History

Established in 2009.

Ryan established Sunset Animal Care LLC in the Outer Sunset Neighborhood of San Francisco. A year later he and the business moved to Walnut Creek in the East Bay.

Now, back in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Sunset Animal Care LLC is bringing its passion back to Ann Arbor and will continue to provide dogs, cats, (bunnies and lizards) a more personal at home care.

Sunset Animal Care LLC is determined to deliver professional animal care and has the experience to do so. Ryan has worked with hundreds of dog breeds from big to small, puppy to senior and everything in between. While he studied to obtain his BA from San Francisco State University, Ryan managed at Dog Boarding and Day Care Facilities in San Francisco. At the same time, Ryan founded Sunset Animal Care LLC in the Outer Sunset neighborhood in San Francisco where he walked dogs in Golden Gate Park and Ocean Beach.

Now, back in his hometown of Ann Arbor for over 20 years, Ryan and Sunset Animal Care LLC have a very special opportunity for you and your pets. I have been using sunset animal care for my 4 year old dog for the past year and I couldn’t be happier with my service. Ryan goes above and beyond to be flexible and work around my ever changing work schedule. He shows a lot of love for my dog and I feel more than confident leaving her in his care. I highly recommend using his services as he is very reliable and will treat your dog as his own.

I’ve been using Sunset’s services for all my pet care needs for about 2.5 years now, since my dog was a puppy. Ryan has always been super accessible and reliable, coming to my aid quickly even from the very beginning — when I brought my puppy home spontaneously with nobody to watch her when I went to work 2 days later! He’s been watching her ever since, including when I’m on vacation, even on short notice. I will also be the first to admit that my dog wasn’t an easy puppy — she used to chew a LOT and still has food allergies and anxiety. Ryan accommodates all our needs and is always a smiling face. I really don’t know what we’d do without him!

Ryan has been walking our dog, Monte, for over a year and we couldn’t be happier with the service he provides. Upon first meeting Ryan at the complementary consultation he arranged at our home, it was obvious that he is very passionate about what he does. Our walking needs tend to change week-​to-​week and Ryan is always able to accommodate our fluctuating schedule. I love receiving the selfies he sends us of him with our dog while I am at work. Ryan obviously cares very deeply for Monte and we would trust him to take care of our fur baby overnight while taking trips out of town should the need arise.

I have a bullmastiff and a chihuahua and use Ryan on days when I have late meetings scheduled and can’t get home to let them out. Ryan is great about adjusting his schedule to fit my boys in even though my schedule can be sporadic. I appreciated the consultation where he made sure that they were all comfortable with each other, and I also love the pictures via text I get while I am at work that let me know my boys are being taken care of and having fun!

I’m a longtime lurker, first-​time Unilocal!poster. I’ve finally been driven to post because two very different service providers went above and beyond for me in the past year and deserve recognition. Ryan of Sunset Animal Care is one of those providers.
Last summer my dog (Chopper) was battling an illness that we thought was partially brought on by anxiety, so when we had to leave town suddenly for a funeral, we elected to keep him at home rather than board him at an overnight facility. We found Ryan through Unilocal and set up a schedule whereby Ryan would make regular visitations over the weekend while we were away.
Unfortunately, in the first 24 hours we were away, Chopper started showing signs of stress colitis. Ryan called us regularly with updates and showed sincere concern for our dog. Unfortunately, given Chopper’s state, the only answer was to have someone stay overnight with him to let him out frequently. We were clearly in a bind.
Despite our last minute request, Ryan agreed to spend the night at our house to take care of Chopper until we returned. This was above and beyond the normal call of duty, and Ryan did this having only met us and Chopper on the Friday before we left town.
While I think we scared Ryan off for good after that weekend, I will forever be grateful for his flexibility and care for Chopper when we were in desperate need.
P. S. Chopper is now fine and fully recovered!

Met Ryan one day while walking my dog and it was the best thing that could have happened! He walks Charlie my yellow lab twice a week on days when I am particularly busy, and it is the highlight of Charlie’s week. Ryan is patient, on time, attentive, did I mention patient, and wonderfully communicative. You can tell he loves his job, and it makes me feel like a better dog owner knowing Charlie is in such good, kind hands. Highly recommend to any and all!

My husband and I were going away just before Thanksgiving and were looking for options for our cat Onyx. After doing some research on Unilocal,we came across Sunset Animal Care. It had excellent reviews and we decided to try it out. After exchanging several emails with Ryan, he came to our house to meet Onyx and us. He was so sweet and nice and Onyx took to him right away. Ryan took notes of all the things we were telling him and asked a lot of questions (which was great). He took care of Onyx for 5 days and every time we sent him a text message to see how things were going, he quickly answered them. It was nice to know that someone caring was taking care of our cat in our own home and that he was not put on additional stress while we were away. When we got home, Onyx looked great, his litter was clean and Ryan even put all the food cans in the recycling bins outside! I would recommend Ryan in a heartbeat and will definitively use his services again.

We own a very high energy young dog (Oliver) and some days we can use assistance with getting him the additional exercise he needs. Ryan has been an amazing addition to Oliver’s weekly routine!
Ryan takes him on scenic and long hikes. I really appreciate the pictures and text updates that Ryan sends me about their adventures, it makes me feel really at ease that our baby boy is in good hands. Oliver comes home both mentally and physically exercised, it makes such a huge impact on his demeanor.
Another service that Ryan offers is care visits while we are away overnight or for extended time during the day. At first I was worried about leaving our Oliver home alone overnight, but after trying this service out it has been a useful and convenient option for us. When we come home we can tell that Oliver is not anxious or stressed. Having someone we can count on to take care of our baby boy has definitely added more flexibility to the social lives of two working parents!

I love Unilocal for a lot of reasons. One of the main ones is that you can find people like Ryan, who are great, small business people who might not come to your attention otherwise.
Ryan was absolutely wonderful with our one-​year-​old Dutch Shepherd. From their first meeting Ryan made our pup feel welcome, cared for, and safe. This was especially important to me, as I was transitioning between taking care of our dog full-​time to working outside our home. It was anxiety-​inducing for me and our dog, to say the least. Well, at least it was for me because I didn’t have someone like Ryan to ease my transition…
Thanks to Ryan, we came home each night to a happy, well-​exercised, healthy dog. He loved Ryan’s sweet dog, Quigley, and even perked up his ears when I asked him if he saw his buddies that day. They had some great adventures on the Iron Horse Trail together.

We hired Ryan to take care of our 3 dogs for 8 days last month. This was our first experience with in home pet sitting. In the past, we always either had family watch our dogs or did camp boarding. Since this was our first time for in home pet sitting, we were a little nervous about having a stranger in our home and also our dogs being alone for so many hours in the day. Ryan was kind enough to come over before our trip to help us ease those fears. The visit went well and our dogs got acquainted with him and we felt comfortable with him in our home.
During our vacation, Ryan also kept me updated via email/​text so I knew our dogs were being well taken care of. Knowing they were being so well cared for kept us relax and we were able to enjoy our vacation that much more.
The best part was when we came home from vacation, our dogs didn’t even bark. Normally, whenever we come home they bark when they hear the front door open. However, the night we got back from vacation, we walked in and they were so relaxed and calm. I could tell they had a great time with Ryan.
In addition, Ryan’s rates are very reasonable and he is easy to communicate with (email, phone & text). We’ll definitely be using Ryan again in the future!

I’m long overdue in writing this review, but I would recommend Ryan as an experienced, reliable, and communicative pet care professional. I have a skittish older husky mix who can have separation anxiety, and I am entirely comfortable with Ryan petsitting her. As an Oaklander, I hired Ryan and paid his bridge tolls etc. even when he lived far out on the ocean side of San Francisco, and am glad he now resides closer in the East Bay.

Ryan is a wonderful dog walker and care taker. He takes my extremely energetic terrier to the beach and the park often. Ryan goes out of his way to make sure that my dog stays out of trouble, which is a big responsibility because my dog is a terrier that does not get along with some dogs that he meets. He is reliable, trustworthy, great with dogs, and I highly recommend him.

Ryan has been an absolute Godsend. I have a now 7 month old puppy named Kenobi & 4 weeks ago I dislocated my knee & shattered my patella. I had to have surgery last week & Ryan has taken my puppy out every day for the last month. I was able to be a little more involved initially because I was couch bound, not bed bound & unconscious, but I would trust Ryan with absolutely any care of any animal that I loved, myself present or not.
Ryan has gone out of his way to learn SmartyPup methods (Kenobi’s puppy school) so that there’s consistency with his training & has even offered to come to puppy school with the group while I’m on crutches.
Ryan has gone out of his way to help me & has been the best thing for my puppy. I’m lucky to have found him & special thanks to Lauren who often helps too. You guy’s have been wonderful!
