History
Established in 2009.
What is an «Urban Cannibal»?
A creator and consumer of urban culture; the concept of urban dwellers creating sustainable cohesive communities through shared resources, talents and services.
What is «Urban Cannibals Bodega & Bites»?
Urban Cannibals Bodega & Bites is a neighborhood general store & deli located in East Atlanta is the collaborative effort and brainchild of Chef Calavino Donati & Artist/Activist Doria Roberts.
What does «We Serve People» mean?
While it’s an obvious play on words, it’s also the slogan for the community service component of Urban Cannibals Bodega & Bites.
Our Mission Statement
Urban Cannibals Bodega & Bites will strive to bring together culturally divergent communities with similar goals for their communities by providing access to sustainable products, forging lasting relationships with local and urban farmers and, most importantly, learning from and educating consumers about responsible stewardship.
Meet the Business Owner
Doria and Calavino D.
Business Owner
Calavino Donati has been a chef for 20 years but has been cooking all her life. After cutting her teeth at various hotspots around town, she opened and ran the Roman Lily Café, one of the first restaurants to «take on» Atlanta’s Old Fourth Ward, for ten years. Her presence and success there precipitated and fueled the current development boom in the area.
A true urban pioneer, Donati seeks comfort and «home» at every level. Her food, a bohemian mix of various «soul food» influences from around the world, reflects the ideal that everyone is welcome (and well fed) when they sit at her table.
Doria Roberts is, by profession, a musician and activist but decided to take a break from her busy touring scheudle to run Urban Cannibals with her wife Calavino. Originally enlisted to keep the books and do the online marketing, Roberts’ role expanded unexpectedly when customers’ demand of her holiday cookies could no longer be ignored.
She now runs the «bakery side» of the deli.
