History
Established in 1975.
Originally named «The Frame Shop,» the store was founded by Peter Graham, the son of Graham’s Art Studio (since closed) in San Luis Obispo fame, and located in downtown Atascadero on Traffic Way. The store sold in 1984 to Harry & Mitzy Sackrider who changed the name to «The Frame Shoppe,» expanded the store’s offering to include gifts, greeting cards and vintage item and moved to their current location.
The current owners, John & Allyson Buerger, purchased the store in 1993 (on Valentine’s Day — how romantic), added a second store in Grover Beach (eventually moved to Pismo Beach and finally closed in 2004), changed the name to «Accents» and updated the retail product mix with a greater emphasis on home décor accessories.
Our primary framer, John Stapp has been with the store since 1979 (the Peter Graham era) and has been working in the picture framing industry since high school. Our emphasis is on using design concepts to show off your art and help you tell the story behind it.
Meet the Business Owner
John B.
Business Owner
John and Allyson purchased Accents from the Sackriders in 1993. They signed the papers on Valentine’s Day (how romantic). John came from a creative background (mostly photography) and moved into picture framing from his previous career in broadcasting. John became a Certified Picture Framer in 1994 and created the basic design process we still employ at Accents at that time.
While John B still works at the store on most Saturday’s, he has been a financial planner and business coach since 2002 and continues to develop that practice full time. Still, John enjoys the creative process and working with color and design principles while doing custom framing design for our customers. John B also manages all the ordering of materials and the cutting, mitering and joining of picture frames for the store.
