Austin Optometry Group

I went to Austin Optometry Group only to purchase frames and lenses after obtaining a prescription elsewhere. I was happy to learn they accept VSP insurance. They have a lovely and cool selection of frames and the staff was extremely helpful in assisting me in making a choice. It’s a small shop and is quite charming.
But the real gem of this place is Jim, who is in charge of ordering and fitting the eyewear. When I first received my glasses, I could not see out of them (through no fault of Austin Optometry Group). It turned out that my prescription (obtained from a doctor unaffiliated with Austin Optometry Group) was completely wrong. Jim was absolutely wonderful; he told me that if I was able to obtain a new prescription, he would order new lenses AT NO CHARGE. And he kept his word on that. Moreover, Jim was always available when I called and made a concerted effort to ensure that I was happy. Fortunately, I received a new prescription and promptly received my new lenses from Jim and Austin Optometry Group. And they are fantastic! Not only can I actually see now, but my frames look beautiful. What made the difference for me, however, was the fabulous customer service that I received from Jim. I will definitely be going back to Austin Optometry Group when I need new glasses again — and, of course, will ask for Jim.

I can’t even begin to express how disappointed I’ve been in my experience with this practice. I found them through my new vision insurance site, and what was supposed to be a simple yearly visit to update my contact prescription turned into months of dealing with more and more charges, orders taking sometimes 5 weeks to come in, and some of the rudest staff. Dr Chhean is very nice, but is hardly ever in the office, making it impossible to be seen for the endless follow up visits to check the contact fits. She is also soon leaving the practice, which doesn’t surprise me since everyone else in the office is snippy and patronizing toward patients. This practice charges more than any other one I’ve ever been to, and there is always more fees they find to charge me even though at first I initially paid a $ 300 fee just to have them fit me for contacts. I have now paid them a total of almost $ 1000 and still have not been fitted with the «right» contacts. I’m in total shock as to how this practice is still open with how shady it is.

I would like to give Neng Chhean, O.D. a good review because I liked her very much; however, the office staff was snippy when I showed my SHOCK at the price for a contact lens fitting — $ 303!!! Initially I was told the cost of the fitting would be $ 110, but AFTER the full exam, the assistant came in to tell me it would be $ 303 for multi-​focal lenses. Also, when filling out the initial paperwork, I specifically wrote on the form that I must approve of any additional costs (tests), but I was never informed until checkout that I owed an extra $ 60. Needless to say, I left the office without the lens fitting (I paid the $ 60 even though I should not have). I did find a fine doctor that afternoon who does MULTI-​FOCAL contact lens fittings for $ 80. I would like to add that the optician (who sells and fits the eyeglasses) is very nice and does a fine job.

I’ve been seeing Dr. Chhean for over two years and she is fabulous. She’s so warm, friendly, and very thorough. She alerted me to a problem with my cornea and found a highly regarded specialist in Houston to perform the surgery. She has called to follow up and see how I’m doing and has been very supportive of me post-​op. When I wanted to get glasses after the surgery she encouraged me to wait till my vision stabilized, saying it would change hourly anyway. I appreciated her honesty. Her assistants are all terrific, and Dr. Bob Joe is terrific as well. Jim in their eyeglasses department is wonderful, always helping me find affordable frames. Highly recommend these folks!

I had RK surgery in my left eye twenty some years ago, and my vision has been poor ever since. Especially at night.
Dr. Chhean fitted me with Synergize hybrid contacts, in March, 2014 and my vision is great. Starburst effects at night are totally eliminated and my vision is crisp and clear. Something that I have not had for many years. It is a constant joy to me.. She has also helped me with my dry eye condition and I couldn’t be happier.

I have a fairly rare and difficult to treat eye condition (keratoconus). Dr. Chhean has been working with me for a couple of years now, and has been incredibly patient and thorough. I initially went in for Synergeyes hybrid lenses, which require a somewhat iterative process and a lot of tweaking. We went through about a half dozen different pairs in the process of finding the best comfort/​vision. She seems un-​rushed and quite willing to explain everything in detail.
Definitely one of the best optometrists I’ve been to, and I’ve been to a lot of them.

Dr. Chhean O.D. and her assistant gave me one of the most thorough eye exams that I’ve ever had. Service was polite, efficient, and knowledgeable. The equipment is more up-​to-​date than the equipment of two other local eye doctors that I saw in the past two years.
I chose my eyeglasses here too. I’m not fussy about glasses, so others may find the selection limited, but I’m happy with my choice.
