Established in 1966.

First Alarm has been protecting business and homeowners for more than 40 years. The company, which began as a modest security force in Santa Cruz County, is now one of Northern California’s première commercial and residential security providers.

Dave Hood– President

Dave Hood joined First Alarm in 1989. As the President of First Alarm he oversees all aspects of the company’s operations. In his 22 year career with First Alarm, he has held leadership roles in both security guard-​force management and electronic security systems.

He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Golden Gate University, and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Colorado State University. As an active member of the community, Dave currently chairs the Career Center Committee for the Santa Cruz County Workforce. He also recently finished his term as Finance Director for the La Selva Beach Parks and Recreation District in Santa Cruz County

Their customer service is BAD! They treat you as if you are not important enough to get back with you when there are issues. I had to deal with them a few times and each time, I had to get back to them. We finally went to another company.
If a company can’t treat ALL their customers as important as the next, they are not in my book to use!

As a residential customer I’ve been very pleased with First Alarm’s service. When a window was replaced recently and the alarm no longer worked, a very competent man came out to fix it. He really cared about my home’s security, pointing our things I could do to make it more secure that had nothing to do with the alarm system. I especially appreciate the panic alarm they offer that my elderly mother wears whenever my husband and I are out — I don’t worry about her falling and having no way to get help. After 11 years in our home, we finally decided to purchase an alarm system. FIrst Alarm was very professional and thorough. They tailored the quote to exactly what we needed and helped us decide on what options best suit our home. We were very pleased with the ability to pick and choose different options and «layers» of coverage. You can keep it simple or get high tech, if so inclined. The installer (Edgar) was «above and beyond» as far as dedication and hard work. He understood every detail of the system and was able to clearly and simply explain. He even cleaned up after the work was completed! His tutorial on usage was easy to follow and very thorough. We love our new system… cannot wait to add to its functionality! A top rating for First Alarm!

If you want a security system that is tailored specifically for your needs, with its operation clearly and thoroughly explained to you, my experience has been that this company will do that for you.
First Alarm installed a home security system for me about a month and a half ago, and I have been VERY impressed with their customer service. Before I signed a contract with them, their security consultant spent over two hours with me at my home (at a time that was convenient for ME) discussing options, and explaining the pros and cons of various possible setups. After meeting with him, my housemate and I had several follow-​up questions, and he answered each of my emails promptly, with clear explanations and responses. I felt that he was really trying to arrive at a security setup that would work for me rather than trying to sell me on any particular solution.
After the system was installed, he came back for another visit, and spent an hour making sure I understood how to use the system and helping me set the cameras up to get the maximum benefit from them. When I had technical questions that he didn’t know the answers to, he contacted the installation tech, and again provided me with timely and clear responses.
Yes, the system is a little more expensive than a larger company might have provided, and yes, there is a three-​year contract, but it’s worth it to me to be dealing with a company that provides this level of personalized service.

I love my First Alarm security system! I feel much safer in my home with it. It’s a locally owned company, which is important to me. The installers were friendly and really knew what they were doing. They even cleaned up without my having to ask them, unlike some other contractors I’ve used. The monitoring station operators are helpful and answer the phone in person, no phone tree BS, (I LOVE that). I can easily recommend First Alarm.

Our house was broken into this past September; it is a rude awakening how vulnerable we were. We had talked with friends and First Alarm received consistent strong recommendations. Our first meeting with a representative was reassuring, we received a comprehensive analysis of our needs. The next day we received a tiered proposal that helped us decide the level of protection we wanted. Once we selected our security an installer was scheduled. A professional and knowledgeable installer spent the better part of two days getting our house secure and teaching us how to use the system. We tripped the alarm the first night, receiving an immediate phone call from First Alarm. A friendly voice asked for our clearance code and worked us through what we did wrong and cleared the alarm. We have not had a false alarm since. Knowing that we are secure has been a comfort for the last six months. Thanks First Alarm.

We have used First Alarm for our home security system for many years. They have been excellent. Their customer service is very good, prompt and we have never had any issues. They are also very responsive if our alarm goes off and I always feel very safe and assurred that they will help. They are also very innovative and always improve their technology so that if you ever want or need to upgrade your system, they have great new products. I highly recommend First Alarm for home security systems.

Be very careful of this company. They make you sign a 3 year contract but tell you if you fall on hard times, you can get out of it. That is absolutely not true. They do not honor that statement. They also don’t return phone calls or emails. It has been a miserable experience to work with them. I will NEVER EVER use this company again and I highly recommend you consider a different company as well.
UPDATE: We were able to get out of the contract one year early by emailing and talking to the CEO. He granted us a pardon. Seems like he is a nice guy and wants everyone to be happy.

I work with a number of companies because we are a real estate development company. We had hired First Alarm to monitor one of our properties. Their billing department continued to bill us for several months for another customer and customer id. More than 3 phone calls, faxed letters and postal letters were issued to straighten this matter.
I did not recieve a single response back and after 6 month received another improper bill where I called and was able to speak to a manager. She stated, the address and name had been corrected.
No stars for their poor service.
