Ashland has several excellent art galleries and artist studios. Hanson Howard is one of the oldest and one of my wife’s favorites. I find if I drink a couple of beers nest door in Standing Stone Brewery the art is more appealing.

I’ve visited this gallery each year for many years. The art is consistently engaging, and the exhibitions incredibly well curated. The new space is lovely, and right near the main square in town. Best of all is the incredibly knowledgeable and friendly owner, Judy(who also happens to be one of the artists whose spectacular work is occasionally shown). It’s really a very extraordinary«attraction» in Ashland, and I’m always excited to visit. Don’t miss it!

This is a real art gallery(not gift shop), where the art is very high quality and changes monthly. I always find something of interest here, and the owner is very knowledgeable about the work. She also pulled things from storage because I was looking for something specific. There is no overriding theme to the art shown, its always different. I’ve bought a great landscape painting, and a quirky ceramic sculpture. My only complaint is I wish the gallery was larger.

The Howard Hanson Gallery has moved into a very attractive spot within a rebuilt building that is owned by Standing Stone Brewery. This space also formerly housed the Book Exchange. Gayle and I wandered in and lingered. She immediately picked out a Blue Bird of Happiness, while I watched a local sculpture artist successfully selling his work to the owner for display. Gayle also had an eye for a certain ceramic piece(with glasses) that still might just find its way under the Christmas Tree.
