If you’ve read my review of Salon Carcica, you know I’ve had the same hairdresser for 17 years; you would be correct to surmise that we’ve grown pretty close in that time. A few years back, Carl had some Rolf therapy work done and it piqued my interest. Rolfing is a special type of body work — not really massage, it’s more interactive than that, but that’s sort of the easiest way to start explaining it.
It incorporates the entire body and one of its goals is to work through chronic pain or tension, and focus on alignment (or re-​alignment) and increased awareness of how you hold and carry yourself. There is some amount of connection to psychotherapy or psychological work for a lot of people, and many patrons as well as practictioners experience and believe in the connection between certain emotions and their manifestations in the body.
Yesterday, I had my second hour-​and-​a-​half Rolf session with Ray Bishop at the Center for Inner Knowledge in Sandy Springs. It took me a year or so to find a therapist (and, funnily, I did so completely by chance– I was eating at the bar at Maggiano’s one night and struck up a conversation with a woman who’d been to several different seminars and massage sessions with different CIK practitioners! Maybe my dining habit does have a purpose beyond the obvious!). I checked out their website —

I haven’t had any amazing or emotional epiphanies so far, but I have gotten a little more in tune with where certain chronic tensions are in my body. They tell you that most people need to go three or four times to really get in a groove, and it’s a little intimidating to stand in front of someone and have them examine you and surmise where you could use some «work» from the Rolf perspective. But. .. I think it might help.
The Center also does different workshops and seminars relating to personal growth and those sorts of mental and psychological ends. They also have «regular» massage treatment and the like. Their website is a great resource. If you’re interested in any of the above, take a look!
