Located in Old Ashburn, we are the area’s premier traditional Japanese martial arts school. Our founder, Master Hidy Ochiai, is a world-​famous martial artist, who has taught in the US since 1966. And now, he is teaching in Ashburn along with his long-​time apprentice, Sensei William Max Winkler.

History

Established in 1966.

Master Hidy Ochiai brought the style of karate that we teach from Japan to the US, called Washin-​ryu Karate-​Do, and established his first school in 1966. Since then, Master Ochiai’s highly reputable and internationally respected schools have spread across the country, most recently to Northern Virginia in 2012, when Sensei William Max Winkler came to the area after completing his apprenticeship directly under Master Ochiai. In the summer of 2013, Sensei Winkler acquired a condominium space at 20 604 Gordon Park Square #170 in Ashburn, VA. It took nine months for this space to be properly built out to accommodate a traditional Japanese martial arts school. On Friday, April 25, 2014 the dojo officially opened, and daily classes are being held there today taught both Master Ochiai and Sensei Winkler.

Business Owner

William Max Winkler is a fifth degree black belt and the Chief Instructor at Hidy Ochiai Karate of Northern Virginia in Old Ashburn. Sensei Winkler has had a life-​long love of the martial arts, but it wasn’t until he met Master Ochiai in 2000 that he found the martial art he would dedicate his life to learning and to teaching. Upon graduating Cornell University in 2003 with a B.A. in Religious Studies and a concentration in Asian Studies, Sensei Winkler moved to Binghamton, NY to train with Master Ochiai fulltime at his National Headquarters, beginning an apprenticeship that would last 9 years. In that time, Sensei Winkler has had numerous achievements in martial arts competition, and he has held many teaching positions leading up to his establishment of Hidy Ochiai Karate of Northern Virginia in 2012. Sensei Winkler is excited to share all the knowledge he has accumulated over the years with the Northern Virginia community!
