I had my wisdom teeth extracted by Dr. Corcoran. To me, his demeanor and attitude came across as frivolous and inappropriate given the gravity of my procedure. To be fair, he was friendly enough, but both my consultation and my follow-​up visit consisted of minimal conversation and very brief dental inspections. I felt almost as though he did not want to take the time for thorough examinations and that he did not take these important examinations as seriously as he should have. I would not recommend.

Nobody EVER wants to go to the oral surgeon but if you have to go, this is the man to see. Dr. Corcoran is really laid back, easy going, entertaining, and puts you totally at ease. Hopefully I won’t have to go back for a long time but if I need to go I’ll be back here.

I love him so much!!! I had a difficult tooth that needed to be extracted and I had a bad experience trying to get it removed before so I just let it sit to the point that the gum grew around it… and then came Dr. Corcoron. He was fantastic! I came in so nervous but he gave me novocaine and gas and I sat and talked to both of his assistants (they were so sweet). Then he walked in and extracted my tooth in what felt like 5 minutes. I felt no pain and I was in and out in less than and hour.

Let’s be honest, everyone hates the dentist. What’s worse than the dentist? The ones that do root canals and then oral surgeons. You don’t go there unless something pretty bad is going on and pain is almost always involved. Why would someone choose a profession where everyone hates being there and dreads the visits? I can’t answer that but Dr. Corcoran is the best dental related professional I’ve met.
He always is in good cheer and makes funny little jokes to cut the tension. He calls you afterwards to see how things are going. The pain was very minimal and not a single even minor complication with a tooth pulling and implant. The receptionist are also nice and with two offices in falls church and Arlington, always an appointment to be had despite his busy schedule.

I dread all things dentist-​related, so much so that I’ve been putting off getting my wisdoms extracted for 15 years. They weren’t causing problems, but they sure weren’t helping, either. My dentist referred me to Dr Corcoran to have them removed, so I called and made an appointment for consultation. I was able to get in the same week, and the receptionist patiently explained all the location and time options I had.
I was nervous about my consultation. I had never had any kind of surgery in my life, and I didn’t know how much damage my wisdoms were in for. Dr Corcoran came in, and assuming he’s met many nervous patients, he immediately calmed my nerves with a few awesome dentist jokes. He showed me the X-​ray, explained everything that would be done, and I left feeling great about it. I got on board, and scheduled the real appointment for a couple weeks later.
Fast forward to today; I had all four wisdom teeth removed, 1 of which was impacted, the rest simple extractions. I got the works with the laughing gas and the general anesthesia, and when I woke up an hour later, huzzah… no wisdom teeth. Surprisingly, I am in no pain despite having taken only 2 Advil right after the surgery. The numbness has gone away, and I have some swelling on the impacted side, but no pain. Huh.
Dr Corcoran even called me at 9pm to see how I was doing. He noted that I sounded awfully chipper, and expressed that I should continue to take care of my wounds, even with no pain. How incredibly thoughtful of the guy to call me long after the workday is over, to make sure I wasn’t dying or allergic to the antibiotics.
My husband said that right after surgery I told him, «Gosh I feel great, I wish I felt this way all the time!» I think that means Dr Corcoran is doing something exactly right.

Dr. Corcoran removed a small cyst from the inside of my mouth. The experience could not have been better. Both the initial consultation and the surgery happened on time. He provided precise information about what was going to happen — always very professional and friendly. The surgery lasted about 10 minutes, and I am recovering without issues.

I recently had my wisdom teeth extracted, and i had been dreading this appointment for months. Finally the pain was unbearable. They were able to fit me the as soon as possible. Dr. Corcoran took his time with the procedure, and explained what was happening throughout the procedure. Next thing i know he was done. He also called me that night to check up on me, and make sure my pain meds were doing their job. Getting your teeth extracted is never fun, but he sure did an amazing job.

I recently had my wisdom teeth extracted by Dr. Corcoran at the Arlington office. 1 was impacted, the other had already emerged. My other wisdom teeth were extracted previously by another oral surgeon and my previous experience left me dreading the current. (previously had the dry socket, huge swelling, you name it.) My dentist had sent me to several other oral surgeons who did not accept my dental insurance. I am happy that I found Dr. Corcoran via my insurance website. I used Unilocal and read all the reviews prior to choosing an oral surgeon. Below is why I have given Dr. Corcoran and his office 5 stars.
— Bedside manner: I found that Dr. Corcoran has great bedside manner. He put me at ease during out consultation. My wait was long initially to see him, however, he was working on a case and the same attention that he gave to the patient he was with is exactly the same attention and detail that he gave to me. He answered all of my questions.
— Ease of the process/​front desk: The receptionist was very easy to work with and professional. She explained my insurance parameters and took her time assisting me.
— The procedure: exactly as described. Quick, painless (except for the obvious). I chose IV sedation for my extraction and took only Motrin 800 mg 3 times a day for the first 5 days and iced as directed.
I highly recommend Dr. Corcoran and his team. I trust this man with my teeth and hope he’s around one day when I need implants. He really is a fantastic oral surgeon and medical provider.

No one wants to see an Oral Surgeon, but I can honestly say Dr. Corcoran made it a pleasant experience. My initial consult was very reassuring, and he took extra time to review options with me, as I have a complicated situation involving four different doctors. My extraction was quick and pretty painless, and the only thing better would have been to not need the surgery in the first place! I highly recommend Dr. Corcoran.

I know my reviews are usually extreme (1 or 5 stars) but those are really the only situations in which I’m motivated to write reviews!
I have been to countless doctors’ offices — medical surgeons, dentists, endocrinologists, hematologists, plastic surgeons, pediatricians, primary care physicians, LASIK surgeons, Hopkins, Georgetown, Wilmer, San Francisco, Manhattan, DC, Chicago, Philadelphia — you name it, I’ve gone, usually to accompany my mother. I have to say that Dr. Corcoran’s office is the first office I’ve visited that has been exemplary in every way.
The front office staff and dental assistants are all unfailingly polite, friendly and professional (this in and of itself is basically a miracle — for the most part, front office staff in DC Metro area MD offices are horrible, nasty, unhelpful and just plain rude). Dr. Corcoran’s staff are flexible, compassionate (agreed to put a placeholder in for my surgery before it was confirmed by the Dr just to put my mind at ease since my insurance would be running out soon) and efficient/​competent (when’s the last time a doctor’s office voluntarily sent you a check for the amount they owed you after insurance paid up? WITHOUT PROMPTING? *Never*. Usually they try to hold onto that cash with every ounce of energy their grubby hands have got, to help their cash flow. Not so at Whiston Patterson and Corcoran!) Not only that, they answer the phone on the first couple rings and don’t make you wade through phone tree hell. The dental assistants take their jobs seriously and are very thorough in their explanations and patient prep. And everyone plays their respective roles with perpetual smiles on their faces, always at the ready with a kind comment or friendly banter. Truly impressive.
Dr. Corcoran himself is a hoot — besides his impeccable technical skill (effortlessly extracted a molar that had only a sliver of visible tooth remaining, successfully placed the implant for the same molar in 45 minutes flat), he has a sense of humor, loves putting people at ease, and could even be called a bit folksy in his communication style. Always patient, always jovial, he loves to answer questions and explain details, but is efficient and competent at the same time.
WIth all this, I could care less how the office looks. I’m just glad that an operation like this exists, in any form! I commend everyone there for making us patients feel so well-​cared-​for. Look forward to going back in a week for my 1 week dental implant followup.
Edit: after writing that novel, I realized I forgot to note that the office is PROMPT! I have never waited more than 3 minutes before being taken back to one of the exam/​treatment rooms.

Dr. Corcoran is an excellent doctor! I read a lot of reviews on Unilocal and other sites and everyone was correct in stating that he makes you feel more at ease with your wisdom teeth situation. I went to my consultation last week and I was greeted by his extremely professional and friendly front desk assistant, Heather. She explained what my insurance would cover and clarified the charges. Dr. Corcoran took a look at my widsom teeth and explained everything to me in detail and I did not feel rushed at all. He made me feel like it would be a walk in the park. I wish every doctor I have had would be like him– makes you feel at ease and very calm. I had all my wisdom teeth removed this past Monday and everything went well. He and his entire team and assistant made me feel so comfortable and when I woke up from the anesthesia, everything was done! I didn’t feel a thing.
Heather was amazing and phoned my pharmacy to fill my prescription (that I forgot to fill before my procedure). When we got to the pharmacy, the prescription was ready to be picked up.
Four days later, I asked Dr. Corcoran’s office to fax a note to my employer and it was done in less than 10 minutes by Heather! I have had a very positive experience and will recommend this doctor and his office to anyone and everyone I know.
I do agree that their office is outdated, but it is clean. I would rather have a great doctor and good care than an updated office.

I just had my referral consultation with Dr. Corcoran a few weeks ago at his Falls Church office. He’s friendly, informative, and patient. Our conversation about my prospective procedure was casual and comfortable. He was reassuring and took his time explaining the risks involved, which reconciled nicely with the research I had done. I’m looking forward to working with him in the near future.
I’ll update my review accordingly based on the quality of service he provides.

Dr. Corcoran is the friendliest doctor I have ever met. He is great at what he does and made me feel at ease during my wisdom tooth extraction. I was very nervous, but he and his staff helped keep me calm. The whole procedure went very well, no complaints. Didn’t swell, had minimal pain afterwards, and healed very nicely! Couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Can’t recommend him enough!

My dentist referred me to an oral surgeon because– after 31 years of not bothering me — he decided that he saw something on my X-​ray around the wisdom teeth that needed a more professional opinion. He first referred me to a surgeon who he knew personally. I went there for an evaluation. Then, upon hearing what needed to be done to my chompers and jaw I realized I needed a surgeon that was both in medical (carefirst) and dental (metlife) networks. The first surgeon was not in both. So I was a bit stuck. I found Dr Corcoran on both my insurance sites as in-​network (of course looked at Unilocal) and called his office.
Immediately, this is where the ease of mind started, his staff member, Heather, was extremely helpful in coaching me what to tell the first surgeon and what to get from them to make things easier when i shawed up at Dr. C’s. She scheduled my 2^nd consultation and the surgery with Dr. Corcoran for 2 days after that so I wouldn’t have to wait and I already had an idea of what needed to get done.
Fast forward 2 weeks without a great night of sleep and tons of webmd, I had my consultation. Dr. Corcoran immediately put me to ease. Where my initial diagnosis was scary he made it clear that it wasn’t as bad as it was made out to be. He was very comforting and funny and answered all my questions candidly. He did concur though that after 30 years — the wisdom teeth, impacted (but not painful), needed to go before they cause MORE damage. Peace out teeth… (there’s nothing wise about them btw they should be called dumb teeth)
Fast forward 2 more days: I never had an IV (even giving blood scares me), I never had any surgery, I never had anesthesia. I was a ball of nerves for the surgery today. Again, the doc and his staff were GREAT. After they hooked me up, you could actually hear the calming influence when my heartbeats went from playing LMFAO to Coldplay on the monitor. This was before they even hit the button for the good stuff. Then before I knew it, I was snoozing. The doc went to work and I woke up to the same smiling faces and a Vicodin prescription… and a ride out to my girlfriends car.
I still have some fat cheeks, hamburger withdrawal, and wont be hitting the town this weekend but Dr. Corcoran’s part of this adventure is over and he gets a 5-​star. So glad that I stumbled in to him (and literally away from him this morning)
I do agree with the earlier review that the office ambience could use some updates but I guess when you are having teeth cut out while sleeping it doesn’t need to look like a Vegas hotel…

I finally acquiesced to getting all four of my impacted wisdom teeth removed after five years of being told I needed to do so. On the recommendation of my dentist, I requested a consultation here. Dr. Corcoran was very low fuss and reassuring about the whole procedure. I felt at ease with him. The receptionist was sick when I went for my initial consult, and I ended up having to reschedule twice because I then got sick. I took one star off for her, because I think that people in the health care industry shouldn’t be allowed to come to work sick! The staff was professional about my rescheduling needs. Also, I had a few additional questions about the type of anesthesia I wanted and Dr. Corcoran was kind enough to call me back and answer my questions prior to the procedure.
Cut to day of. I was VERY anxious as I’d never gone under anesthesia. Dr. Corcoran and a nurse named Brenda were fantastic. I told them I wanted to go twilight at first and to give me more should I need it. They put me at ease and allowed my husband to stay in the room until the effects of the anesthesia kicked in. They even humored me by listening to me babble on and on about my honeymoon in order to distract myself from the IV. I did waked up at one point saying «ow» because I felt the needle in my mouth for the local anesthetic portion, but then I quickly fell asleep again and don’t remember anything until I woke up asking for my husband and sticking my tongue out.
I’ll spare my fellow Unilocalers the details of my recovery. A week later, I went to the follow up consultation. Some of my dissolvable stitches were still in, but he said everything looked good! A few weeks later and I’m doing great!

My 7-​year-​old had to have extra teeth pulled under general anesthesia. Dr. Corcoran was wonderful… gentle, competent, and caring. He called us at home the night of her surgery to check on us and took extra time to explain things to us. Love him!

Dr. Corcoran is fantastic! I went to see a different dentist the day before I saw Dr. Corcoran because I had some awful pain in my mouth, which I suspected was related to my wisdom tooth and possibly an infection. The dentist I saw before was not very helpful and couldn’t explain to me what was happening and just said that I should take my wisdom teeth out, which I think is a generic cop-​out.
Thank goodness I was able to miraculously see Dr. Corcoran less than 24 hours later, who was extremely sharp, professional, and friendly! He explained in detail what was going on and confirmed that my tooth was infected, gave me a prescription to help with the infection and pain, and further explained to me what exactly will happen when he yanks my teeth out (upon my infection healing). He answered all my questions with deep knowledge and made me feel very confident in him, as anyone would want to feel when it comes to getting a part of you surgically removed.
I have yet to get my wisdom teeth pulled out in a few weeks, but I’ve been extremely impressed with my experience with Dr. Corcoran. If I had not gone to see him, I would have continued to suffer from a very painful infection that a different dentist apparently could not diagnose and my situation could have gotten worse. In addition, I have never had any kind of surgery before and can’t even handle getting shots, yet I am totally comfortable with Dr. Corcoran pulling my wisdom teeth out. Glad to hear from other Unilocalers that he also does a fantastic job with the surgery!
The front office was also super friendly. One last note and tip: I went to the Falls Church office, which is not exactly metro-​accessible, but I found out when I got there that there is a shuttle that takes you back and forth between the metro stop and the office. A great option for those like me who do not have a car!

Being told you have to get an infected tooth yanked out is probably one of the worst ways to spend a day, second only to the actual yanking of said tooth. Dr. Corcoran at least calms any worries you may have of being in the best hands only. His referral came from both an endocrinologist and my dentist (Woohoo for Dr Greg LaVecchia!) as one of the top tooth-​yankers in the area. He is smiley and soft in a way that soothes you as best as someone can in this situation. He offered me the option of being awake or asleep for the procedure, and because I’m a «problem patient» (i.e. can’t sit still/​stay lucid) and also because I decided to go big and get the wisdom teeth pulled at the same time (you may as well), I decided to go under.
The day of the surgery, his assistant Josephine helped coax me into the room. She was an absolute angel, and didn’t make me feel badly for sobbing and violently squirming around. She kept her patience and stayed sweet. Dr. Corcoran also made an appearance while I was still awake and did his best to soothe me. Many thanks to both of them — I know it wasn’t easy.
My only suggestion to make it a five star experience would have been to update the rooms a bit, make them more comfortable and welcoming and feel a bit newer. Warm paint colors, new floors, and appropriate decorations go a long way for the nerves of patients sitting in those rooms!

Dr. Corcoran is a fantastic oral surgeon (referred by the wonderful Dr. Wenk). I recommend him for all your dental surgery needs (may they be few).
I got my wisdom teeth removed by him (all 4 at once!) and was surprised by the courtesy and professionalism exhibited by him and his staff. He explained to me exactly what was going to happen and made sure to answer my questions without the slightest hint of condescension. I was offered local or general anesthesia (I chose local — I’d rather be awake) and when I decided I didn’t like the laughing gas, they took it away pronto. The procedure went pretty quickly, even with stitches, and I felt that they were very efficient. I was sent home with a bottle of Vicodin, which I ended up hardly needing.
Funny Note: As I left his office after my consultation a gust of wind blew a chunk of dust straight into my eye (yes, I know — I am a walking accident, Calamity Jane, what have you). His assistants had to run my eye under an eyebath (normally used to flush out chemicals) for several minutes in order to get out dust particles, dirt, and two loose eyelashes. They were perfectly lovely and did not even laugh.
