History
Established in 1998.
ART on 5th is the culmination of owner Joe Sigel’s dream of opening a contemporary gallery in Austin. In 1995, when Joe settled in Austin from Santa Fe, there were no contemporary galleries, so opening one was a real risk. However, with 10 years of art industry experience, Mr. Sigel could see the market changing from bluebonnets, western, and traditional landscape paintings to colorful, sophisticated abstract and figurative work. The gallery opened in 1998 in the perfect venue for a gallery –the spacious, museum-like large space which had been the Austin Children’s Museum. Since the very beginning ART on 5th has shown artists never before seen in Austin, from the artwork of rockers John Lennon, Grace Slick, Ronnie Wood, and Jerry Garcia to an Andy Warhol exhibition that was the largest even shown in Texas. Housing the largest collection of the art of Dr. Seuss in the country, the «Secret Art of Dr. Seuss» is truly the grown-up side of the art of Dr. Seuss, and loved by all.
Meet the Business Owner
Joe S.
Business Owner
ART on 5th owner Joe Sigel is, maybe, the least likely art gallery owner. Artist? No. Art history major? No. Bachelor’s degree in math? Yes. MBA? Yes. Art lover? Yes. Suffice it to say that in his 35+ year business career, 26 of those years have been in the art business. Mr. Sigel became a serious collector in the 1980’s and transitioned into a private art dealer, based in Los Angeles, securing art for many galleries across Japan and throughout the U. S. From L.A. Joe moved to Santa Fe and tested the waters with a small gallery in an old adobe house off Canyon Road. His appetite now whet by the ever changing nature of a retail art gallery, Mr. Sigel immediately planned opening a gallery when he moved to Austin in 1995. After 2 years of searching and analyzing the market, ART on 5th was born. What makes ART on 5th unique is the low-key museum-like surroundings, the profusion of over 400 pieces of art, and a strident goal to bring the new and the exciting in art to Austin.
