previous OBGYN due to an entire pregnancy, and subsequent few years of being treated like a number, getting a rushed 5 minutes with my actual doctor, and getting totally lost in the system when it came to getting calls back on lab work, etc. (See my other reviews for details of where NOT to go.)
I finally decided it was time to find a new OBGYN, and since I’ve started going to ADC for dermatology skin checks (Dr. Boos is great, too), family practice check-ups for myself, and pediatrician for my daughter, I scheduled with ADC for the OBGYN, at the encouragement of my family practice doctor. I was just assigned to Dr. Mechinini, so I had no preconceived notion of what she would be like.
After getting very frustrated with the full parking lot at the North Austin Medical Center/Hospital — that’s my one complaint about the ADC location, finally finding the office in the maze of several OBGYN practices at the NAMC, and walking in to find a line to check in, I was pretty much expecting the worst from my appt.
Well, the line cleared quickly, and I was called back for my appt within 5 minutes of arriving. I chatted with Rebekah, the nurse/assistant, and within 5 minutes (no exaggeration), Dr. Mechinini was in the room — what a change from my previous place, where I could wait up to 45 min in a room, for the doctor to arrive. She asked some questions and listened to me intently, looking me in the eye, even holding my hands when I got emotional and tearful. She was kind, understanding, and made me feel like a person and patient who she really cared about, which was SO refreshing and amazing. She spent at least 20 minutes with me, which as I mentioned above, is about 4 times as long as I ever got with my previous doctor, even during a problematic pregnancy.
I highly recommend Dr. Mechinini!
(Oh and all the offices are very good about uploading lab results to their online site in a timely manner, and once you’re going to multiple doctors within the system, it’s very nice that all your doctors have access to all your previous labs, medications, and diagnoses.)

Love Dr. Paige Suffredini and adore her nurse. They spend time, listen and are both very helpful. Would highly recommend them.
Now for after-hours emergency here… it sucks. Took a child in with a skin infection and the after hours doctor acted as if she had just been exposed to the worst plague in history. She was terrible. Scared the kid to death with her behavior. Took the little one back to Dr. Paige in the morning and she looked at the rash/infection, assured us it was nothing major… had the nurse wash it up, put antibiotic cream on it and sent us on our way. Both Dr. Paige and the nurse acted professional and treated the kiddo with respect. They are the best.

Ive never felt so cheap in my life. Granted I don’t have insurance Im still a human being that was in tons of pain. Had chest pain, abdominal pain and I been throwing up for days. From my understanding there are programs that would help someone in my situation pay for treatment. That’s shouldn’t even be the doctors/nurses concern. My well being should. Instead they stuck a iv in me and kicked me out an hour later WHILE I WAS STILL THROWING UP RIGHT OUTSIDE THE DOORS FOR THEM TO SEE. I hope they slipped in it. I later went to Seton NW where I was treated like a King by their entire staff. They admitted me for a couple days and showed genuine concern. Austin Diagn. Your customer service sucks and IDK maybe cause Im a young black man with no insurance but that’s no reason to treat me like crap.
OHHHHHH not to mention they diagnosed me wrong. Cross contaminated my urine sample and gave me an antibiotic which in turn helped me throw up some more AND it cost $ 88. WHen I told Seton Dr. s of my prescriptions they ran a test and said they have no idea why they gave me an antibiotic that I didn’t need. Wow. Worst experience ever. Im still sick and the only joy I have had is the thought that my review might send you somewhere else.

After waiting weeks to get in and see the rheumatologist, I showed up for my appointment hoping to get some answers about my pain and some help. I was told the doctor had already left and someone should have called me. I didn’t get a call (I checked!) The receptionist read off my phone number correctly, so no excuses! Besides the 40 minutes in the car I wasted each way, I have wasted weeks waiting to get answers and now have to start over with a new doctor since I won’t be going back here. Just as an aside, I wasn’t sure exactly where this office was so I called in on my way and was on hold for 21 minutes, no one picked up at all. I hung up as I walked in the office to talk to the receptionist. I wish I had read a review like this before I wasted all this time!

The doctors here don’t tell you about hidden lab fees. You can get into a billing nightmare coming here, and I find Heather Farmer, the RN responsible for responding to patients of Dr. Kiran Mechenini to be curt, rude, and unhelpful.
For a rather non-emergency, they told me I’d undergo a «little procedure.» That turns out to be a major surgery where they anesthetize me and I’m bleeding for over 20 days.

I went to 3 different doctors here. First one was primary care, Dr. Eisen, she was nice enough. Then Dr. Allison Devine, OB/GYN, she was very professional and listened to all my concerns and finally Dr. Alice Freidman, GI specialist.
She was great until after she milked the money out of me and my insurance company! She took a big chunk for a procedure, overcharged me, and then kept the money ($ 200!) that was supposed to be refunded to me.
ADC’s policy is not to return the money unless the patient calls them him/herself to claim it back! WTH?! So UNETHICAL! Unbelievable and ridiculous… will never go back!

I hardly ever go to the doctor, and if I do, it’s gotta be something really bad for me to take time off and come in.
Thanks Cedar Fever for harassing me this season. It wasn’t a surprise that I had severe allergies this time of year — the usual mucus dripping, eye watering, lung congestion crap… TIMES 10. It’s just that it hit me like a hard MMA takedown out of the blue.
I made an appointment with the ADC allergist at their north Austin location and they got me in the next day, which is unheard of for most doctors. I got Dr. Oberhuff — straightforward guy who checked all of my symptoms and every scenario. He even did a flu swab to make because my symptoms were so bad. He wrote me a prescription, hooked me up with some steroids and some nasal spray, and within an hour, I was already feeling much better in days.
Overall, I had a good experience that I was expecting. Quick, relieved, and on my way!
