Jim & Mary Ann LeRoy opened the Tanstaafl Pub on April 21, 1976. From the time they opened, they wanted customers to feel like they were walking into the family’s living room. Thirty nine years and many interesting stories later, the Tanstaafl is still like walking into their living room.

This is my favorite bar in town. I’m there at least 4 nights a week, their drinks are strong,& well priced. It is smokey! but that adds to the character of the place, its not some so called sports bar or stinking restaurant, & no damn kids. it is a true bar with darts, pool tables, bar snacks, & even a trivia & game night, all in all its a great place, where u go to drink, smoke, have a good time & unwind. Too smokey, smelled like cat piss. Everyone stares at you when you walk in. Shady. Not a fan, would not go back. Very weird location for a bar.

As much as I love hole in the wall bars you can still smoke in, this place isn’t worth it.
When I heard there was a cat living in the bar I was kinda stoked cuz I love kitties. But Tanstaafl smells like cat pee, and I literally watched Whiskers take a dump on the corner stage. GROSS.
Cash only is a bit of a put out for me, but they’re pretty clear about it up front.
Service is friendly and fast, but DAMN, that smell of cat pee is unbearable! Just go over to Gold Nugget or Sunshine.

This bar is my home away from home, my home room. If i go out any given night i either start here or finnish here. Cold beer, excellent staff, great juke box, devine prices, and only 1 rule!!! If you don’t know it, then I guess you’ll just have to go find out what it is for yourself! See ya around the Tanstaafl Pub!

I had the pleasure of attending a birthday party here and enjoyed every minute of it! It’s cash only and I feel like it helps (A LOT) to know somebody. I happen to be there on a night with excellent music via the jukebox and the bartender was cute and friendly. The only down side for me is that you’re allowed to smoke in the bar. I had forgotten how much I dislike coming home from a night out and have smoke saturate my entire being.

This place is like a secret locals bar. Its an old hippie hangout. Cheap beer, pool, darts, and music. We go there every thurs and take our guitars for jam night. Theres also a patio out back where people go smoke. You can meet some crazy people out there! Mak sure you bring cash!

Is this a first review? Okay kids, the name of this bar stands for «There ain’t no such thing as a free lunch». The place is old and dirty just like we like it. Cash only, no cards. There is a small patio and I mean small. Darts and pool tables and juke box. Live music sometimes. The service is very friendly. Rumor has it that this is one of the oldest bars in Arlington. I can’t remember whether Stagecoach or the Why Not Bar has the other oldest liquor license…
